I rented "Almost Famous". I enjoyed it. I wonder how much of it is autobiographical.

Velvet Goldmine was somewhat about the whole David Bowie/Lou Reed/Iggy Pop phenom. A really good movie, but Hedwig and The Angry Inch was more fun, and I thought the music was better. See 'em both as a double feature.

I loved Almost Famous, and anyone who likes the rock'n'roll genre movie should definately see Rock'n'Roll High School with the Ramones.

I liked Almost Famous. I saw it... I think 5 times when it was in theaters.

But it's no Phallus in Wonderland, GWAR's first movie. And they're a REAL band. >:)

Peg, was Velvet Goldmine on Lou Reed? Did it get to the Rock N Roll Animal phase?

I just got Woodstock on DVD - it's the "directors" cut - they've added about 40 minutes of more stuff - mostly good music - bringing the time to 3:40. It's terrific.

I love almost famous too, though the Penny Lane love interest was hard to enjoy - but that's a personal thing.

Spinal Tap is classic as is Gimme Shelter and The Commitments. For traditional Celtic DVD/video - I must recommend the Chieftains' "Water From The Well" which is pretty easy to find for sale.

pax yall.

I'd like to have Mad Dogs & Englishmen, The Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert, High Fidelity in my collection along with Spinal Tap & the Commitments. Maybe even Woodstock.

Time for a new thread?

Clint, you don't have a copy of the Rolling Stone's "Gimme Shelter" covering the '69 tour ending at Altamont? That's a must have!

Clinton,

I'll have to give it a watch. However, I think the next one I'll see is "Almost Famous".

Rock and Rule is a really cool cartoon about Moc... this David Bowie/Mick Jagger lookin' guy (his songs are voiced by Loo (sp?) Reed) who's trying to raise a demon with music... The perfect voice comes from a girl in a small town band... (voiced by Debra Harrie)

It's cheesy, and love conquers all in the end, but I like it a lot!

Tell me more about Rock & Rule, I've never heard of it.

I love that movie...

Also, if ya check out the end credits you'll read that "Penny Lane" is also based on a real character...

It's stuck in my head for some readon, that movie.. I intend to own it and keep it on the shelf beside Spinal Tap, The Commitments and Rock and Rule...

;-)

Yeah, I liked the movie, and they've released it on DVD now with a CD of seven or eight songs by the fictional group.

From IMDB.COM...

The film is director Cameron Crowe's semi-autobiographical account of life as a young Rolling Stone reporter. The actual group that Crowe first toured with was The Allman Brothers. (Gregg Allman was the one who distrusted him and kept asking if he was a narc.) Crowe's real-life near-fatal plane crash happened while traveling with The Who. The character of Russell Hammond charcater is based on Glenn Frey of The Eagles.
and
Later, we see a black-and-white photo of the fictional band Stillwater that echoes the Allman Brothers' famous Live at the Fillmore East album cover.

While there was a band named Stillwater in the 70's, the band in the movie was not supposed to be them.

A friend of mine saw the movie "Almost Famous". He was asking me if the band Stillwater who are portrayed in it are a real band and if so was there role historically accurate? I was quite into the Rock of that era and I think I recall having heard of them, but I can't be sure.

Thanks in advance.

Steve
