Just a question here: Is Jordan spelled Jerdan in this particular song? It's pronounced that way in the South, but I've never seen it spelled that way.

Right, Mary, always spelled Jordan, but I put it this way to show how it should be sung.
My wife's family has a story that the pronunciation came from the Jourdain (or Jourdan) family, owners of plantations and several businesses in the South during the 19th Century. Apparently they pronounced their name Jerdan rather than the French way. I'm not sure anyone knows for certain what the origin is.

That's a good story. I lived in Auburn, Alabama where the football stadium was named after a beloved coach, Shug Jordan (Jerdan).

I have seen it written in many places as Jerdon, Jerdan, etc.
