Subject: Beta testers wanted for music software From: pavane Date: 13 Dec 01 - 07:32 AM I am looking for a few volunteers with a variety of PC systems to test the new version of my HARMONY software see this thread . This is a major upgrade including conversion to 32-bit Windows. New functions include a reel-to-hornpipe converter and a Round generator (Round as in type of song). There are major improvements to abc import and export, and to the user interface. I do not have facilities to check that it works on ME, WIN2000 or WIN XP, although it should work, being developed under WIN98.

Subject: RE: Beta testers wanted for music software From: catspaw49 Date: 13 Dec 01 - 07:49 AM LOL.....Pavane, why would I tend to believe that you might put a few people off on your program if you can't make a blue clicky work? (:<)) Spaw |

Subject: RE: Beta testers wanted for music software From: Noreen Date: 13 Dec 01 - 08:54 AM Try this one? HARMONY program to add chords to tunes Can't see why your links didn't work, Pavane. And Spaw- don't be so mean! |

Subject: RE: Beta testers wanted for music software From: Grab Date: 13 Dec 01 - 09:00 AM Try this link. "threads.cfm" for the main page; "thread.cfm" for an individual thread. I'll give it a go if you like. Be warned though that I am a harsh reviewer... ;-) Graham. PS. Just downloaded the Qt toolkit for my next project, which should give built-in portability to any platform, and had a bit of a play with it to see how it goes. It ain't half fun building a dialog box and then going through the menu to see what it would look like in all the other window managers! :-) |

Subject: RE: Beta testers wanted for music software From: catspaw49 Date: 13 Dec 01 - 09:27 AM Geez Noreen, I put in a laugh and a smiley face and everything! Pavane, if that was offensive, I didn't mean it......it was simply a joke....I kinda' liked the irony of it. And I'd do your program, except I'm worthless at that kind of thing. Spaw |

Subject: RE: Beta testers wanted for music software From: Mr Red Date: 13 Dec 01 - 09:31 AM Grab I write my HTML in Excel cells with text manipulation and macros and save as text (.htm) basically to make it as simple as poss to run in any browser. I used to save in Excel95 as HTML and still had to run macros in Word on it as a text file to get bookmarks to work. Using Netscape 4.6 produced interesting effects but when I upgraded to Office 2000 the whole improvement produced so much negative results I ended-up going for broke and controlling the process myself (albeit automated). every time I change anything in Outlook seems to totally re-write the look of it. MS has got so clever it can't agree with itself from one day to the next. I am amazed that Netscape & a 7 year old Pagemaker do so well in the face of it. Back to thread I am interested but I am about to chase the threads to see if it is for me. PM me if appropriate. As an engineer I am good on detail but my music theory is somewhat self taught. Oh & I am a drummer. |

Subject: RE: Beta testers wanted for music software From: GUEST,English Jon Date: 13 Dec 01 - 09:31 AM I'll give it a go, Pavanne. Might be able to run it on a few machines - we have most op. systems at work. Cheers, Jon |

Subject: RE: Beta testers wanted for music software From: Mr Red Date: 13 Dec 01 - 09:40 AM Pavane Yea looks like I could give it a good hearing, I have a lot of songs I haven't documented properly so I would not lose interest. I have two Win 98 machines, different in many respects (750 Mhz Athlon v 266 Cyrix and different sound cards). |

Subject: RE: Beta testers wanted for music software From: Grab Date: 13 Dec 01 - 01:54 PM Pavane, it seems that the download link off your website requires us to pay for the 32-bit version before we download it to do some testing/reviewing for you... BTW, I'm running Win98 on a Duron 800. Mr Red, Qt is a cross-platform software development system, not an HTML thing. I mentioned it since Pavane was talking about running stuff on different platforms - you get that for free by using Qt (in theory). Graham.

Subject: RE: Beta testers wanted for music software From: GUEST,pavane Date: 14 Dec 01 - 02:44 AM Grab, I haven't put it there yet! Just getting ready. And I don't mind constructive criticism, but do point out that there are limits to what I can do in my spare time! (I spent last night adding a feature requested by JohninBrisbane) When it is in place, I will PM you with the password. Thanks for all the offers, and I will be in touch shortly. The download will be about 3mb, but most of this is the VB runtime & DLLs. Oh yes, the blicky - the machine here is somewhat locked down and I couldn't view the page source to see the URL directly! (Can only get to sites starting www as well!) Mr Red - the program provides an automatic drum part facility, or you can set up one bar of drums and replicate throughout the tune. |

Subject: RE: Beta testers wanted for music software From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Dec 01 - 04:32 AM Say, Pavane - will it make files in SongWright format, the format used for tunes in the Digital Tradition? Wish we could go to another standard, but that's the format Dick has been using for years and it would be a mess to try to convert tunes. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Beta testers wanted for music software From: pavane Date: 14 Dec 01 - 07:14 AM Joe, I don't see why I couldn't do it, but I don't have a definition of the SongWright format to hand. Maybe someone could email me one, (pavane@greenhedges.com)and I could then try to write import and export routines. Otherwise, I might be able to work it out from some examples.

Subject: RE: Beta testers wanted for music software From: Grab Date: 14 Dec 01 - 08:29 AM Sure, I know how it is. Everyone and his brother wants their own features, and they all want different ones... :-) Anyway, I guess we can all have a play with it to transcribe a few tippical toons and see what happens. Graham. |

Subject: RE: Beta testers wanted for music software From: GUEST,Kernow John Date: 14 Dec 01 - 09:11 AM Pavane I'll be happy to give it a go. ABCMus converts from Songfile to ABC and can then save as a midi. Don't know if that helps. KJ |
|
Subject: RE: Beta testers wanted for music software From: MMario Date: 14 Dec 01 - 09:30 AM what we need is something that will take midi or abc and convert to songwrighte - preferably saving lyrics with it. pavane - I have that (songwright format) somewhere on my computer - I will forward it to you as soon as I can find it. |

Subject: RE: Beta testers wanted for music software From: Don Firth Date: 14 Dec 01 - 01:15 PM Yeah, pavane, I'm game to give it a try. I'm trying to get my song collection into some kind of order, and it sounds like this could help a lot. My computer is a Pentium II, 350MHz, 128MB RAM, with a 9.4 GB HD, cobbled together for me a couple of years ago by ACI Micro, a "screwdriver shop" (they build computers to customer specifications). It was state-of-the-art once. Operating system is Windows 98. Don Firth |

Subject: RE: Beta testers wanted for music software From: pavane Date: 14 Dec 01 - 05:36 PM Apologies to all - I arrived home this evening (working away during the week) to find that Mrs Pavane wants the kitchen painted this weekend, so I wont be able to get anything uploaded before next weekend at the earliest. Please be patient, and I will contact you by PM when I am ready. Thanks again to all. Don & others, the program works fine on my P166, so anything better should be OK. I will look forward to receiving the Songwright spec, but do warn that HARMONY was conceived for a specific purpose, which imposes restrictions on what it can handle. |

Subject: RE: Beta testers wanted for music software From: pavane Date: 22 Dec 01 - 06:56 PM The software is now in place, after a bit of a delay. I have PM'ed the previous respondents with details of how to participate. Are there any more volunteers (I only have 6 so far).

Subject: RE: Beta testers wanted for music software From: pavane Date: 27 Jan 02 - 03:29 PM HI, testers Any news from the front line? I am keen to get the new version out onto the Web, as it has so many improvements and new features, but I need your feedback. (Joe, I know you have been otherwise occupied...) Thanks. |
