At least I suspect that's the title, I think it's the start of the chorus anyway. It's one of those late-night singaround slow chorussy type songs that I heard over the summer, and hadn't heard before, at least not that I remembered, so I wondered about it.

Remember any phrases from it, Anglo? With just the title, it's hard to find a song. Could it be Bide A Wee?

Thanks Joe, but I don't think that's it. (Though it might be! For some reason I can't access the second page of the music with the chorus, but from the first page I don't think so). I heard it once, last June, and have more of a memory of the situation than of the song itself. I thought perhaps it might be well-known in singers' circles that I don't go to, so I thought I'd toss it up and see if I got any response.

The words were posted on thread some time back, I think by "Raggytash" the thread was about Tom Yates, the songs writer. Sorry about the mess, I just did a cut and paste from a Word file I made of it. Maybe the correction Fairy can correct it. I remember the chorus but not the tune to the words, ah well it was about 30 years ago I heard it .

The days full end has rounded out and ends the working light
and I would have all round about
the friendship of this night.........

to bide a while bide a while
sit you down by me bide a while a while
bide a while in friendly company

Abide with us an hour to pass before you think to part
allow the landlord fill your glass and friendship fill your heart.....and

Use up the time you have to spend with kinsmen you well know
so pull aside a chair and lend the time before you go ........to

Come one come all the parting toast is raised in fond refrain
no matter who should play the host
we'll bide a while again............so

JohnB

I've heard Cliff Haslam sing this at folk gatherings with words as posted by JohnB - a truly wonderful, mellow chorus to sing along with!

Try getting in touch with Bram Taylor he sings it and has a CD by that name, or, as some-one once called it his Bidet a Willie album.

"'Til We Meet Again"? WWI

Bide a while I bid you sad adieu
When the clouds roll by I'll come for you
DADADADADADA
Down in lover's lane my dearie.
Wedding bells will ring so merrily.
Every tear will be a memory.
So wait and pray each night for me
"Til we meet again.

Thanks John B, that was the song I was looking for. Many thanks. I managed to find the Tom Yates thread here (now if I could remember how to do a blue clicky)

http://www.mudcat.org/thread.CFM?threadID=36669

I was around Manchester in the early/middle 60's but don't remember coming across him.

I put some breaks in John B's posting. I remember the chorus, probably from Cliff Haslam.

I, too, have heard Cliff Haslam sing it many times. Jay Smith now also sings it -- he learned it from Cliff.

This song has popped up recently in a couple of threads.
Does anyone have the tune to the verse, in any format, I can only remember the chorus tune.
Thanks for sorting those words out long ago and far away Susan of DT.
JohnB.

hello, all, thank you so much for putting down these lyrics. T.Yates lived in Belgium and was a very close friend.unfortunately, I did lose the early tapes he gave me, but found the songs on soulseek;
has any one got the recording of the album "song of the shimmering way"?
