My son Ian got me a nifty Fender lunchbox. It's shaped like a Fender Amp (I use a '65 Vibrolux). Inside were 3 packs of Fender lights, guitar polish and a shammy in a soft Fender bag, and a pack of picks. But of course, seeing Ian glow with his new guitar was the best present of all.

I did it. The chocolate motorbike is shrinking.... I took a couple of photos and ate a tail light.

Alas, Ken and Barbie were too tall to make a decent pose with it..... and now it's even shorter.

For once, everyone took me seriously when I said I really didn't want anything for Christmas. So for the first time, I got exactly what I asked for this year :)

Maybe it's because they all know I'll be on the other side of the planet in a few months...

My best Christmas gift was finding out from my sweetie in Melbourne that he now has enough frequent flyer miles for TWO round trips all the way to Oz!

Wonderful!!!

Of course, the best gift was having my family together for the holidays, including my oldest (daughter) back for a visit from her freshman year at Tulane. As far as tangible gifts are concerned, my in-laws gave me a pair of excellent tickets to the "Down From The Mountain" concert in Boston on February 2, along with a gift certificate to Legal Seafoods (a great seafood restaurant in Boston) that I'm planning to use the same night. The icing on the cake was the "Oh Brother" soundtrack that my son gave me. I'm a lucky guy.

Morticia - rearrange these words into a well known phrase or saying.... 'off, bog'.

AAARRRRGGHHH. May go with the photo idea. And yes, the bratling got her present, thank you so much... it was all intact, at least it was when I gave it to her....

I sat just now & thought back about my childhood Christmastimes, and I fondly remember well loved toys, but the best present ever: many years back when my ex was stationed in South Korea, I joined him & what a time we had! Since I was not allowed to go into the stores on post, he did the shopping, but we got many of our produce items from the large market nearby. At Christmas, there was a party in the local Rec hall for the families, at which he & I were performing. There were Christmas goodies , and they gave out stockings filled with grocery items from "back home" including some "Sunkist" oranges. I had a tear in my eyes when I saw them, because I had been getting the mandarin-like oranges at the market, and had not had some of my favorite good old American things in several months. Then when we stopped to get the mail on our way home, there was a package from his folks & mine. Our mom had sent us clothes, Christmas things, and some things his young siblings had made for us, and a Christmas card which they all signed which really made me cry, and of course, some cookies his mom made for us. I think that the real gift was the realization that our simple life back home , filled with loving family, was the greatest life on earth. Quite a gift for a 21 year old girl from a small midwestern city.

It got to you intact, I was worried it'd get a bit smashed up in the packaging. Well, I dunno, eat it... YOur other post said it was broken open *the parcel) was the bratlings little gifts in there too... I hope so.

Glad to hear you had a lovely time trying to get her to eat cooked sprouts, I can't personally blame her, sprouts are the work of the devil, they are pure evil. Should be banned from the best allotment in town.

Good luck in the new year...

Best material present: a DVD player from my brother the techno-geek. He gave one to my other brother, too; frankly, I think this is his sneaky way of making future gift-giving easier for himself, since all he has to do now is ask us which DVD's we don't have yet!!! ;^)

Best non-material gift: friendships old and new. I have a friend who used to be my neighbor in another apartment complex, where we left neighborly presents on each other's doorstep, and we still keep up the tradition, though now it means he has to sneak into my new building's hallway to do it. I also have friends who hold open houses each Christmas where food and singing are shared; I felt too ill (with a cold) to attend this year, but it's still nice to be invited! And, of course, the Secret Santa exchange here at Mudcat has been a great way to share in everyone's joy at meeting new people and deepening old friendships.

There are some truly poignant stories here: Morticia's, and Mudlark's, and Bert's..... Thanks, guys, for sharing them with us. Here's hoping for better times for Christmas Yet to Come.

And congratulations to Gloredhel for the college acceptance and the scholarship! Capri's right: you earned 'em. Enjoy!

Sharon

P.S. – Now, where's the thread about the not-so-good parts of Christmas? I've got a thing or two I could post to that!

My favorite this year was the five volume set of video tapes from the Country's Family Reunion, Gospel. Last year I got the original four volume set of Country's Family Reunion. Sadly there are two members of the cast now departed, Grandpa Jones and Justin Tubb. On this latest set Johnny Russel is now gone as well.

My best present was having my daughter, still fighting back from a brain aneurism and making great progress, to stay for five days. She brought along her boyfriend, who is a super guy. We had a great time.

Second best was several hundred $$ for my National Steel fund. I'm about 60 or 70 per cent there!

Having been out of work for some months I was dreading this Christmas because we couldn't buy presents for anyone.

'round the Christmas tree, daughter Rachael was playing Santa Claus and handing out the presents.

Turns out that she has bought and wrapped presents for everyone and labelled them from us, and I can't bloody see to write any more 'cos there's tears streaming down my face.

I'm off to a Santa Swap; our WORST gifts were requested, but I didn't get any "worsts" this year (really), so I'm taking the rest of the gingerbread I baked (thus I won't be tempted to finish it off!). I do think the worst gift I ever got was a rolicking awful case of the flu about three or four years ago!

I was very impressed with my 13-year-old son getting me the Best Air-Guitar Album in the World CD... he must have been watching.

I was not, however, impressed with the Yuletide timing of my last Significant Other telling me she'd got married again.

In such circumstances, is it still the done thing to join the Foreign Legion? Or have they disbanded it?

If so, I guess I might just as well practise my Air Guitar, instead!!!

Happy Yules, all. - Ian B

Or seeing Tom's joy at getting a pristine copy of Doerflinger from me to add to our sea music reference book collection! (Now all we need is vol. 2 of Terry.)

Actually, I think I got the best present today -- a steady part time job (that means steady income!!!) starting the 7th of January.

Well it might have been the hardback copy of Folk and Blues, The Encyclopedia, with it's wonderful bios of all the great artists we love to talk about here,(and some we don't), or the Vanguard CD of Mississippi John Hurt, or the nice Irish tam my mother-in-law had sent from Ireland, but I was given a much better gift on Christmas night. My sister was passing out some candy from a box, and her husband took a few pieces. Next thing, he was on his feet and turning purple and gasping for air, choking. I got up and had my arms around his waist from behind to administer the Heimlich Manuever, and I was scared because he is a big guy with some girth to him and I wasn't sure I could push hard enough to dislodge it. Luckily, before I squeezed him, he managed to free it up himself and was fine in a minute or two.
Minute to minute, we just never know do we?

Dear Morticia...

Congrats for getting thru the first Christmas...me too. For the first time in 40 years I did not put up a tree, or any decorations, and managed to sort of blindly make my way thru the day. I did sell a no longer used 55-gal. drum wood stove on the 24th and plan to spend the entire $50 on music and am looking forward to that. Best present...1)it's over, 2) a copy of Wind in the Willows from a friend in England with wonderful illustrations. It's my favorite feel-good book....

Morticia - I'm glad you got through it. I'm gussing that the first holiday is the toughest. It was for us. On the other hand we had a great time watching our one year old trying to figure out how to open his presents. Holidays have a new special flavor with a little one around. Even if he is teething.

NOW what I want for Christmas is time to listen to my Harry Smith Anthology of American Folk Music.

We got a George Foreman grill. It was sort of funny, because I wanted one, but Mister said he didn't, so I never said anything to my Mom about it. But she got us one anyway! I cooked the breakfast sausage on it yesterday morning and it was GREAT. No grease. I can't wait to try some other things on it.

I also won the lottery. My brother gave me some lottery tickets, and I won a grand jackpot of ... $1.

One of my very favorite things this year, though, was my Secret Santa gift. I have enjoyed the hell out of the cookbook and CD!

my 13 year old nephew got me a "goddess energy" candle...he is kinda interested in all the pagan stuff and asked me to get him a tarot deck for his birthday this year...I think it tickled him to get me something he thought I'd "use" in a magical way...

My siblings always seem to have a "theme" each year for my gifts; last year it was any sort of decorative "Celtic" item and this year the theme seemed to be aromatherapy (candles, lotions, etc.)

I got to see some old high school chums last night for the first time in ten years! We laughed into the wee hours over drinks at a friend's house. One of them (an old boyfriend actually) offered me a ride back to Vermont (I am en route back to Boston)so we can catch up some more...

Happy holidays all! Can't wait for the New Year's resolutions thread!

No one committed any traffic violations or crimes on my beat. Everyone I met said "Merry Christmas". Ever since Sept. 11, people have been kind to us cops, and it may wear off next year, but it made having to work on Christmas enjoyable. As for tangible presents, I got a book of everything you want to know about the Avengers TV show, a boxed set of Abbot and Costello videos, the Oh,Brother soundtrack, a New England Patriots cap - because my brother is a Patriots fan and doesn't understand why I'm a Steelers fan - and a big bag of California pistachios. Since you can't get Iranian pistachios anymore, if anyone knows a Californian pistachio grower, tell him/her I said "Thanks for rescuing God's most perfect nut from oblivion".

...but there's still New Year's Eve to contend with. After that maybe I'll breathe easy.

Just got back from a great, but grueling trip up to the big city to visit my mother, (and other relatives). I am not used to the city: tripped over a speed bump.

But this is the first in many years that I have been able to spend Both Thanksgiving and Christmas with my family. This has been a long time goal. While working as a nurse, I have always had to work one or both of the holidays, so I haven't gotten up to see my Mom but maybe five major holidays in the last ten years.

So that's MY best christmas present, and it was to myself and to my Mom. The whole thing was very re-invigorating to my immediate family as well. The city stuff, like the Christmas lights at the Denver Zoo really does wonders at times for the kids.

I hope this isn't all too fucking sappy, but it's the only account of my Christmas you're likely to get. Thanks, BlueJay

I had my mother here, all of our friends playing music and laughing and loving...that was the very bestest prezzie. 'o course, the digi camera was pretty snazzy too. And himself was pretty enchanted with the minidisc recorder, too.

I agree...just the way the holidays are passing for me makes it one of the best...I got a gorgeous goddauther in North Idaho....I got lots of family...though most of them are up north...there is a wonderful woman who loves me...still trying to figure out why...I got some wonderful things too...like an optical mouse...and a skip doctor...but those don't amount to beans next to the things i have that really matter....this year is so much different from last year...as a year ago today I had my heart broken...today it has been sewn back together...

well, my wife & son got me some neat beers...and my son HID them...individually...all over the house!,,*grin*...I think I've found all but two.

And I got a book that is JUST my thing...The Encyclopedia of Bad Taste....a survey of those thing in our culture that you love to hate! You want the history of Hummelware? or smiley faces?..or Nehru jackets?...and a whole page and a half devoted to "perky nuns"..*giggle* ...hours of bathroom reading!

but I also have enjoyed watching my kid doggedly figuring out how to install his new CDRW burner BY HIMSELF!..he got it running, too,.....only had to open the PC case 5-6 times!.....

oh...and I got a cup warmer so I can sit with my coffee in the morning and read Mudcat without having to re-heat in the microwave every 5 minutes! A boon to mankind!

Got me a new MiniDisc recorder and I just love what it does to my recordings -- clean, no background buzz, nice balance on the mike between voice and instrument -- a gem!! Now if I can get them recordings to upload somewhere useful -- it does patch into audi on so we'll see how good it comes out....

It was a wonderful Xmas all around. BBW got her childhood accordion back and the look on her face is worth keeping for all time!!

And her mother fell in love with a really dumb santa doll that sings Jingle Bell Rock every time you punch it. We head it about 94 times!! LOL... And no-one complained!! THAT's how merry it was.

Yea, well, spaw, I got 4 Tee shirts and a candle. I'll bet Ghillie the Corgi had almost as much fun opening presents as Tris did. He helped everybody. Was almost as much fun as a 2 yr old. (Well, that gift list doesn't include my Secret Santa stuff from Allan--that was neat stuff!)

Best? Easy.......The look on Michael's face when he said it was a perfect Christmas...meaning of course that he got everything on his list. The gleeful yelp when Tristan found his Scooby Doo pajamas. The glistening, slightly wet look in Karen's eyes when happiness becomes tears. Any or all of the above..........

On the other hand, I got a new razor.

Spaw

My bestest Prezzie is reading about how happy all of your Christmases have been this year... It's like I get to play in all of your houses, at once!

Thanks, Gang!

Hmmmm.....tough one, that. I'd have to say that the nicest thing about this Christmas is that, even with the inevitable craziness & stress attendant upon the season, the fact the holiday itself passed in a really nice fashion was the best present for me: no family battles, no major explosions or meltdowns, everyone reasonably pleasant & cordial, and the children so happy & content with their loot that we lay in bed till 10am (!!!) this morning!

(I like the pearl earrings, too!)

I've spent the last two evenings playing with my new toy!..for Christmas my son, Mike bought me a scanner and I've been repairing and restoring old photographs and, in the process, recalling lots of happy memories...so come on ...what was your favourite Christmas present?
