Subject: I've put paid to my random pop-ups!
From: Dave the Gnome
Date: 06 Dec 01 - 04:54 PM

I posted an enquiry on the help forum about getting pop ups while using the mudcat. The powers that be assured me that it was not the 'cat and they were, of course, quite right. I noticed that a few other people were plagued with similar so I thought I would share my solution.

I now regularly run a program called 'ad-aware' which deletes all the spy and snoop ware cookies and other sundry nasties that the more unscrupulous web hosters leave you with.

The first time I ran it I was amazed - there were somewhere in the region of 500 bits of data that were deleted. I have not had a problem since and I now run it after every internet session.

You would be surprised how often these potential nasties pop-up!

Cheers

Dave the Gnome

I have a popupkiller, which seems to work nicely, but has a nasty habit of making a noise like a machine gun or a slapped tin bucket. It also only works on certain engines, if I'm in my local server, it just lets the buggers through....

There is also software somewhere to stop general live pop-ups. I'll check.

I got rid of popup killer, the one with the noise (there's somewhere in the program where you can turn that off) because it wouldn't let me open a second browser window at all.

Liz, if you right click on the tray icon for PopupKiller, then click on 'Preferences,' you'll get a three-tabbed box for setting certain parameters. If you click on the 'Look and Feel' tab, there's a box you can uncheck to disable the sounds.

And, kat, if you do the same thing and click on the 'Detection' tab, you'll see a box in which to set the number of windows that can be open at one time. I set mine to 10 and have had no problems.

Ad-Aware is a Good Thing but it will disable PalTalk ad Gator if you're not selective. I like PalTalk & Gator enough to suffer a certain amount of pop-up. But for other stuff it worked great.

Thanks, Ivan, but I think I uninstalled it. I'll check.

Bert, we had/have at&t and I had no problem getting on with Popup Killer. You do know about Excite@home shutting down and AT&T going off line because of it, until they got back up, right? We just got our service back today.

Oh WOW!!!

500 bits of data!

THAT'S GREAT!

*heavy sarcasm*

The best and easiest way to get rid of popups is to simply click the little X in the grey box at the to right corner of the pop-up...

poof!

GOLLY GEE!! NO SHIT, CLINTON!!?????

*Even heavier sarcasm*

And what do YOU do when the damned pop-ups come at you faster than you can click them off???? When your whole damned screen AND system tray are covered with the effin' things?????

Personally, I shut down the entire Web connection when that happens--such as about 5 minutes ago--and go delete all the friggin' cookies and temp files the damned pop-ups scatter all over my system.

I'm very glad to see there's an easier and more productive way to slap down these nasty things.

Lin, who is bloody sick and tired of goddamned pop-ups and reading the same bullshit, irrelevant comment from Clinton that he used the last three times the subject came up

I have only just gotten round to checking my post of a few days ago - thanks to all who provided clickies etc. and special thanks to Clinton for pointing out that there is always a harder way to do things and for enlightening us as to what sarcasm is.

I would never have known otherwise.

Lin:

Here's something I invented myself (maybe 1,000,000 others did, too, of course) Use Netscape. It only has a single cookie file, cookie.txt, instead of thousands of individual ones as IE does. Find cookie.txt and right-click for properties and click read only. The verdamte programs think they're giving you a cookie but it doesn't get added. (This is much better than turning cookies off - the programs know that and keep insisting you accept.) If you're ever at a site at which you want to accept, just make a safety copy of cookie.txt (yes, do it) and unclick read-only while you're there. Works fine for me.

"And what do YOU do when the damned pop-ups come at you faster than you can click them off????"

I've been hit by popup bombs, but I just close 'em... show the desk top and in a real emergency Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the "close program" dialogue... select my browser, and end task... easy peasy...

I'd also forgotten that I've used Abby Sale method as well, for about 4 years now... maybe that why pop-up bombs don't go off at me? The only ones that really get me these days are Java app pop-ups and for the last 6 months or so, I've been ghosting with Java disabled anyway...

Abby Sale--Thank you for the information about Netscape. I will check into it.

Clinton--"Giving as good as you get"? Not even close, dear.

The comments you have made in this thread are condescending, smart-ass, and not at all useful. I'm sure you had someone in mind when you stated "Like the comments from dullards who haven't got a clue what their computers do, or how they do it," but I'm certain it was not aimed at me, because you have no way on earth of knowing what my level of expertise might be.

You put forth your "easy peasey" so-called solutions as if no one else has ever done exactly what you are proposing. As a matter of fact, if you had bothered to actually read my entire comment above, I SAID I shut down the connection and deleted the garbage, and no, it wasn't hard, just a general pain in the ass. I would much prefer to find something that will stop the problem at the source instead of just reacting to it. I was hoping to find out if anyone else has come up with something other than the VERY FIRST SOLUTION I ever learned with my VERY FIRST computer, many years ago--to wit: REBOOT. Big deal.

Now YOU back off!

Lin

I downloaded AdAware and it seems to work pretty good... there's still a few that come up, but not many.

I used to just close them, or try to, anyway... too may windows open and my computer would slow WAY down and it took forever for the unwanted windows to close by regular means: ctrl-alt-del, alt-F4, or clicking on the X.

I think everyone's machine may have different ways of dealing with the nuisance - what works well for one may not work for another.

I use(d) PopUpKiller, and was fairly satisfied. Some popups got through.

I read the comments about Ad-A-Ware, and downloaded it. Did nothing further. Now PopUpKiller complains about a lot of non-ad popups, and some actual popup ads, giving a window something like "PopUpKiller finds that "" is probably a popup. what do you want to do?" and it gives four buttons--ignore, close, blacklist, and something else. NONE OF WHICH WORKS!

In order to access PalTalk I have to exit PopUpKiller and put up with the popups.

Since this problem was immediate after downloading Ad-Aware, I assume it is to blame. I would delete it, but know neither the file name nor the directory in which it resides.

Anybody got any advice?

Dave Oesterreich

Dave, In Ad-Aware you have the option to have it ignore certain programs as a default. I don't believe it is an active program like PUK. When run it searches your computer for ad-keying files and programs and offers you the choice to delete them or watever. It tells you what program they're for. So...tell it to Ignore all PalTalk files. I also have it ignore Gator password/ID filler-inner. I like Gator.

Ad-Aware is called Ad-Aware. Just search for it using Start | Find | Files.

However, I strongly recommend you use Add/Remove to remove any Windows program. They all change things and drop files here and there on your computer that simply deleting the directory will not remove. Add/Remove is in Start | Settings | Control Plane.

If you don't have a Windows computer, however, you're screwed - nothing you can do about it - should have got a PC, you know. Live with it.

:-)

That's right, Abby. Ad-Aware gives one the ability to decide that certain “spyware” programs are okay and have the program leave them alone.

If you pay the $15 one-time license fee for Ad-Aware Pro, it also comes with Ad-Watch, a background process that monitors activity and shoots down any spyware before it can even be installed. I haven't poped for the license yet but I'm considering it.

I also use a personal firewall and a commercial anti-virus program. You'd be surprised how often people hit your computer just to see if you've left any openings.

There seems to be two products from LavaSoftUSA - Ad-Aware, which I use, is not a background process but run as and when you decide to clear out all the spyware that you have picked up on-route. Ad-Watch, which I have not tried, seems to be a memory resident product that monitors and blocks spyware immediately.

I am happy with the Ad-Aware product. It runs automaticaly when I boot up and does the job for me. It does not conflict with anything else I run. I am sure that there are other good products on the market, and for some manual routines, which work equally well.

Hope this helps and gives no offense to anyone who seriously believes that their way is best;-)

Cheers

Considering what pop-ups can leave behind, I've been considering a program like Norton's "Clean Sweep" or something similar. Anyone had experience with one of these?

Spaw - Clean Sweep is magnificent. This little guy will remove all of the cookies, temp files, and anything else if you ask it to when you ask it to. I automatically have it do it's job upon opening the puter and when I exit I think? I'm not home so am going off a suspect memory. It works under the guise of keeping your space available for use and not the chronic piling up of cookies and temp files from the net. You'll like it.

Guest - Ad-Aware is a Good Thing but it will disable PalTalk - - Is there a setting in it that will allow Paltalk?

Dave - I thought you paid the $15 for Paltalk to be bannerless? I finally did and have not had a popup for what seems like eons.

The occasional site I visit that gives me popups I don't often go back to - seems like the regular ones don't have them - so unless Ad-Aware is something of benefit on a regular basis I wonder if it is really worth it?

Lin and Clinton - you guys just having an incredibly bad day? He said with a running leap into the narrow trench behind his desk - - -

Norton:

Yes, I paid Paltalk $15 for the bannerless account. But then I wanted my nickname to be "DaveO", since that's how Mudcatters know me. Couldn't get that earlier, which is why I went with "DaveOesterr". But people had problems with that, so I asked support if I could have a different nickname under the bannerless account. The answer was no, that I had to start again and set up a presence under the desired nickname, and could not transfer the bannerless privilege. So I set up "Uncle_DaveO" and went back to the plain-vanilla status, with popups.

I didn't mind giving them $15 once, but I resent having to pay them another $15 to escape the popups they inflict on me.
