Today while looking for something else, I ran across the Jennifer Warnes album I mentioned earlier. It is Shot Through The Heart, Arista 4217, released in 1979, with vocal on Hard Times by Jennifer Warnes, Kenny Edwards, Mike Finnigan, and Brian Russell. It is a nice album, worth picking up if you find it in the used record bins.

Quartette did record Hard Times, and here is info on the CD which contains it with wav/RA sound files of the song.

Thomas Hampson's version (on which Garrison Keillor sings bass!) on his album American Dreamer: Music of Stephen Foster has to be my favourite.

Bob Dylan's version of the song, on Good as I Been To You, is quite good, in an intense, mournful and rather Dylanish sort of way.

I was just listening to another version, by a bunch of local (Salt Lake City) musicians with four part harmony (all males), autoharp, guitar, fiddle, and accordian. It's pretty good. Send me a personal message if interested.

Salvation Army--so that's what they were trying to put across. I always wondered at the strange instrumentation of their version. But I agree, the Red Clay Ramblers' vocal harmonies are top notch. I also like their slow-down tempo. De Danaan always seems to rush through it.

A very nice version is on the Red Clay Ramblers album "Hard Times" at least four-part vocals and a Salvation Army band. It's a wonderful album; haven't seen it out on CD yet.

Thank you all! I saw PBS's "Gaelforce" but couldn't remember the name of the program ... and, yes ... it was an absolutely fabulous version ... I'll try to find on their website ... I also knew of the "Songs of the Civil War" cd, but didn't know who performed it ... I will take the short jaunt to the Stephen Foster Museum in the very near future.

You aren't all that far from the Stephen Foster museum on the Suwanee River in southern Georgia, practically on the border. They have recordings for sale there.

If the PBS show, Gaelforce, is shown in your area, do not miss it! Among a host of many great things is a terrific rendition of Hard Times by Maura O'Connell, Mary Black, Elanor Shanley, and Tommy Fleming backed by DeDanann. It does not get any better than that. Cassettes, CDs, and VHS tapes are all available from the Gaelforce website.

There is also a nice version by Hugh Moffatt (with Wade McCurdy and Stuart Duncan)on Philo/Rounder 1127. Another version at least as good is by Jennifer Warnes, but my guess is that you would have a hard time locating that one. Both are a capella, trio or quartet. Songs of the Civil War, Columbia 48607, has a version by Kate and Anna McGarrigle and their families. While I like their version, it does not stand up against the other three I mentioned. Of course, that reflects my tastes. Yours might be different.
