Subject: Advertising Availability of MID2TEXT

Before repluing to a query in The NoteWorthy Composer User Forum, I thought it would be politic to check with Allan of Australia - and for others to see his reply.

The user query was for an ABC to Midi converter to get the tunes for folk songs and trad tunes.

Regards John

I got one from the ABC homepage. It is appropriately called abc2midi. The URL is

http://www.gre.ac.uk/~c.walshaw/abc

I have been playing around with ABC, and it seems that every program offers its own "extensions", so there is some problems with certain ABC files that have been converted from other forms.

Hi, John - I think this was the Noteworthy Composer Forum thread you saw. I thought I'd be smart and post a reply with links, but their forum doesn't take HTML like ours does. Oh, well.
Anyhow, MIDITXT doesn't do what the writer wants, which is to convert ABC to MIDI or Noteworthy's NWC format. In fact, we've had some problems using MIDITXT to convert MIDI files made on Noteworthy to ABC. They play OK, but they aren't correct ABC notation. Alan Foster says there's something weird about the way Noteworthy makes MIDI files.
In short, it's probably not a good idea to advertise MIDITXT for now. It's a program designed specifically for posting tunes on this forum, a job it does quite well.

By the way. At the same web site that I mentioned two messages ago, there is link to get a program called "playabc" which will directly play ABC files either through a MIDI system or the usual fm synthesizer in a sound card. It works fine with my ESS (Soundblaster-like) card and it saves the trouble of making and saving a MIDI file.

G'day,
Almost missed this one.

As Joe said, MIDItext is specifically designed for posting simple melodies to this forum. It does both MIDI and ABC in an attempt to unite both camps. I'm incredibly short of time at the moment, but am working on solving the problem with Noteworthy MIDI files.

I haven't had time to check out Max's multimedia extensions to this forum, but the MIDI part of MIDItext may become redundant soon and there is MID2ABC and ABC2MID for those who prefer to use ABC. I may still continue with a SIMPLE ABC <-> MIDI converter for this forum, there are a couple of things not to like about MID2ABC including the fact that it doesn't always get it right (still, I suppose that applies to MIDItext as well!)

Cheers,
Alan
