The tune derived from the first two lines of Good King Wenceslas, repeated ad infinitum. The first couplet was always No more Latin no more French No more sitting on the old school bench I've forgotten most of the others, but one, not cited above, was No more walking two by two Like a f***ing kangaroo When I got home for Christmas at the end of my first term, aged 8, I recited this in all innocence to my mum. (In those days that kind of language was not such common currency, at least in 'nice respectable' households). I'll never ever forget the stick I got! |

The Ash Grove "Teacher a bunion" &c was widespread at all my schools, of which there were 7 all told. As I had a wartime childhood, with evacuating from blitz, I attended 4 different schools, with maybe 12 weeks off when should have been at school, between my 8th & 9th birthdays. ~M~ |
