Subject: EuroGathering 2002 - Planning Part 2
From: Noreen
Date: 13 Dec 01 - 08:00 AM

So... this EuroGathering will be on the weekend of the

4th/5th May 2002

to include the UK May Day bank holiday on Monday 6th. And we'll travel over on Friday 3rd... and those of us who have no lectures to get back to may not return until Tuesday 7th... (I can do some course research in Brussels main library perhaps to justify the extra time away from my studies *grin*)

Investigating plane fares from Manchester atm. This will be fun!

Noreen

Return Sabina flights from Birmingham can cost less than £70 per person at present. Can be booked online through the SkyDeals.co.uk website!

Ah- but will Sabena still be a going concern by May, I wonder...!

Great price though- less than the ferry- but then there won't be the singing/playing on the high seas if I fly...

Noreen,

Brussels National Aiport would definitely be preferable if flying as Brussels Midi is a railway station!

There is also the option of Ryanair, which is very cheap if it operates from your area, which flies to "Brussels South" Airport (Charleroi). A coach link from every Ryanair flight will then take you into Brussels and deposit you (appropriately) at the "Wild Geese" Irish pub! If anybody chooses this route, I can of course collect them from the Wild Geese.

P.S. Thanks for starting the "Part 2", I'll be posting up a revised list of Probable and Possibles shortly.

*grin* Wish i'd thought of that, Richard!

According to ebookers I could fly from Manchester to either
Brussels National/Zaventem, BE[BRU]
or
Brussels Midi, Be[ZYR]

D'you think the planes mind landing at the railway station? Would make it easier for catching connections...

Looking forward to meeting you mooman!!

ferry I think, for the chance of a session on board again. They are the old ferries, like wot we travelled out on, but refurbished to put the price up! Don't know about Flying, cos have to get guitar etc safely there. (previous experience not good)

probably won't allow accordians anyway skip-dangerous instruments!

If anyone is going by boat from Hull - I'm trying to make the gathering the starting (or final) point of my annual holiday, probably going to Hull from Belgium, so I could give someone a lift one way (some two if one of them is prepared to spend the drive stretched out on the mattress in the back!). Looking forward to seeing you all again, particularly MudGuard who plied me with excellent food and fresh air in Munich last month and who still hasn't got his 'thank you' mail! Thank you, Mudcat!

Ouch! Delta Airlines and Music Instruments... that ain´t no good combo...
Once in the olden days when the sun was much sunnier and rollo still had money to spend I went to Florida with delta airlines, my aunt, the girl I loved and my true love which in fact was (and is still) a tenor banjo.
As I did not own a hardcase, I asked if I could take the banjo with me as hand luggage. Yes, Sir, no problem. the banjo was placed in the storage over my head. Then check in for atlanta. Everything all right.
But when I enter the plane (it was a Lockheed Something, the same type of machine we had just left), the stewardess master dragon barks: "Sir, you cannot take THAT with you as hand luggage, it is dangerous to have it in the passenger bay(did she fear I would play a song for her? Not for this ole cerberus!), give it to me, we will transport it down in the extra luggage compartment."
She grabs my precious, I whine "she will steal it, yes, yes, gollum!", she hands out a bill with a number and a lot of very small letters, then pushes me into the passenger bay.
Half an hour later we have seated, fastened our seat belts, watched the funny film with the nice girl making fuss with a live vest (very brilliant avantgarde humour, but too intelligent for a broad audience, noone joined my laughters), and I start reading the note with the number...
"...we inform you that this piece of luggage is NOT included in any travel insurance you might have paid for..." Yes indeed I had paid for!
Then came the chime, the red light, the call to fasten seatbelts again, and the air holes. My voice trembled, when I asked my two women about the fate of my banjo. Sure it was broken!
Atlanta at last. We rushed to fetch our bags. Every bag is there, but - alas, no banjo! the last two or three luggages appear at the "sushi bar", but still no banjo! With nerves shaking I ask a uniformed bystander where I can receive info about my banjo. The u.b. looks at my bill: "Luggage of this category will be deposed in an extra room, you cannot miss it, first right, second left, then turn three times, speak out the Unspeakable backwards and puff!" Puff? Puff.
At last we find this mysterious room... and first thing I see is NOT a banjo of any kind, but... a broken pram... This was the moment I broke out in tears. And THAT was the moment when the second cart came with the rest of the extra luggage, including my unbroken banjo.
The trip back to europe we made with exactly the same bord crew. No, sir, no problem to take your banjo as hand luggage. Really no problem, sir. Not from miami to atlanta, not from atlanta to new york, not from new york to hamburg.
Take my advice, folks. If Delta takes over the slots, travel by ferry if you don't want to die with heart attack.

Sorry all, SABENA ("Such-a-Bad-Experience-Never-Again" as it was known to those of us who regularly used its so-called services), the Belgian national airline went down the financial gurgler a few weeks back, so it isn't a travel option for Eurogathering. A rescue plan based on portions of it is being put together under the name of DAT, but hasn't commenced operations yet. Ryanair Stanstead to Brussels South/Charleroi is by far the cheapest option. Book on their internet site. And last time I flew them, they were quite happy to take a guitar as cabin baggage!

Brussels-Midi is a train station, not an airport. It's the Eurostar terminal. If arriving late at night, be a bit careful, it has a bad rep as regards muggings/vandalism etc. Best to taxi outta there as soon as possible, don't hang around.

Happy holidays to all

Hope I am not going over old points, meeting on the 4-5th of May. Europa Day is May 9th.

Did you guys consider a Sing Song then? Other question there are many more and diverse Folk traditions on the Continent, so how in the world did you arrange it so they are represented?

Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2002 - Planning Part 2

GUEST, guesting, the representation depends on who gets involved! It's not organised apart from a location being arranged and help given to find accommodation and other neccessities of life- such as places to play, sing and dance.

I hope this answers your question. Why don't you come along and represent whatever tradition you choose?

Noreen

My visage may cause some confusion and, my idea of Folk music a public disturbance.

But you are quite correct the event seems to enjoy virtual fame rather than media exposure, that may explain why there is no mention of it in the Press.

Thought I'd refresh, and to ask who might be going by ferry from Hull to Zeebruge? There is an early booking offer on with P&O at the moment, but time is short! before it runs out. Prices have risen a lot (they call it "fluid" pricing !! But it might be worth booking now- I am definately going. Bill?-someone give him a nudge, Brian?, Skipjack? Noreen? Patrish? The last years German meeting travellers. Get back to me.Cars or trains from Zeebruge?

That was £407 for a car and 4 passengers, Eric? Add petrol... the £70 return flight still looks good to me.

OK, we'd miss out on the music on the ferry, but we'd have more time actually in Brussels.

This might price it'self out of the market.

Dear Dave,

It will be in Brussels from 3-6 May (7th also for any hangers on as that's my 50th birthday!). It will be based mostly around my humble abode and nearby facilities and hostelries. I live in a South-East suburb of Brussels easily reachable from Brussels Zaventem or Brussels South (Charleroi) and from Brussels Midi and Central rail stations (a bus from the centre of town stops almost outside our door).

Best regards,

mooman

P.S. If Tony "Fossil" Fuell reads this post I'd be interested to discuss the St Andrew's possibility you mentioned before with you. I'm not sure if you have a cookie, if so you can PM me, otherwise my email is mcmoo@mcmoo.com

Richard, I only found one Brussels city map on the web, at http://www.trabel.com/brussels-mapstr-zuid.htm, and it isn't much use. It has a map of the south of the city, around the Palais de Justice, but I suppose you live too far out to be found on any street plan. Can you suggest something? Otherwise I'll have to do what I usually do - go into a motorway petrol station and pretend to have a look at a city map prior to buying ... then leave hurriedly before I forget the details.

Hey, folks - here's what I think an excellent idea put forward by Giok in the 'Stony Stratford: the nightmare continues' thread: a raffle "in aid of our favourite web-site", with items donated by those taking part. Why don't we do the same in Brussels? I haven't thought about it but I'd be willing to donate some CDs for a start. I'd also be willing to send regular reminders via this thread till mid-April and bring the raffle tickets from Britain. Opinions, please!
