Are you thinking of a sackbut? A sort of Renaissance forerunner to the trombone, but I guess someone'll pop up with a better description.

Some 'early mousic' consorts still play 'em.

I THINK its some kind of Trombone actually, & think that it spelt SACKBUT (which sure does make it sound like some kind of bagpipe!) Maybe thats why nothing has come up on a Search, which youve tried I dont doubt.

On the York Waits CD I have, it's spelled saggbut.

if you look at the link I put in above - you'll see that (as with many other early english words) there were a lot of variant spellings

The OED gives 13 spellings, not counting Spanish and other languages. The entry is under sackbut.
Sagbutt is one of them.

I particularly like Shagbutt, but it's lees fun with a sagbutt.....and I'm surprised no one has mentioned Kim's Fiddle Butt.........Kim, as you get older, do you fear that your fiddle butt will join with a sag butt and produce a cello? No, Spaw, since I discovered Tae Bo, the size of my Fiddlebum has decreased somewhat, and its shape has improved as well. ;-)

What would really be nice on these recordings where people use rather obscure instruments, is a description of what the instruments are. The York Waits use a whole passel of very old instruments, and Mister and I had to look them up in the dictionary! I'll bet if we look for "sackbut" it'll be in there.

Well, waddya know, "sackbut" was indeed in my dictionary, and is defined as an early trombone. However, it also says that in Biblical times, a sackbut was some sort of stringed instrument.

Sometimes spelled "saquebut". It's from a French word meaning pump.

It's the forerunner of the trombone. It is used in early music consorts and comes in different voices, alto, soprano as well as tenor and bass. It was mostly used with choirs in liturgical music.
