From: Gene

Try this one, NEWFOUNDLANDER!

THE WATER'S SO COLD
Recorded by Stonewall Jackson
Writer: Harlan Howard

[E] The crest of the waves, break [A] over my [E] head
My strength's about [A] gone and soon I'll be [E] dead
I'd rather be dead, out here in the [A] sea
Than to love a [E] woman, who'll [A] never love [E] me.

Oh! The Water's So [A] Cold (The Water's So Cold)
Out here in the [E] dark (out here in the dark)
The Water's So [A] Cold (The Water's So Cold)
[As cold as your [B7] heart]
The lights from the [E] shore (the lights from the shore)
Are fast growing [A] dim (are fast growing dim)
[The Water's So [E] Cold, I can't [A] hardly [E] swim.]

I offered my ring, I offered my name
She said you're a child, she put me to shame
If she saw me now, she'd have to agree
Most men couldn't swim, this far out to sea.

CHORUS

TAG: [The Water's So Cold, I can't hardly swim.]

Note.
(Backup singers)
[Stonewall and backup singers]

Speaking of which, the tune I heard when I saw this title was "The Water is Wide":

The water is cold; I will not swim over,
Nor take a plane, 'cause I'm scared to fly.
Just give me a bridge that can carry cars,
Or we'll find new loves, my love and I.

Again I'm hearing the tune in my min's ear as I read the lyric. Nic Jones recorded it I'm thinkin'.

I know nothing about a song, but the title reminds of me of a joke I heard in Halifax. Seems two sailors had been drinking at the tavern and decided to walk home. They lived on the other side of the harbour and had to walk across the Angus L. MacDonald Bridge. Seems nature called when they were halfway across and since there was no traffic at the time, they decided to aim over the side. Joe says, "Geez, this water is cold", and Mike replied, "Yes, and deep, too!"

Newfoundlander. Please do a search in the forum for a thread called Aunt Martha's Sheep. If you have the words, I'd appreciate it if you could post the lyrics to either or both of the two sequels to that Dick Nolan classic. Thanks

Is this by any chance a version of an Irish song "Willie Leonard, or The Lake of Cool Finn/Shilin"? See Laws Q33 in DT for a version.

Another line goes something like this. The light from the shore is fast growing dim. The water's so cold I can't hardly swim. I've done a lot of searching for this song, but can't seem to find it. Hope someone can help.

I think that is the name of the song. Some of the words might be. The crest of the waves
Break over my head
My strengts about gone
And I'm nearly dead

I think Stonewall Jackson did it. Any one knows this song please reply
