Hmmmmm, hard to abbreviate "New Year's Resolutions".

We ALL want to make promises about "self-improvement" that we're not really able to monitor accurately a year later, but one thing we can check easily is did we acquire something that we REALLY wanted? So for once I'll set aside my non-materialistic wimpy liberal-Canuck leanings and try to make Dubya happy by gettin out there and BUYIN' something!

OK, for me in the New Year it'll be:

A new turntable. Mine's on it's last legs.
A new CD player. The only one in the house that works is in a clock radio.
The Harry Smith Collection on CD (I've tried to get a free radio copy but no dice)
A table saw
One of those digital guages to measure strings widths
One new pair of black jeans, three or four sweatshirts, socks and underwear, and a tie for special occasions (oops, and a new shirt to put the tie around)

That's it. Boy it really DOESN'T take much to keep me happy! We'll see in a year if I followed through.

Any other takers?

Rick

And here I thought you were talking about New York Residents buying stuff! **BG**

I'd like to buy another dulcimer, a bass, this time.

Two new sets of sheets for our bed.

New dog bed - his is so grubby and yucky!

New digital camera.

And, the biggie...a home of our own. Whew! Hope I don't regret this!

I suppose I should refrain from resolving to not buy any more musical instruments, for I fear that at the first mention by the Chiff & Fipple of a new whistle, I'll be burning up the e-commerce wires! Not to mention someone on ebay might have the (insert name of instrument or musical doodad here) I have been waiting for my whole life! And if Ron Popiel knocks on my door selling his genuine Ronco Mega Guitarwhistlebodhranpianosousaphoneonewomanband with automatic built-in tuner complete with the entire Mel Bay series of easy to learn German Polkas , I'm toast.

I want to buy either a stratocaster or a mandolin.

Airline tickets to several places/friends I want to visit.

More CDs than I should. Oh, and apparently, a new CD player, since mine seems to be in the throes of transition from this life to the next, in which it will come back as an electric can-opener in Saska-Tune.

Maybe some small glasses, since I presently am drinking my red wine and my orange juice out of jelly jars. This makes me feel a little derelict.

Other than that, nothing much. Things aren't my thing, and are getting less so as time wears on.

I'm not sure about someone who makes New Years resolutions not to buy any socks or underwear, Rick.

I will probably end up with another guitar.

Mnf...Long list.
New MIDI controller keyboard.
Band in a Box.
A nice acoustic electric, with a MIDI guitar controller to accompany it.
All the whistles I want.
Atleast 300 dollars worth of books.
And some pants... I'm down to three wearable pairs. =P

We're currently shopping for another cat.. We wanna get a little ball of mewling fur, to keep our current fuzzy futon tumour company...

Other than that, I'm itching for a serious computer upgrade... this poor old p200 is SOOO obsolete that I can't even hook up my new keyboard properly... The St. Pats week win fall might be going to the new computer...

One other thing... I really wanna lay my hands on a 6 gig Nomad mp3 player... partially for playing music, but also to use as a home and gig recorder... Especially when the new computer with cd burner lands...

But the car needs work (and maybe replacing) so I expect more likely these 2 things will get "back burnered" yet again this year...

So I'll settle for buying that winning 649 ticket!

:-)

1. A fence for my house - at the moment the whole neighbourhood seems to think it is public land and the bolder/younger ones actually use it as a shortcut. The rest of them just seem to like looking into my yard all the time and I just want a nice, peaceful, pleasant spot to retreat from the world now and then. I have to admit, I don't blame them for looking in - with all the trees etc it does look inviting.

2. A digital camera

3. Some CD's because I've been skint for the majority of this year and CD's have been right on the end of the list alongside books - which are also on the list.

4. I don't want to buy any more instruments - I just want to buy some music lessons so that I can play the ones I have.

Helen

I am committed to buying nothing until after I move. Have too much to pack as it is. Then I will start with the basics - soap, tissues, trash can liners, etc. Then, when the mortgage and credit cards are paid off...who knows?

* a digital camera...the yuppie toy of the decade * a couple of Kirka CDs (Balkan acapella; great stuff) * an operating system for my PC that doesn't blue-out every few hours...the new Dell came with Windows ME and I supposedly have an XP upgrade coming. * whatever hard/software I need to connect my turntable to my PC so I can begin putting my old vinyl on CDs. * I wouldn't turn down peace on earth and goodwill toward men.

Oh, if I could but afford it.... a Schilke Piccolo trumpet (P5-4) with a cornet shank, and a Bach 7E cornet mouthpiece. I wish Maybe I could settle for a new mouthpiece for my trumpet (anyone have a Bach 1 1/2 C they want to get rid of? Anyone?) =0)

Inflatable pillows. Picture a steamer trunk compression-stufffed full of pillows that I need whenever I sleep away from home, and me not able to carry it for myself, even in a cloth softrunk. Today I finally found the inflatables, good ones, I think, and so cheap!!! Now I can go wherever I want to go, whenever I want.

And felt for chord bars.

Barky me Lass......Go rent some recordings done by Stan Kenton in the early 70's and have a listen to his lead trumpet player....check to be sure it's a guy named John Harner. He has phenomenal range with this huge sound and more power than I think you will ever hear. Kenton always had a great lead player and said that this guy was the best he had ever had with him in all the years the band had existed. He had "screech" range with POWER! No thin little sound that most screech player get....I'm talking the same power at triple C that he had at C and the same kind of sound, very full, very edgy at the same time. He played a monstrous bore Benge which makes it all the more impressive. Give him a listen if you get a chance. John also played Vegas house bands for about 7 years and the cat had chops going into next year!! He played the Telethon...all 24 hours...5 years in a row.

Anyway, try to talk the Old Man into the Piccolo for the hell of it anyway......

Absolutely no more than I have to. It's just "Stuff" and I have too much stuff the way it is. Will probably spend a lot of money for Dr. bills---did last year. At least the Drs. are financially healthy.

The Insurance has changed the Co Pay from 20% to 30% without notifying us. It will probably get worse this year.

I know I am a cynic--you don't have to tell me that. At least we can still pay the mortgage and the utility bills. 8 F/-14C outside--75f/28C inside thanks to the fireplace.

(I'm just cranky because I had a lousy bunch of holidays--starting with New Years last year. Don't mind me too much.)

Welllll...... I'd resolved NOT to buy any more STUFF until I cleaned up my apartment and created places to put the stuff that's already threatening to bury me alive. Of course, I broke that resolution on New Year's DAY itself with the purchase of five MORE paperback books, on-sale Christmas cards, yet another page-a-day calendar with cats on it, and a Christmas-cat cookie jar that caught my eye when I was returning a present.

*sigh* So now I really, really MUST stop buying STUFF unless it's additional shelving or some other organizational aid (how boring!). But if I'm good this year and I accomplish my goal, I will have created the space to put the dream instrument I can then (and only then) purchase: a hammer dulcimer.

Well, in fantasy mode I'd like CD's of most of the folky and old timey stuff I've wanted to hear for years. Plus, I'd like to get some home recording gear, but haven't a clue as to what that might entail.

Rick (this is the reason my nom de plume is "guest"), I too lusted after the Harry Smith anthology, and just couldn't take the $90 price tag. So, I ordered the CD's on inter-library loan and had a friend "burn" it to CD's for about $20 !

I predict I'll buy a Dremel yesterday.
Mind you, this is Fielding's fault as well as the guitar I bought last year and the one I want to buy this year. If he hadn't gone on about it (see this thread), I'd be fine.

Here ya' go on this thread and a couple of others buying instruments and books and even tools......And not one of you is going for that stuff that Bill Monroe's son is selling!!! Good lord, what's a guitar or a freakin' Dremel when you can have Bill's pie plate or dented pie pan? Check it out.....You missed the tie, but that shirt looks mighty tempting.....Probably got some Monroe sweat still in the pits..........
