Subject: Notation Req: Knickers of Corduroy From: Alice Date: 28 Nov 01 - 11:58 PM I have a friend who is looking for notation of this song. I searched abc tune sites on the web (Richard Robinson's and JC's tune finder) with not luck. I also searched old sheet music sites to no avail. Does anyone have notation for Knickers of Corduroy? Thanks. Alice |

Did you perhaps find a midi? Almost any of the notation programs can open a midi file and turn it into notation. Perhaps if you could point someone at a midi a way could be found to "translate" it for you. The only real difficulty with the method is that complex midis (the ones that sound really great) may have so much stuff in them that finding the parts you want can be difficult. John |

Subject: RE: Notation Req: Knickers of Corduroy From: JohnInKansas Date: 29 Nov 01 - 06:34 AM After looking around, I was beginning to think Alice made up this title. I did find another thread, though at Lyr Req: Knickers of Corduroy so apparently it's real. Lyrics are given in this thread. I note an archaic spelling "corderoy," (Random House unabridged) and found a couple of albums that spelled it "cordouroy" - reason unknown, but have not come up with anything useful searching variants. It is listed in a "playlist" as performed by a group called "Four Shillings Short." One other site implies that Maighread ni Dhomhnaill either created or performed it - that site's pretty messed up. Subject: RE: Notation Req: Knickers of Corduroy From: Jeri Date: 29 Nov 01 - 10:19 AM See 'Hot Ashpelt' - similar, not exactly the same. I believe the tune for 'Hot Ashpelt' came from the fiddle tune 'Bonaparte Crossing the Rocky Mountains'. Funny thing I noticed: in the thread John in Kansas linked to, the person requesting the lyrics is one Henrik Norbeck. Henrik is in Blackthorne, and it's his page Sorcha linked to for the MP3. It wouldn't take much to do a MIDI of the tune, which I'll put the MIDIText into the other thread, as the lyrics don't seem to have been "birdied" yet. Alice, if you can't turn that into dots, I can either e-mail you an image file (Click to e-mail me), or I can stick the file on my personal page so you and/or your friend can view and swipe it from there. |

Subject: RE: Notation Req: Knickers of Corduroy From: GUEST,Alice Date: 29 Nov 01 - 10:56 AM Thanks, Jeri. I did not get any files returned with abc searches, (I do know midis can be converted to gifs). It is the recording by Maighread where my friend's daughter heard the song, and she wants to take sheet music to her voice teacher. I did also search any recordings of it for sale on the 'net to get sound samples. I searched the Mudcat/DT first to see if it was here, and found only the lyrics thread. They asked me if I could find the notation for them. I'll write to you later, Jeri, when I'm back at my own computer. Alice |

Subject: RE: Notation Req: Knickers of Corduroy From: Jeri Date: 29 Nov 01 - 12:11 PM Transcribed from the MP3 Sorcha linked to of Maighread Ni Dhomhnaill. Please note that there are variations in each verse, and the tune below is what I feel are the "bones." Alice, watch this space. It's not hard to do an image, and I'll post a link in a few minutes. Transmitting attachments these days is a bit risky. I know I don't have anything, but I can't fault anyone on the receiving end for being careful.
MIDI file: KNICKRS.MID Timebase: 480 Name: Knickers of Corduroy This program is worth the effort of learning it. To download the latest version of MIDItext and get instructions on how to use it click here ABC format: X:1

Subject: RE: Notation Req: Knickers of Corduroy From: Jeri Date: 29 Nov 01 - 01:48 PM I put the dots up here. It's very short, and doesn't last a full verse, but it repeats. Note to MMario: Don't collect that MIDI yet - I need to tweak it. Found boo-boos. |

Subject: RE: Notation Req: Knickers of Corduroy From: Jeri Date: 29 Nov 01 - 02:08 PM OK - fixed now. Well, it's fixed to the utmost ability of my brain and ears. I wonder if I should have repeated the music to get through a verse? (The first half is identical to second.) |
