Subject: RE: Any old time music on Maui? From: GUEST,Adam Smith Date: 26 Dec 12 - 04:06 AM I know this thread is pretty old, but are there any old time players on the big island? I've been here a month and have looked around, but I can't find much. Lots of bluegrass, but I can't find an old time fiddler anywhere! Feel free to email me at Adam.blythe.smith@gmail.com |
Subject: RE: Any old time music on Oahui? From: GUEST Date: 10 Jul 11 - 11:25 AM We go back to the 60's with Don Ho and many old time singers. Tahitian Lani use to be the place for the old time Hawaian singing and playing, is there such a place today? thanks Karolyn 858-756-2027 San Diego |
Subject: RE: Any old time music on Maui? From: Mark Cohen Date: 19 Dec 01 - 07:18 PM Well, I heard from Al and Barbara before they left, and sent them an email with phone numbers. So far I haven't heard anything...I guess they're having too much fun on the beach. (Which makes perfectly good sense to me!) But we still might get together, either here on the Big Island, or on Maui if I can swing it. Will let all you jealous folks know what happens! Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Any old time music on Maui? From: Al Date: 16 Dec 01 - 04:38 PM Thanks for all the great info. We'll definitely try the Banyan tree idea. When we get back we'll post our findings. Mahalo, Al and Barbara Lubanes |

Subject: RE: Any old time music on Maui? From: Mark Cohen Date: 15 Dec 01 - 07:35 AM I don't know Maui, but my friend who's an excellent guitarist is in the process of moving there. His tastes run more towards 70s folk rockers (CSN&Y, Eagles, etc.), Eric Clapton, and acoustic blues than old-time, but he can keep his eyes open. As far as I know, there's no real old-time music here on the Big Island. If there is, and I've missed it, I will be very upset. I haven't plunked my guitar next to a fiddle and banjo for over ten years... There are, however, regular contradances on Oahu, and where there are contradances there are usually old-time musicians. I've lost the link to the Hawaii contradance website, but if you do a Google search on +contradance +Hawaii you should find it. Keep in touch. I would recommend a day or two on the Big Island if you can swing it...the volcano is awesome, and I can offer you a place to stay in Hilo right next to a little black sand beach. If you join the Mudcat (it's easy, free, and Spam-free), you can send me a personal message. See the FAQ thread if you run into problems. E komo mai! (Welcome!) Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Any old time music on Maui? From: Barry Finn Date: 15 Dec 01 - 06:56 AM Check out Lahiana. A couple of the bars used to have some of the locals playing. There were a few players/singers living there (usually boat people) but I'm going back near 20 yrs. You might also want to try to get an earful of "da kind" of traditional music of the Islands. If you happen to be hanging out playing an instrument in Banyan Park (Lahiana) aajust across from the old lighthouse the odds are (or at least they were) pretty fair a local musician will pull on up for a taste & you can go from there. Good Luck, Barry |
Subject: RE: Any old time music on Maui? From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 15 Dec 01 - 01:01 AM Drop a note to Mark Cohen in the personal pages to make sure he gets this. There are groups at the hotels, but I haven't been there for a while, so am ignorant of current conditions. Try www.hawaii.com/entertainment. Click on Maui. On the right side are clicks for concerts, etc. If there is a ticketed event you want to see, get reservations now! |
