From: GUEST,Steve

I know this is a very old thread, but I happened to be translating this myself today, and thought I would share. Not sure how good it is, but it was my attempt at least.

Yule, Yule, Glorious Yule. Shine over snow-filled forests.
Glimmering lanterns of heavenly white,
Glistening archways in mighty Gods light.
Songs we have sungeth from age to age.
Peace be on earth from malice and rage.
Yule, Yule. Glorious Yule. Shine over snow-filled forests.

Come. Come, holiest Yule. Lay down your blessed wings
over the blood of soldiers in war,
over the tortured, the weak and the poor,
over our elders who go now to rest,
over the young we hold tight to our chest.
Come, Come, holiest Yule. Lay down your blessed wings.

Google Translation of Verse 1:

Christmas, Christmas, glorious Christmas, glory over white forests,
Christmas, Chistmas, Brilliant chrismas, Shine over white Forests
Heaven crowns with sparkling light,
the Crown of the heavens with brilliant lights
Gleaming arcs in all God's house,
Glowing archers in all god's houses
Hymn, which is sung from time to time,
Anthem, That is sung from time to time (from age to age)
Eternal longing for light and peace!
Eternal longing for light and peace
Christmas, Christmas, glorious Christmas, splendor over white woods!

Google translation of Verse 2:
Come, come, designed Christmas! Lower your white wings
Over the  blood and alarm of battles,
Over all sighing (groaning) from the human breast,
Over the generations that go to their rest,
Over the young [dagande], stay!•
Come, come, heraldling Christmas! Lower your white wings.

•I'll go with thomas's translation, above, for now.

LOL
Well, the online "translators" have been known to be a bit lacking where idioms are concerned. We have whole threads about "Mangled translations" because of that.

It could be there are typos in the Swedish text above, but it could also be a case of idioms not translating well and/or a case of the "translators" not having full access to the various meanings of some particular words in Swedish or English.

Can someone please clarify this for me?

Regarding the line, "Över all suckan ur människobarm,"

I used an online translator, and it gave me this:

"over all sucking at the human breast"

This is a little crude and disturbing, haha! Also, it is completely different from what someone posted above, about sighs from the human heart.

So, should the line be translated as something like, "over all suckling babies"??? Which is correct?

Tweaking the English translation

"från tid till tid" in this song has to mean "from age to age"

"from age to age" = "from one generation to the next" or "throughout the ages" or "throughout history" and implies the older passing on a tradition to the younger ones

"from time to time" = "once in a while" or "occasionally" or "sometimes"
That doesn't fit in this case.

Hi! For you who asked what "tid till tid" means:
I am swedish myself, so I can tell you :)
"tid" means "time" - and so, "tid till tid" means "time to time" , but here it can as well mean "age to age"
I hope it helped you :)

Many clips of this on YouTube, for instance:

Sanna, Shirley & Sonja (women's trio): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHFUruWXvwA
(solo for most of the first verse, then trio; nice instrumental backing)
Hundeidvik Blandakor (choir): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4HaiLGmK5U
Jonathan Fagerlund (boy alto): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU-scR5k0AQ
(cheap synth accompaniment, but nice, clear singing)

Jul, Jul, strålande jul, glans över vita skogar,
christmas, Chistmas, Brilliant chrismas, Shine over white Forests
Himmelens kronor med gnistrande ljus,
the Crown of the heavens with brilliant lights
Glimande bågar i alla Guds hus,
Glowing archers in all god´s houses
Psalm, som är sjungen från tid till tid,
Hymn, that are sung from time to time (from age to age)
Eviga längtan till ljus och frid!
Eternal longing to light and peace
Jul, Jul, strålande jul, glans över vita skogar!

Kom, kom, signade jul! Sänk dina vita vingar
Come, Come blessed Christmas, Lower thy white wings
Över stridernas blod och larm,
Over the battles blood and trumoil
Över all suckan ur människobarm,
Over all sighs from human hearts
Över de släkten som gå till ro,
Over the generations that will go to rest
Över de ungas dagande bo!
Over the young ones comming of age (this is a tricky one )
Kom, kom, signa de jul! Sänk dina vita vingar.

I've heard the English song before. Good to have the lyrics. Never heard the Swedish, though.

Oops, typo! It says "tid till tid." I don't know exactly what "tid" means ("tide?" "day?"). Still looking for a translation.

Here is a pretty Christmas song I did not see mentioned in any of the Christmas song threads or in the DT.
The English lyric is not a translation of the Swedish, but both are beautiful songs.

Cany anyone translate the Swedish for me?  I know it talks about "God's house" and "white wings" and singing songs from "tide to tide" and, I think, about snow and something about Heaven,  and about Christmas, of course, but that's about as far as I got!

Jul, Jul
W:Edv. Evers; M: Gustaf Nordqvist 1886-1946

Jul, Jul, strålande jul,  glans över vita skogar,
Himmelens kronor med gnistrande ljus,
Glimande bågar i alla Guds hus,
Psalm, som är sjungen från tid till tid,
Eviga längtan till ljus och frid!
Jul, Jul, strålande jul, glans över vita skogar!

Kom, kom, signade jul!  Sänk dina vita vingar
Över stridernas blod och larm,
Över all suckan ur människobarm,
Över de släkten som gå till ro,
Över de ungas dagande bo!
Kom, kom, signa de jul!  Sänk dina vita vingar.

Wonderful Peace  English  Text: Norman Luboff

Peace, peace, wonderful peace,
Peace to the world is given.
Hushed are the angels, so still is the night.
Then in the East shone a heavenly light.
Join in the chorus, His praises sing!
Glory to God, to the newly born King!
Peace, peace, wonderful peace,
Peace to the world is given!

Peace, peace, bearer of peace,
All of good will receive him.
Holiest of nights, O most wond'rous of days;
Shepherds and kings lift their voices in praise.
Join in the chorus, His praises sing!
Glory to God to the newly born King!
Peace, peace, wonderful peace,
Peace to the world is given!
