The lyrics that GUEST.Pam posted on 08 Dec 2012 are exactly the lyrics that I remember as well. From way back, probably from the late 1950s. The score that it goes with is "The march of the three kings" by Bizet. Youtube has lots of versions of that, many instrumental and many with vocals. But no two of the versions with vocals have the same vocals.

"Marcho di Rei" is in Provençal, to be exact. The standard French version is "Marche de Rois," "translated" by J.F. Domergue (1759). It was also known as M'sieu d'Turenne. The song in French is performed by Le Lyçée Français de Los Angeles Children's Choir HERE. On Bizet's Farandole, CLICK HERE, and HERE (first page of the orchestra score).

Thank you very much, Masato. These are new verses, of course, but they fit the melody and I can and will use them.

I believe I will start a tradition of having a session every January 1st, because we have the day off, but what is there to do? My crowd doesn't party much on New Year's Eve, so nobody has a hangover. We don't watch football. So why not make music?

Merci, but I need it in English. I plan to teach my friends the words so that they can hear the timing, and I can't sing them the French.

This song is more complicated than tha average jig or reel. It has sixteenth rests and tied notes in bizarre combinations. However, once we can sing the words, it will come smoothly. I hope.

I'm pretty sure that the book we learned this from back in the late 1950's was widely distributed, and perhaps someone reading this will have sung these words too.

I'm trying to recall all the words for a song I learned in school about the three kings. It was set to a tune which I now know is 13th C Provencal, and it went:

Late at night, upon a great highway
I saw three kings of the East come riding.
In the sky there shone a bright array
to guide these kings upon their eager way.
While noble courtiers went on before
ta tum tum tum tum etc
dispelling dangers that hovered near.

If anybody knows the missing lines or any other verses, I would like to have them by January 1 for our jam.

I have tried Google and the Digitrad with no results.
