OK, I finally got it...

I didn't find the original version for years, because it was NOT recorded by the New Christy Minstrels! It was recorded by the Back Porch Majority, another folk group led by Randy Sparks, under the title "The Road". You can find it on their "Best of" album.

Jason

OK, I finally figured out that the title of the song is THIS ROAD. That's according to this web site which has a sound file, and this web site which has the lyrics.

GUEST might be right about it being written by Randy Sparks, though I haven't found any confirmation of this. Both those web sites follow the abominable but common practice of mentioning only the performer, not the songwriter.

Sorry that I'm wrong. This is released in the "John Denver Sings" album.

So what's the title of that song?

Allmusic.com doesn't list any album called "Capitol Records Sessions."

Hi folks,

Does anyone know the title and the writer of this
song, probably something from the 60's.

The lyrics as I know them:

**************

This road winds down through the valley
Through the warm green meadows I call home
Turn around and it leads across the mountains
Where the wind keeps telling me to roam.

Down this road there's a fire always burning
There's a place at the table set for me
It's the same road that leads way over yonder
Where there's such a lot of world I'd like to see
There's so much of this old world I'd like to see.

Tell my momma not to worry
I couldn't bear to know I made her cry
Tell my poppa if you see him
I tried, but I just couldn't say goodbye.

I long to see the places they call somewhere
It's been my dream ever since my life began
And someday when my wandering days are over
I'll be coming down this road
You'll see me walking back this road
I'll be coming back this road a better man.

**************

Many thanks, and happy holidays,

Alan
