Subject: New Year's Eve--What Songs to Sing? From: GUEST,Argenine Date: 27 Dec 01 - 03:55 AM Besides Auld Lang Syne, Deck The Hall (which tradtionally was a Solstice/New Year's carol), and What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?, what are some appropriate songs for New Year's Eve parties? (I even throw in Bashana Haba'a, because it is about what good things will happen "in the coming year.") Any suggestions Arge |

Subject: RE: Help: New Year's Eve--What Songs to Sing? From: GUEST,Sonja Date: 27 Dec 01 - 09:58 PM I don't know too many New Year's songs, but it's COLD where I live in January, so a lot of winter songs (e.g., Let It Snow or Sleighride) would still work, even though a lot of people associate them (unnecessarily) with Christmas. I once found a song about a cowboy's New Year's Eve party, but I can't find my sheet music and I don't even quite remember the name of the song. Any ideas, anyone? Sonja |

Subject: RE: Help: New Year's Eve--What Songs to Sing? At our party, which involves lots of singers and musicians, we play and sing just about anything, carols are permitted to be sung until twelfth night, you know, and there are some nallicking good tunes harmonies and whaterver to be found there! Have a goos new year celebration whatever you end up singing! Cheers, Lucy |

Subject: RE: Help: New Year's Eve--What Songs to Sing? From: GUEST,Arjay Date: 28 Dec 01 - 04:25 PM Dan Fogelberg has a song called "Another Auld Lang Syne" which would fit, but it's not really a party song. Arjay |

Subject: RE: Help: New Year's Eve--What Songs to Sing? From: BH Date: 29 Dec 01 - 06:44 PM I am partial to two pieces that are not truly New Year's songs: Old Devil Time and This Train Still Runs. Bill Hahn |
Subject: RE: Help: New Year's Eve--What Songs to Sing? From: GUEST Date: 29 Dec 01 - 09:29 PM I saw Holly Near and Ronnie Gilbert perform "This Train Still Runs" in some church in NYC, St Stephen and St Mark, maybe in September of '96. It's a Janis Ian and Jess Leary song resonate with a theme of life and living, as good a message for the New Year as any to me. And Old Devil Time, well we are marking time with each passing year. Subject: RE: Help: New Year's Eve--What Songs to Sing? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 31 Dec 01 - 05:23 AM The version of "The Tailors' Britches" that Derek and Dorothy Elliot do on their fine Yorkshire Relish album mentions that the tailor was at a dance on New Years evening. There is a version here in the DT but no mention of New Year in that one:-( Cheers Dave the Gnome |
Subject: RE: Help: New Year's Eve--What Songs to Sing? From: Genie Date: 30 Dec 02 - 09:41 PM CapriUni's new Solstice carol, "Raise All Your Voice" is a good one for the Roman calendar new year's, too. I don't have the link handy, but type "solstice" in the filter and search the last 90 days and you'll find it. Also, IIRC, Jeri posted a new New Year's song last December and the thread was refreshed recently. Genie It's also a good time for "circle" songs, like "The Circle Game" [Mitchell], "Circle" [Chapin], "Turn, Turn, Turn" [Seeger] and reminiscing songs like "In My Life" [Lennon-McCartney]. |
Subject: RE: Help: New Year's Eve--What Songs to Sing? From: Haruo Date: 30 Dec 02 - 11:13 PM I was going to suggest "The old year now away has fled" (I prefer "is fled") but GUEST beat me to it. However, she didn't mention the tune, which is Greensleeves, one of the finest older English melodies. More verses. As for Nos Galan words, I rather like the "All ye mountains praise the Lord" version in the old Oxford Book of Carols, not sure if it's got a Cymraeg substrate. Haruo |
Subject: RE: Help: New Year's Eve--What Songs to Sing? From: pattyClink Date: 31 Dec 02 - 04:18 PM there was an old tradition on the stock market (hear me out!) that started the year of the great crash of '29, of floor traders singing 'Wait til the Sun Shines, Nellie' at the closing bell on New Year's or Christmas eve, I don't remember which. It's very poignant for people who've had a lousy year. |
Subject: RE: Help: New Year's Eve--What Songs to Sing? From: Genie Date: 31 Dec 04 - 02:26 PM Seems Capri Uni's done it again. Another great New Year's/Solstice song. Good on ya, Ann! Genie |
Subject: RE: Help: New Year's Eve--What Songs to Sing? From: Charley Noble Date: 31 Dec 04 - 02:43 PM I'll probably give Si Kahn's "New year's Song" another run at Sinsull's party this evening: For can't you tell, by the ringing bell, This old year's moving on... Cheerily, Charley Noble |
