Yes it's me again! I have returned to the well of lyrics for a County Mayo song called "Black Sod Bay". A tin whistle player from Boston's Green Briar Pub would like this one.(just wants the LYRICS or maybe tune also?) Thanks Bill

BLACK SOD BAY is on a CD called "My Home in the West" by Kevin Prendergast;
Also "Whiskey, Lies & Tears" by Theresa Rodgers.

By the way, Google gave me many more hits (449) on "Blacksod Bay" but most of those are references to the actual bay, not the song. We might have more success if you gave us a line or at least a phrase from the song lyrics, in addition to the title.

OK Jim, OK Frank here are some words from BLACK SOD BAY which I extracted from Irish singers at the Green Briar in Boston:

"It was Boston City that gave me birth many years ago. My forebearers came from Ireland from Erris? and Mayo."

Thanks for any help, Bill

I see listing of several more recordings - but no sign of a set of lyrics. "Blacksod" is indeed one word - and "Erris" makes sense - a placename in Mayo.

Regards

I too had no luck. Bill, if the lyrics you gave us are accurate, and if Google can't find them on the Internet, then they're probably not out there, and giving us more lyrics probably won't help.

Additional lyrics are helpful when you want to narrow your search, such as when I got the 400+ hits on "Blacksod Bay."

On the other hand, posting more lyrics might just help by refreshing the thread, so more people will notice it.

These are the lyrics to Blacksod Bay as best as I have been able to gather from a local band here in Western Massachusetts. One part I am uncertain about is "Solyen"-- I have written this phonetically. I am sure that is not the proper spelling.

BLACKSOD BAY

It was Boston city gave me birth so many years ago
My forbears came from Ireland, from Erris in Mayo
The place they boarded ship to leave I often heard them say
It was lovely Solyen harbor at the sight of Blacksod Bay

And now that I have come once more to dear old Erin's shore
To view ancestral homestead in the parish of Kilmore
To see myself the place they left upon that summers day
And lovely Solyen harbor at the sight of Blacksod Bay

I landed down in Bingham's town where I met people grand
I told them what had brought me back to dear old Ireland
They showed me where my people lived before they went away
Near lovely Solyen harbor at the sight of Blacksod Bay

I stood enchanted by the scenes that soon did reach my eyes
This lovely land my people left when they were forced to fly
The fields so green, the skies so blue upon that summers day
And lovely Solyen harbor at the sight of Blacksod Bay

I'm going back to Boston town, but not there to reside
I'll take my wife and family across the ocean wide
The evening of my life I'll spend when I come back to stay
Near lovely Solyen harbor at the sight of Blacksod Bay
Near lovely Solyen harbor at the sight of Blacksod Bay

Never fails, eh, Mario? I love this place. I would love to hear a MIDI to the tune. How about some attribution? Author? When it was written?

Blacksod Bay comes up between the Mullet Peninsula and the mainland. About halfway up, there is a place called Saleen Harbo(u)r. It is just south of Bingham's Town, which is also called An Geata Mór on must maps. My grandmother (her name was Honora Heavern, one of a half-dozen spellings) and she was born in Fallmore, at the southern tip of the peninsula.

Maire-aine

Thanks for that - Solyen had me puzzled! I reckon the last line is probably "at the SIDE of Blacksod Bay", also.

I just recently learned this song from Connie (Donegal singer I hear at the ICC and the Greenbriar). The tune is in two sections: A-B-B-A But the B section seems to be very close if not identical to the B section of "The Rocks of Bawn". Just a curiousity, or are they related?
Gregor

We were on a bus this evening, singing this song and I came online to find the words. How wonderful the web is. I live in Binghamstown and am married to one of the sons of the last Binghams of Erris.

Just saw the lyrics above. Phonetically they were close. The harbour is called Saleen and its near the village of Binghamstown. John Cuffe, originally from Blacksod

The correct spelling is Sailín Harbour pronounced 'Sawleen' meaning 'little sea harbour' hope this info is of benefit.

The following link has lyrics that differ very slightly from those poeted earlier by Seamus. The song is also done in English with no accompaniment. Please note that the song a singing are in the very last post on the page that opens.
