I guess it's the civil engineer in me that reminds me of this. When the Beatles performed on Ed Sullivan and the show went to commercial after that performance, many American city sewer systems backed up. That's an impact in itself. Again, rest well George.

I was born in 1967 and only really discovered the Beatles after John's death. I was 13 at the time.

I did hear that many fans gthering in NYC and elsewhere to mourn and celebrate his life, hadn't even been born when the Beatles came into the world, heck my son was born the year they broke up.

Has John really been gone 21 years?:-(

To add to C.P.'s remarks, one of the best things about being in that privileged generation was that we had an example -- in the Beatles -- of people being creative and changing and transforming themselves in extraordinary ways in public, and pushing their creative transformation through the wider society. We had that ongoing story, and I think it has affected most of that group since -- positively as role models, but also that constant dissatisfaction with what happened after, and the disappointment that everything didn't go on and keep transforming and changing at the same peak level (as if it could). I don't believe that any of us living through the sixties as teenagers thought, oh, this is great, people will be listening to this in 40 years; what we thought was, wow, this is a great start, what is going to happen next? How will we be changed? If anyone had told me that radio stations would be playing 60's records nonstop in 2001, and people would be looking back on the 60's as some great peak, I would have been disgusted and horrified.

I don't believe that this perspective is a normal aspect of any generation growing old: I have never sensed this in the ways of the older generations I had the privilege of growing up with: they had other stories and ways of being, other optimisms and pessimisms, other nostalgias, better in some ways, different certainly.

One effect that I have always pondered (and admired) is this. They were accepted by the establishment. The only thing "radical" upon their arrival was the hair. The tunes were good and non-offensive to most. After they were established, things began to change. Not just the music. Here was John and Yoko getting live press coverage from a bed !!! Someone with widespread popularity and political respect from nowhere said something so radical as, "Give peace a chance." And more than a generation listened and agreed. Of course, humans are a bit more complicated than that but it still did make a mark.

Yes, the Beatles had a legacy of tremendous press from the beginning when they were harmless mop-tops. Later, they made clever use of it to publicize their views on taboo subjects like drugs, pacifism, feminism and sexual freedom. The press still lapped it up. That was one of the things you had to love about the sixties: if one of the Beatles had said Nixon was a paranoid pedo-phile, it would have been front page news in most papers, and it would have been gospel truth in Rolling Stone and The Village Voice.

I always felt that he was the most musically gifted and the most backward in coming forward and the world is now two Beatles less and Two Travelling Wilburys less. For one brief shining moment I thought I might actually get to MEET him. He collected National steel Ukeleles. I had one. Sent the details to "his people". Pictured him inviting me to his Chateau, taking the uke, handing me two grand, and then saying "You moost join us for dinner, and afterwards Eric and Bobby are coomin' over for a session, if you'd like to do soom pickin'".

A year later I got a note from "his people", saying "sorry, he's not interested".

Oh well......

Although I'm a blues and bluegrass type, I listen with great interest to George. One of the best at fills and backing riffs. Eight note solos in the turnarounds, way better than so much of the wretched excess that passes for guitar playing. Sad to hear of his passing. I'd be honored to throw a branch on his funeral pyre.

I was about 9, and the headlines said the Beatles were coming to the nearby Red Rocks outdoor amphitheater. Of course my parents said we could absolutely NOT go. Nonetheless, I sat on the living room floor in front of the hi-fi listening to my big brothers' Beatles records. I loved the early songs, especially the acoustic ones. The simple, lovely melodies and earnest love songs of youth. When they went to India, and a couple of the lads noticed a then popular blonde girl singer frequenting the bedchamber of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the lads started leaving India. While they found out that the big guru had feet of clay, George realised Truth in the teachings of the guru, and sought out & found those who could teach him Kriya Yoga. On Thursday evening of this week, I went online, and did a search for news of George. For some reason, I expected something new to be reported, but surprisingly found nothing. Fri AM I found out that George had made his final Samhadi. We can learn from George, even now. We can choose to not allow tobacco manufacturers to take our money & kill us. We can pick up our guitars and share songs of love & peace. We can choose to respect the religious/philosophical beliefs of others and NOT condemn our fellow humans- brothers & sisters- who may not be fundamentalist Christians. We can remember to live each day with the knowledge that there are many others across the globe who also believe in love & peace, and treat all whom we meet as our beloved brothers & sisters. If only a handful of us would do some of these things every day, just imagine . . .ah, but that's another Beatle.

A very sad day for his family, fans and music. I live in Henley, where George lived and in the 70's I had an attic flat on a road bordering his mansion. Quite often we would hear him playing guitar at 1 or 2 am in the morning, the sound coming over the tree tops - how's that for a lullaby?

So I took out the sitar, I really should play it more often. I played nothing on it but "Harrisongs" for three hours or so. It's funny how adaptable that instrument can be. Then I played his records into the evening. One cannot help but touch upon his wisdom and feel peace. Today I'll play some more of those songs on the guitar.

Anyone seen Concert for George which was done 1 year after his death. It features Clapton, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, McCartney, Gary Booker, Albert Lee and a bunch of others including lots of his backup players like Jim Keltner, Klaus Voorman et al who deliver his songs faithfully and lovingly. The real stars though are the songs. When you line them up it's amazing how many great ones he wrote. It orginally aired on PBS in the US and is now on DVD.vl

Could've done without Ringo singing one of his hits but glad they incluced the Carl Perkins tune for the rockabilly guitar. I'm not a big McCartney fan but thought he did fine on All Things Must Pass and Something. Best part for me though was the segment with Joe Brown. I haven't heard Here Comes the Sun done that well since George with the Beatles.vl

I loved the guy (which one was that?) who played uke and sang "I'll See You In My Dreams" to end the show.

And George's son Dhani ("Uncle Ringo" pronounces it just like "Danny" so I'll assume that's correct) is the spit and image of his dad!   

I have this on videotape but I'd love to have the DVD.

I got the DVD of the show for Xmas and would highly recommend it. The Shankar piece is long but fascinating if you're into it.
