Folk, blues, country, rock, jazz? There's a keyboard player at Squire Rockwells on Route 236, a little ways west past the beltway (I495) that's outstanding (Tom Saputo). He can play any song you name, and play it right. He attracts some really talented people who come in and jam with him. Check him out if you get a chance. Whatever you get up to, enjoy your stay. |

Also, that will put you relatively close to Nanny O'Briens where each Monday night is their celtic jam session. I highly recommend that. Bobert I don't know how I would get to the event on the 8th - but it will be great if you can make the 9th! Sounds like the Chantey Sing and the Irish are the two events to be at. I've also had a couple of PMs for an evening of just some quiet visiting time - maybe some music - but mostly just a "How do you do?" and get to meet each other. No date or time on that yet. I am bringing a guitar, I bought a Seagull as I don't trust the baggage on the airlines with my Mossman, so hopefully it will arrive intact and I'll be able to play a tune or two if that works out. Hope to see as many as possible but don't get in a wreck or trouble over it!! Steve |

If you get nosebleeds at high altitudes, you might want to take the elevator. I believe that escalator may be the tallest in the world. If not the tallest, then certainly one of the tallest. |

"This is an airplane that doesn't fly. That's a building we can't go into. There's the river and the airport's on the other side" - that sort of thing. It would have been thrilling. I even knew the social workers there because they worked just down the hall, although there are probably fresh faces now. 1997 was a long time ago, military-wise. I regret that I waited until right before I left to take the Metro anywhere. (I parked in a garage that was locked at midnight when I went to see Les Miserables, got a ride home and had to use the Metro to pick up my car the next day.) It was clean, I felt safe, and I understood the route signs a lot more than I did the London "Tubes." Have fun! |

Subject: RE: Coming to Washington D.C. in March From: Bill D Date: 27 Feb 02 - 06:25 PM regarding a MUCH earlier post...the Metro is not all 'subway'...it is underground downtown, then come up to run along train tracks in places, (then dives down again on the part that heads up to Wheaton)...but it is pretty easy to use, and is 99% safe! Will talk to you when you call about exact timing and possible rides. I wish the Open Sing hadn't fallen on the 1st this month. |

Open Contra Dance Band at Glen Echo Park on Friday, March 8th at 8:30 PM. Band with up to fifty pick-up musicians plays for dance with some 600 dancers the second Friday of every month. Last month we had 21 fiddlers... truely unbelievable. "Beolach" concert in Shepherdstown, March 9 at the Frank Auditorium, at 8PM. Cape Breton and Celtic at it's finest. |

The Irish in America CD was the first attempt to chronicle the Irish-American experience in song and runs in a timeframe from the Revolutionary War to about 1980. All the songs are traditional or from the very early vaudeville period when the singers were likely to have worked at laboring jobs on railroads and sailing ships, for example, as did Thomas F. Casey (Drill Ye Tarriers Drill) or Ned Harrigan (McNally's Row of Flats). The CD has received excellent reviews in Sing Out, Irish Music, The Living Tradition and in this month's Dirty Linen with accolades such as "a glowing example of scholarly research," "passionate singing" and "the key into a whole minset and tradition." This is CarolC - I don't know what that Norton fellow is talking about. But I sure have enjoyed spending the evening with these lovely people, making music and chatting.
Hey M. Ted! Where were you? This is Ferrara now.... We want to do a group post! Well how do you describe a great evening without repeating what everybody else said? We had a bit of trouble identifying each other until Carol C got to the Pub, but we made up for a late start by singing and talking until an indecently late hour. Enjoyed every minute. There is something so mellow and magical about making music with other Mudcatters. With an autoharp, two guitars, a zither, a MacArthur harp and an accordion, somehow we managed to make it all fit together. Or, we just listened to one person for a while. Ask Carol to play some of her slow airs and laments, or a Finnish waltz. It can sure change your ideas about accordions to hear her. And Norton is a fine picker and we found lots of songs we all knew. If versions were a little different, we found some harmonies that worked together. Well, sigh, it would really be foolish for us to talk and make music all night so we are going to post this and say goodnight.... Sigh.... well, here's the REAL BillD/.....who has NO idea what these people just said in my name!...but it was a fine evening!...We heard music, then we MADE music!....Ieven tuned at the autoharp, and Norton could follow anything I did..so........ anyway, it was fun...but it is late..so...you all come see us .... |

We rode the Metro and were amazed at how safe, clean, and easy it was to use. I take it old Mose made it okay on the trip out? And what a surprise when Craig called for Mudcatters to stand and make themselves known. Regular posters and lurkers alike, amounting to somewhere around ten or twelve, all stood and gave their Mudcat names. That was really gratifying to see.
Ferrara and Bill D very graciously offered their living room for those Mudcatters who wanted to get together after the sing to share tunes and chat. There were just four of us present, Bill, Ferrara, Norton and myself. But what really impressed me, aside from the warm and familiar feel to the gathering, was the variety of kinds of music that just four people brought to the mix. What we did could best be described as a sing/play around. Most of the sing/play arounds I've been to have tended to suffer from having only a handful of people because there tended not to be very much variety of material. This was so far from being the case with these people, it was almost like having ten or twenty people instead of just four, musically speaking.
It was great meeting Norton and getting to know him a little. He's a fine singer and guitar player. What most folks don't know is that he used to be a cowboy. He fascinated us with stories of his years out on the range with no company but the cattle and his giant draught horse in 100 degrees below zero (F) temperatures and total whiteout conditions. But his trusted horse always knew the way, and Norton, impervious to the cold and the wind, whiled away the long hours between feeding stations playing his guitar and singing beautiful songs to his horse. It was these songs he sang to us, and we could close our eyes while he sang and imagine ourselves out on the range with him, watching the steam rising off his horse's back and listening to the sound of the wind freezing as it blew, making a soft tinkling sound as it fell on the twenty feet of snowfall on the ground. I still have a slight touch of frostbite in my big toe left over from my evening with Norton ;-)
And of course it was great to see Bill D and Ferrara again. I had the pleasure of meeting them briefly at the FSGW Getaway, and it was really nice to see them again and to be able to make music with them in such an intimate setting. They both have an amazing variety of songs committed to memory, which they sing and play beautifully on their various osbcure (and some not so obscure) string instruments. Have fun with the rest of your visit, Steve. Sorry I won't be able to make it to any of the other festivities. It was a great experience meeting you and spending some time with you. |

Subject: RE: Coming to Washington D.C. in March From: Bill D Date: 12 Mar 02 - 08:37 PM the concert was quite nice!...very well presented and a wide variety of music...A moderate number headed for SongBob's house afterwards, including Norton and yers truly... with Ferrara...chatting was done, then devious endeavors got singing started, and we made music till almost 2!...I drove Norton back to his hotel and he allowed he enjoyed his week ...mostly..*grin*...I'm not sure he appreciated the entertainment we staged for him on the subway/Metro...I have a few pictures from the singing at SongBob's, and will send them in soon..(a couple are a bit dark, as I tried to do some without flash) I enjoyed meeting Norton and truly envy a lot about his life in Idaho, though I suppose I am thoroughly a city boy. |

This month March 23rd, Susette and I open at 9:00 with Comedy and Old Time Country Music. Linn Barnes and Alison Hampton are the special guests for the second set at 10:00 playing Celtic and Appalachian music on harp, lute, mandolin and pipes.
