ER.... I'd like to point out that the firearm was a legally held weapon, certified and all, the owner has all the licences and gun club memberships, I wore suitable protection (a WWI tin hat to be precise) and we were firing blue blanks on his own property........... names have been changed to protect the innocent. I would never discharge a weapon at any other time, and certainly never when loaded with live red ammo....

But it was fun, I've never played with a pump action before!!!

Doug--Just makes for all of the more folks to have guns in this macho state, and in such a way that others aren't aware of it until it is perhaps too late. The "class" they must take in order to get the concealed license is minimal. Anything that puts more guns in more people's hands to me is a negative. Since the new year I've heard of seven gunshot deaths in Dallas. It is thread creep to head into the pros/cons of gun ownership. It's also thread creep to complain more about the pResident who was appointed by the Supremes last January. Life's like that; edges blur.

Firearms are legal in Arizona, but firing them senselessly into the air is not. Too many people have been killed or injured from falling bullets.

At the risk of thread creep, Stilly, I fail to see what the concealed firearms legislation in Texas (whether GWB was governor or not) has to do with people firing firearms into the air. I suspect that has been going on since idiots who would do that started owning firearms.

Firearms are what I was referring to in my first post. Fireworks are illegal in Tarrant County (Texas) and firearms are legal. Though they're not supposed to be discharged in such a way, the local Good Ol' Boys still shoot them off. I believe it was on Dubya's watch as Gov that the concealed firearm law passed. Every year we usually hear about someone shot through a wall or roof (falling bullets are dangerous also) accidentally at the New Year (this is in contrast to gang-style shootings when people are shot through walls on purpose--often small children who stood up in their cribs to see what the noise was). Another reason for wanting to move out of Texas. . . m

Please don't get me wrong. I totally agree with Banj and Nutty about the fireworks and dogs thing, too, it's just that our dog doesn't mind them, as long as he is with us. Neighbours setting off firearms is another story, though. he and I both dove for cover when we heard that last year.

I'm with Banjer & Nutty on the fireworks issue. The whole thing is totally out of control now; every year the 'fireworks season' grows longer and louder. Since October, I don't think there's been a night when you wouldn't hear some going of in the town. Now there seems to be more shops springing up with the sole purpose of selling oversize fireworks all year round. It seems that people have been persuaded that if they're having a birthday, wedding, anniversary etc, the party won't be complete without fireworks. Indeed, less considerate folk seem to positively enjoy annoying those for miles around with enormous explosions at all hours of the night; they seemingly cannot be penalised for so doing.

I'd be very happy to see all firework sales banned. There are plenty of organised displays, and the noise nuisance caused year round to the many now far exceeds the pleasure they might bring to a few.

Well I didn't think I'd get so many comments about the "stroke" of midnight which is why I carefully worded my original post :) Suffice it to say that being with the one you love at that moment is the ultimate way to ring out the old and bring in the new - give it a try next year!

boy thats some good stories about midnite, mine was that we just went to sleep, and woke today for a busy cold day, we did manage to get in a couple hours of playing last night, but banging would of been nice to. BOB

Oh it's a fine tradition alright LOL Been doing that for 22 years now - last night we stayed home but on the occasion when we have been invited somewhere it's always interesting to see how we'll be able to "pull it off" so to speak. Half the evening is spent in search of a good "midnight tryst" setting! Happy New Year to all.

I plead guilty to "Mudcatting," and at midnight here in Texas I listened to the gunshots go off, hoping none would come through walls or windows. It sounded a bit reserved this year--that's good. One child stayed over with friends after a night of watching movie videos, the other stayed at his Dad's house with a case of the flu, poor kid. He wanted to be with his sister. They were both hoping for snow today, but none arrived.

Interesting, I too watched "Moulin Rouge" with my s.o. and then just after midnight, headed downstairs and hung out here (Mudcat) for a while, and then got into a guitar jam with myself till about 3:30 am. When I finished I couldn't believe how late it was, as tend to lose all track of time when these things happen. A nice quiet, laid back evening.

I was Mudcatting, while Rog was out in the living room, but just at that stroke of Wyoming time Midnight, we went out on the front porch with the dog, who thankfully doesn't mind fireworks, looked for the moon and what was suppposed to be a showy night for Jupiter and saw only clouds with a bit of the bright, just-past-full moon shining through. Just an inch of two of new fallen snow kept things muffled, hushed, so that even the few fireworks seemed a benign and fleeting salute to the new baby year. It was beautiful. We stayed up another hour or two, just being together, Mudcatting, reading, and watching a little television. Nice night.

Quiet evening with the SO--a lovely spaghetti dinner, nice wine, and Moulin Rouge (appropriate for the occassion we thot) on the DVD player. A call from our 17 yr old baby at midnite, when we rushed outside to watch the frosty fireworks from downtown in spirit together with her (she was partying at a downtown hotel with friends).

For me, the last half of 2001 was a lot less difficult than the first half, for which I am deeply grateful, and I look forward to 2002 which is looking pretty good from here for us.

I had dinner at the house of friends (Bat Goddess and Curmudgeon) and came home at about 9PM because I was tired. Durned if I didn't stay up until about 3:30 AM because I was having too much fun playing guitar and Mudcatting. Midnight passed without me noticing.

I also had one of those migraines that reached the severity I only experience once every 2 or 3 years. Probably just a backlash from sleep cycle screw-up, and I couldn't have slept anyway.

Celebrating with some friends - four other couples. Played some tunes, sang some of the old songs and made sure all the Yanks there knew about "first foot" and had appropriate goodies - then consumed mass quantities of them. Relations of the hosts of the party called from Glasgow about 7:30 PM - 5 hours ahead of us - absolutely smashed. Wished us all a Happy New Year, and then said they were falling behind in the drinking -

I'm functioning now, as is the lovely lady wife - don't know about the hostess. She had a VERY good time. I think she finally realized why we threw parties on New Years at OUR house.... no driving afterward!

Happy New Year, all. As my band's newsletter wished for all musicians, dancers and other performers, "May the coming year find you booked in only good gigs and no lame ones."

I woke up about 5 minutes before the ball dropped in Times Square. I turned on the TV to watch that, and like Nutty, wanted to stick the products they sell up the collective asses of all the fireworks folk becuse my dogs were going out of their minds, called my mother right at the stroke of midnight as I have done every year since I left home, and then went back to bed with two scared dogs right next to me.

I don't mean to restrict the rights of others having fun with fireworks, but when they wake me up in the middle of the night for no good reason it gets old. I have one neighbor who obviously has more money than good sense or regard for his neighbors. He blows these blasted things off all times of year, holiday or special event or not and the debris often lands on my roof or in my yard which is not a good idea during some of the extreme droughts we have been through. We (other neighbors and I) have talked to him repeatedly trying to get him to be a little more considerate to no avail. I wish no one any harm, but if one of these bags of his fireworks were to blow up on him I would not shed a tear.

I was trying to comfort my dog, who is petrified of fireworks, as they continued into the small hours. Just as they finished in one place they started up in another.
After about 3 hours of it (it was 2.30am when they finished) my friendly feelings towards my fellow man had completely disappeared and I would have happily strangled all the fireworks manufacturers/sellers in the world.
