Here's a midi/abc I made last year from a version collected in the late 50's in Suffolk. The tune is not vastly different from Nutty's, but like much of the material sung by Emily Sparkes, the words are only fragments of a much larger song. Thanks for posting the rest of the words.

O the fox and the hare
The badger and the bear
The birds in the greenwood tree
The pretty little rabbits
Are engag-ed in their habits
And they've all got a mate but me.

She was sixteen stone,
All muscle and bone,
And I might have been a millionaire
She might have been mine,

By swallowing a mouse in the beer.

Michael, the following is what Jimmy Crowley sings, according to the CD booklet. As it differs from the Essex version posted above in quite a few places I think it's ok to post it. (And you're right about the accent. I doubt I'd have worked it out by ear alone!)

The abc is machine generated, and can't handle pickup notes correctly. You usually have to re-bar it and also clean up the non-printable note lengths like the F7/2 at the end (which I think would be F4z2 or F6). Also you have to put in L:1/8 for it to print C2 as a quarter-note rather than a half-note.

There is a slightly different version published in "Green Groves" songs collected by Fred Hamer - a sequal to "Garners Gay" which was published by the E.F.D.S.S in 1970

I would appreciate help with the lyrics to "The Fox and the Hare" as recorded by Jimmy Crowley, the great Cork balladeer. That Cork nasal mushmouthedness is so thick that I can't make out the last verse! Thanks for any responses.
