Subject: 2002 Grammy Awards From: Ron Olesko Date: 04 Jan 02 - 03:49 PM Is folk music making a comeback? Bob Dylan and "O Brother Where Art Thou" are two of the top five nominees for album of the year! Dylan up for 3 Grammies! The traditional folk catagory: BeauSoleil - Looking Back Tomorrow John Hartford - Hamilton Ironworks Roger McGuinn - Treasures from the Folk Den various artists - Avalon Blues:A Tribute to the Music of Mississippi John Hurt various artists - Down From the Mountain Contemporary Folk Bob Dylan - Love and Theft Buddy & Julie Miller - Buddy & Julie Miller various - Poet:A Tribute to Townes Van Zandt Gillian Welch - Time Lucinda Williams - Essence I'm rooting for O'Brother Where Art Thou for album of the year, Roger McGuinn for best traditional folk, and Poet for best contemporary folk. Of course I'm not a big believer in these dog and pony shows. Big Business steps in. Still it is fun in a way. Ron |
Subject: RE: 2002 Grammy Awards From: Art Thieme Date: 04 Jan 02 - 06:08 PM Good friends Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, once again, have been nominated for a Grammy in the Best Recorded Children's Music nitch. This is their FIFTH nomination and I, for one, am sick of watching these great artists passed over. They deserved the award each other time they were in the running but maybe, now, justice will prevail ! Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: 2002 Grammy Awards From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 04 Jan 02 - 07:11 PM The awards are a crock. Quality is often overlooked for mass marketing appeal. Every year Tom Chapin gets nominated he seems to be up against Elmo, who wins it. It's not what you know it's who you know. Rumors are that Elmo's slept his way to the top!! Ron |
Subject: RE: 2002 Grammy Awards From: MAG Date: 08 Jan 02 - 12:33 AM Erg, I agree with Art that Fink and Marxer routinely get robbed; I also have to say that I liked the special anniversary album (muppets) which won in childrens. I know, I know, (but) I get crap from (other) children's musicians about this, just because I LIKE it. MAG |
Subject: RE: 2002 Grammy Awards From: Amergin Date: 08 Jan 02 - 12:52 AM think an album of john hartford's has made a nomination.... |
Subject: RE: 2002 Grammy Awards From: BH Date: 08 Jan 02 - 06:40 PM Fink & Marxer were nominated and I, too, hope they make it. But, as Ron said, commercialism rears it head and they--as Tom Chapin--will still garner they respect and the adoration of the public they reach. They will be joining me on the TRADITIONS program on WFDU in either March or early April. I look forward to it. Bill Hahn |
Subject: RE: 2002 Grammy Awards From: M.Ted Date: 09 Jan 02 - 03:36 PM Elmo is nominated again, and, as usual, the instrumental arrangements are warmed over Sesame Street, and the vocals are cartoon voices, and not real singing-but Cathy and Marcy's album with Brave Combo is really super, great music, even if you aren't a kid--hope this is the year that they win! |
Subject: RE: 2002 Grammy Awards From: gnu Date: 09 Jan 02 - 06:29 PM Yeah, awards suck... but, round here, it's the way we promote our local talent... and it works. A lot of Folk and Trad wouldn't get the time of day round here if it weren't for the ECMA's... East Coast Music Awards. Not quite as drammy as the grammy's, but it works. |
Subject: RE: 2002 Grammy Awards From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 09 Jan 02 - 06:54 PM Amergin - Hartford's LP is nominated for trad folk - see my first post that kicked off this thread for all the nominees. Ron |
