Yeah Paul.......It triggered one of the biggest brawls we have ever had around here. Hopefully, we've learned a bit since then and can let it pass. I was tempted to just post the lyrics, but maybe it's better to see what can happen at times. Much bigger and nastier things have been debated and argued since then, but that thread was a sort of watermark where this place lost a lot of innocense and camaraderie. It's probably better now than it was then when many of us were so open that we laid ourselves open.......

As someone who has experienced the rough end of a pineapple too many times, I wish you weren't so quick to help people, Spaw! This is one of those songs that promote idiocy of the first Bin Liner water!

Yeah, did seem a little more 'heavy' than most of the debates I've seen while I've been coming here.

Craig, I can only speak for myself, of course, but I would sooner see discussion on stuff than have it swept under the carpet, & 'tactfully avoided'. I actually like to know what people think on the subject, & I've learned a lot about how even among the sensible, reasonable folks that inhabit the Mudcat there are feelings that run so deep.

I came along here in the wake of that thread, so I never knew the Mudcat in it's more innocent days. In fact I haven't read the thread, though I've heard enough references to it to know I'd better nerve myself up to read it.

I'm a believer in airing and exploring differences here, where it can't get too physical if we disagree. But I think we owe it to each other, and to the people out in the world who are directly involved in these awful affairs, to keep it level and reasoned and learn from the people we disagree with, and read what the say with some attention before jumping in with our response.

And a lot of the time we do that, and I think we do it better now than we have. And sometimes I haven't done that too well myself.

I'm glad you had a great time in Ireland, Ro1sin Ron. The thing is, at the end of the day, there is more in common between people there than there is divides them, even when it doesn't seem that way. And that's true in most places and most conflicts. Especially here on the Mudcat when at times it turns a little uglier than it should.

I just put this through my spellchecker, as I need to. When it came to "armorlite", it suggested it ought to be "infirmity" - a wise choice maybe. (And when I tried the official spelling "armalite", it suggested "almighty" - it's a very cynical spellchecker sometimes.)

While this is back at the top, I'll explain just a bit more. While the thread itself may even be mild by the standard of some we have run lately, the spirit of the thread was what made the difference at that time. Also, it wasn't just the one thread (as it never is)....it was the additional threads that it spawned and it sent the joint into a turmoil and it became almost an epiphany, and certainly a turning point in the history of the 'Cat. Combined with the introspection of the threads this one created collaterally, it was a tough time.

Happier note? Sure....We got a little tougher and it eventually may have turned into a general plus because we were a bit in lala land. And the comeback out of it, what got us on track again, was the first of the tavern threads......a brilliant idea started by Lonesome EJ. Leej popped in with that first tavern and it gave us all a chance to unwind and feel about for a course....much like in 3D.

Written by a guy from Lurgan, a schoolteacher who never handled an armalite in his life, but whose name I never theless wouldn't want to publicise. And yes, It's Andytown, Andersontown, Belfast. One of the very worst types of republican song, in my opinion.

Don't know that one - sorry. "Armalite" is quite a well written song and something about it appeals to something deep in my Irish psyche but when all is said and done it just glorifies violence.

Ro1sin,

you have asked for 'go home you British soldiers' in another thread and there has been a response (both lyrics and tune). To refind old threads started by you:
- easiest: you could 'trace' them - you could (try to) remember which thread name you used and use the 'Forum search' under 'quick links' (see above) and enter (parts of) the thread name under 'subject' - you could remeber (part of) the thread name you used and go to the main page and enter the name under 'filter' and set 'age' to a date that includes the date at which you have posted your request originally.

One of these methods will find you your own thread including the responses.

Wolfgang
