Subject: RE: Help: The Philharmonious Jug Band From: GUEST,Jan Newton (nee Long!!) Date: 25 Nov 11 - 04:53 AM I have a copy of the album too,(still playable, although I'd dearly love a CD!) and I remember the whole scene very clearly!!! In fact, I am re-living it at this very moment, since the founder of our local regular folk club at that time (mid-60s), has put up a website - he'd be glad to have your memories, photos, etc! http://www.thetrapdoorfolkclub.co.uk/ I have loved jug band music since those days, and indeed I am still playing it, and again playing in folk clubs after a 40 year break, lol!!! I even (finally) have my Martin guitar, which I have wanted all my life, since seeing Doug Kyle's way back then! If any of you guys remember me and want to get in touch, I'd be thrilled to hear from you! brain.circus@yahoo.co.uk With love. |

Subject: RE: Help: The Philharmonious Jug Band From: GUEST,Pete Ballan Date: 30 Aug 10 - 08:22 AM Pete Ballan does NOT live in Yorkshire. He lives happily in Alnwick, Northumberland, involved with his wife, Veronica, making ceramic figures and still jugging and spooning away in his odd spare moment. Occasionally someone manages to contact him by devious means of the net, and can wring a copy of the old LP onto a CD. By the way, reports of his death or dying are inaccurate and baseless. He just settled down with the right woman! And he is Canadian, NOT British !!!! |
Subject: RE: Help: The Philharmonious Jug Band From: GUEST,Pete Ballan Date: 02 Jun 10 - 03:43 PM I am still alive, with a natural pulse, and still playing 'music' with a few selected friends. Living in Northumberland, not Yorkshire, in Alnwick, where Harry Potter was partially filmed. I live in glorious laughter, with a wonderful wife who makes me laugh and feel comfey in my skin. I still play the spoons, washboard, mandolin, ukelele and fiddle to keep garden pests away. My knees creak, but pain is alleviated with root growth hormones available from any good gardening centre. I have a copy of the Ffilharmonious Jug Band and a recently provided CD of same, with the sound of frying eggs in the background edited out. See, there IS recovery from being a folky, and I am a sober gentle man these days, 66 years notwithstandinghowsome-ever. Google-able and passed the censors pen. pete.ballan@tinyworld.co.uk |
Subject: RE: Help: The Philharmonious Jug Band From: GUEST,AlHaug Date: 19 Jan 10 - 09:45 AM At least one member of this band lives here in the states and has played at the Annual Battle of the Jug Bands in Minneapolis several times. By the way the spelling is "Ffilharmonious Jug Band" (with two f's). Is it spelled "Philharmonious" on the album cover? Here are excerpts from a note I got from member Jim Johnson back in 2006. The link below may be dead: The original Ffilharmonious Jug Band played out of the High Wycombe, England area from 1965 through 1969 making one LP at Pinner Studios in London. The group played the University and Folk Club scene across England through the late 60s appearing with such names as Jeremy Taylor, Johnny Silvo, Steve Simpson, and the Bonzo Dog Doo-Da Band (Please Do Not Adjust Your Set!). The band was composed of Doug Kyle (Guitar, Kazoo, harps, banjo), Pete Ballan (Washboard, spoons and all the percussion instruments), Jeff Wilson (Guitar, Mandolin, Washtub Bass, kazoo, slide whistle) and yours truly, Jim Johnson (Guitar, Banjo, Jug, kazoo, hand trumpet, Mandolin, cymbals, harps, Washtub Bass). The band disbanded in 1969 when: Pete left the UK to wander the earth in search of heaven knows what and Jeff and Jim moved home to the United States. Since then, I have played with a number of short lived jug bands in Texas, Nebraska, Kansas, Alabama, Illinois, and New York. I have also been very active with a number of bluegrass bands, have written, recorded and produced the music for an underground movie, and recently cut a CD. Currently I am the Front Street Jug Stompers in Dodge City, KS where I reside. When I say, "I am" I mean it. The band is me. I have revived the Ffilharmonious Jug Stompers for the sake of this contest and hope to pick up another couple of stray musicians to play with me at the competition. It seems to be "that sort" of an event... Wanna play jug to a few good old standards? ;-) Of the other original Ffilharmonious Jug Band members, Doug Kyle maintains no internet presence at all. He is now a builder of high quality, custom gypsy and jazz guitars (the "Kyle" guitar - used by a number of descerning jazz and gypsy guitarists across Europe) and resides in Moretonhampstead, England where he still plays guitar and/or acoustic bass with area jazz bands. Pete Ballan, lives in Yorkshire but is no longer involved with music. Jeff Wilson has moved on into obscurity. You may sample a few resent cuts of standards by the "Front Street Jug Stompers", a.k.a. "Ffilharmonious Jug Stompers" at: http://www.starrtech.net/~jimj/music/musicpage.html |
Subject: RE: Help: The Philharmonious Jug Band From: GUEST,John C Date: 18 Jan 10 - 06:06 AM Thought I was the only person who bought their LP. I still have it in my collection with the 'Incidental Notes Inside'. They performed at the Castle Folk Club in Swindon and I can still remember the great atmosphere they created. They actually looked like they were really having fun and enjoying the 'Jug Band' music. |
