To 'throw a wobbler' is a slang expression, literally meaning to have a fit (which makes you go all wobbly), but now usually just means an exaggerated and disproportionate display of displeasure.

For instance, perpetrators of "road rage" attacks are throwing a wobbler.

I'd just like to make it absolutely clear that there are so many wonderful songs/ songwriters from Teesside* that I screwed up completely in attributing a Pete Bond song (Joe Peel) to Pete Betts.

Apologies to both Petes.

Kitty

*(PS As Teesside is currently trying for reincarnation as Tees Valley (with help from Darlington)I apologise if this was too narrow a definition of the area in which wonderful songwriters are located.

Pete certainly does. I was lucky enough to hear him sing it on the Sunday night of Saltburn FF last August.

They don't write them anymore, they certainly don't, it's a "gemofasong"

A vote of thanks to Pete for writing this song.

It has given me much pleasure over the years, both listening to the Capstick recording, and later on performing it myself.

If you are still there, Pete, do you still sing it too?

Sorry Herga Kitty ,
I only found out about this site last night when I was at the Globe in Guisborough .
Unfortunately I didn't write a song Joe Peel - so a bit more investigation is required !!
Captain swing's recollection of Louth ( on the same thread ) was very kind - and to be described as "superb"- WoW !!!!

who is Jim Glover's mate? Pete I think, but not sure , a giant of a gentleman , from somewhere on the sussex coast, I heard him do it at a song session in the ship wadebridge back end of August, bloody brilliant, as were all their songs that weekend. Now I've got it in my head and its driving the family mad, well it gets me some space.
Perhaps this ought to have been a new thread.

I'm sure I posted this before - another instance of Mudcat censoring? Probably just a technical hitch! Anyway, the only - and very good - recording I know is by Arthur Johnstone, mainstay of the Glasgow Star Folk Club for decades (till it folded some years ago) and one of my favourite singers. It's on his first solo recording 'Generations of Change'.

Nutty

I woke up this morning and thought, don't be silly, it was Pete Bond - I see you got there first. Another great singer/ songwriter though....

And of course Vin Garbutt did a great recording of it, on Tossin' a Wobbler and every time he sings it he makes a point of telling people who wrote it.

"A great song written by my mate Pete Betts, about the good times that were had during his childhood in South Bank, near Middlesborough, after the pubs had closed. Those were the days before the television took over the spot where the piano used to stand and people used to sing, rather than listen to records - like yourselves."

That's what Vin wrote on the cover notes for the record. (And I love the ambiguity in that last sentence. Read it either way it's true. Typical Vin.Vin's web site: vingarbutt.com )

Sorry Kitty but I'm afraid you are mistaken. It was Peter Bond who wrote Joe Peel.

Jon

Thanks for the link to the previous thread. A pity no-one could spell Middlesbrough right - or mentioned that Pete Betts also wrote Joe Peel!

Tony Capstick did a decent recording too, on LP Tony Capstick Does a Turn. I don't know if it has ever been released on CD, but suspect not.

Sorry about the blank post above, you can tell I'm on a strange terminal.

does anybody know the lyrics to a song whose chorus includes

ee what fun we had singing for hours on end
once we found a key perfect harmony
those boozy voices would blend
heart of my heart just for a start
walking my baby back home
when it comes to an end its lets sing it again
they don't write em like that anymore
