Never on Sunday Connie Francis Oh, you can kiss me on a Monday a Monday a Monday is very very good Or you can kiss me on a Tuesday a Tuesday a Tuesday in fact I wish you would Or you can kiss me on a Wednesday a Thursday a Friday and Saturday is best But never ever on a Sunday a Sunday a Sunday cause that's my day of rest Most anyday you can be my guest Anyday you say but my day of rest Just name the day that you like the best Only stay away on my day of rest Oh, you can kiss me on a cool day a hot day a wet day which ever one you choose Or try to kiss me on a grey day a May day a pay day and see if I refuse And if you make it on a bleak day a freak day or a week day Well you can be my guest But never ever on a Sunday a Sunday the one day I need a little rest Oh, you can kiss me on a week day a week day a week day the day to be my guest best wishes, Yvonne |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: never on a sunday (answered) From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 30 Nov 01 - 11:25 AM This song by Manos Hadjidakis has been butchered by many American singers. Listen to Nana Mouskouri sing it in Greek on Fontana LP 885.514 MY. Ta Pedia Ton Pirea. Don't know if it has been reissued on cd. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: never on a sunday (answered) From: masato sakurai Date: 30 Nov 01 - 11:51 AM Since I saw the movie Never On Sunday many years ago, my memory is faltering, but I think Melina Merkuri (who became a Cabinet member of the Greek government later) danced, singing it. One of the recordings (not a soundtrack version, but by a German(?) orchestra) is HERE. ~Masato |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: never on a sunday (answered) From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 30 Nov 01 - 01:14 PM The first version, non-vocal (11:51 AM) is possibly an instrumental by the Athenians, who backed Mercouri on several tours and recordings (for a while, she was married to their leader). The second is a reliable Greek version, at least on the short clip. The original lyrics are titled People of Pireus (Ta Pedia Ton Pirea). I should have mentioned that the LP mentioned above was a French release but was distributed in N. Am. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: never on a sunday (answered) From: GUEST,Jerry Date: 23 Mar 21 - 07:24 AM I have a sheet music version of this in an old songbook, United Artists copyright 1960, with music by Manos Hadjidakis and lyrics by Billy Towne. The lyrics quoted above in this thread are identical to that, but the piano arrangement of the music (in Eb) is a typically rather bland (westernised) version of the bouzouki playing, apart from the opening (and in between verse) motif, which sounds about right to me. Someone else could probably name the Greek scale used, but it differs from the Ionian with sharp second and fourth notes. The lyrics are as corny to my mind as some find the tune to be, which was why I once produced a parody for a work shy friend: I like to rise and shine each morning, each morning, each morning, I’m up and dressed the first. I love to see each new day dawning, day dawning, day dawning, With joy I’m fit to burst. But never ever on a Monday, a Monday, a Monday, I’d rather breathe my last. Oh, why can’t it still be Sunday, be Sunday, be Sunday? Sundays go by so fast. But then I reckon, when the weekend beckons, I dance every second, a joy to be alive. A born weekender, I go on a bender, a compulsive spender, and not just Nine to Five. And likewise never on a Tuesday, a Tuesday, a Tuesday, Any day that ends in Y.
