Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Preschool solstice songs From: CapriUni Date: 20 Dec 01 - 01:21 PM a blue clickie for the Witchvox site I love Witchvox! Also, check out "The Holly and the Ivy" in the digitrad. That's a traditional carol that contains elements of both the Christian and Pagan Holy days...

We used them at the pre-school until it was shut down for improprieties, such as they be, deemed by the authorities.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Preschool solstice songs From: GUEST Date: 19 Dec 01 - 10:47 PM Heya I checked out some of those links, MMArio, that was an interesting trip! Some good articles in there dealing with the mixing of the pagan and christian celebrations...http://www.witchvox.com/holidays/yule/yule97_1.html And the carol of the bells link was equally interesting. What do you all do for a living? thanks for your brainpower! cheers Liza C |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Preschool solstice songs From: GUEST,BigDaddy Date: 19 Dec 01 - 12:00 AM That was quick! The VHS I mentioned contains four "Little Bear" episodes and is titled, ""Little Bear - Winter Tales." The episode I mentioned is contained on this tape and is titled, "Winter Solstice." It's available at a number of retailers for $9.95. Probably at the library as well. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Preschool solstice songs From: GUEST,BigDaddy Date: 18 Dec 01 - 11:53 PM "To Drive The Cold Winter Away" is good though perhaps a bit involved and lengthy for that age. If you can get hold of a VHS or DVD of one of the "Little Bear" TV shows there's a simple song which goes, "The snow is cold, the snow is new. Little Bear loves the Winter and I do too." Just change the name each time around. Simple tune and a really lovely little episode celebrating the season without religion (these are forest animals doing the celebrating). I'll see if I can find a title for the episode. Off the top of my head I would think Vince Guaraldi's "Christmastime is Here" would work if you change it to "Wintertime." Good luck. I spent a lot of time trying to find childrens' books which dealt with spirituality without espousing a particular dogma and had little success. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Preschool solstice songs From: CapriUni Date: 18 Dec 01 - 08:57 PM Nicole -- Those words to "Carol of the Bells" are the English words -- and they're not a translation (A true translation of the lyrics wouldn't even come close to scanning). It is a wonderful song, but it's a bit complicated to sing for a pre-school concert, since it's a quodlibet for two voices. There's a webpage for the song, with a brief history, two versions of English lyrics, and the real translation of the lyrics here, for those who are interested...

"Carol of the Bells" |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Preschool solstice songs From: NicoleC Date: 18 Dec 01 - 08:14 PM Hmmm... the tune to "Carol of the Bells" is based on a pre-Christian Ukranian solstice song. I can't help you with the original lyrics, though. What about "Deck the Halls?" |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Preschool solstice songs From: Ned Ludd Date: 18 Dec 01 - 08:06 PM O.k. so I misinterpreted your initial post. kids should be encouraged to sing. I guess I have just been soured by hearing people who own a belief because that was the way they were 'brought up' My apologies. The only song I can think of would be Hal an tow.which is in the digitrad. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Preschool solstice songs From: GUEST,Liza C Date: 18 Dec 01 - 07:21 PM Ned Ludd, what does "they do it so I can" mean? yes i did use up and coming pagans, and I suppose I should have been more careful. In the future I will be. heck-- I grew up with plenty of Christmas songs, and I don't deny these children any of that. Those tunes are the easy ones to find. I loved the yearly showing of Frosty the Snowman (with Burl Ives as narrator) and those silly snowmen gliding across the snow...(does this date me?) This is simply a celebration of solstice. I want young kids to find more meaning, find it sooner than I did, and look deeper than the typical. Animaterra , thanks for the Allouette Iselin song, that'll work well. CapriUno and MMArio, I would be really interested in anything you found along those lines. Thanks for your help!

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Preschool solstice songs From: CapriUni Date: 18 Dec 01 - 06:32 PM MMArio -- could you post some links to some of those songs you've found? Maybe someone here *does* know the tunes, and, if they saw the lyrics could make midis for them Heck I might know one or two...

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Preschool solstice songs From: MMario Date: 18 Dec 01 - 06:21 PM I can't blame ANYONE these days for looking for non-commercial songs to teach pre-schoolers. I've seen a lot of short, simple Solstice type lyrics on various pages - but virtually none of them have tune indications or midi's or abc's or sheet music. which means unless you can find someone who knows them it's kinda hard to learn them.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Preschool solstice songs From: CapriUni Date: 18 Dec 01 - 06:11 PM Liza C-- I was going to ask earlier, but my 'puter froze up before I could hit the submit button -- Is this an actual class of pre-school Neo-Pagans? (Every Pagan function I go to these days has parents with young children and babies on hips, so it is certainly possible, especially if this is a home-schooling thing, and now that I think about it, these young'uns derserve little carols for themselves, too! Maybe I'll write something -- not enough time for your thing, though) Or did you mean "Pagan" in the more general non-religious-honoring-Nature sort of way? I think your last reply tells me that it's the latter... but in any case, little kids like the familiar -- stuff they already know (they've only known it for a few years, after all!), so I'd stick with the winter songs they know already (jingle bells, etc.) Mother Goose rhymes are good -- maybe "Eensy Weensy Spider" (??) for the return of the sun... Also, songs like that -- with body movements -- help channel the fidget energy If you yourself are Pagan, I can understand how you yourself might feel uncomfortable singing a religious message you don't believe in (or even a "commercial" message in songs like Frosty the Snowman and Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer), and kids can pick up on that... So I dunno.... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Preschool solstice songs From: Ned Ludd Date: 18 Dec 01 - 05:44 PM They do it so I can? Pre-school children should be allowed to grow up and then they can decide if they need a religion. teach about the seasons by all means. It was you who used the phrase 'up and coming Pagans' |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Preschool solstice songs From: GUEST Date: 18 Dec 01 - 05:14 PM As in: am I only looking for pagan songs to indoctrinate these helpless little children? Or is there such a thing as "open mind songs" --perhaps I shouldn't attempt to understand what you mean... Personally, I find that celebrating the seasons with children is far more important than celebrating the Christian holidays, (do they need much help here?) and if I can tie in the pre-christian (why pre-?) with this mad dash towards christmas then maybe some of it will make sense. A thanks towards the earth. A sense of the cycle of things. A looking around us. I'm sorry-- have I over reacted?? Liza |

Subject: Preschool solstice songs From: GUEST,Liza C Date: 18 Dec 01 - 04:26 PM Hi everybody-- I have often perused your forum and found many funny (and helpful) things here...so now I ask you wise mudcatters this: I'm putting on a (short) simple show at my daughters preschool, (just voice and guitar) and while I know a few good songs, the kids are from 2- 5. I don't want to go over their heads and they need to sing along or I am lost as they begin to wriggle and twitch. Anybody got any winners for the wee set of up and coming pagans?? thanks for any and all of your thoughts... Liza C. |
