Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: CapriUni Date: 21 Jan 02 - 10:20 PM Finally! I've been wrestling with this song idea (not exactly the "mingled threads" idea mentioned) ever since I began this thread, and I think I have it pinned down. I'm new to this puzzle called "song-writing", and my pride in this area is almost nil. So if you have hints on how to make the song clearer or more musical, please tell me. Even though the wedding is past, I hope it's not to late to hand out the gifts. ;-). So Here goes: LIGHTER THAN THE WIND (Tentative title)
A song is lighter than the wind that blows across the sky.

Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Jan 02 - 12:14 PM You're right, Jeri. I've done that many times before, and yesterday was the first time it didn't work for me. I tried it today, and it worked just fine. Maybe I'm preoccupied about getting married, or something... -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Jeri Date: 11 Jan 02 - 10:25 AM Me teaching music theory?! Scary! Rick has managed to get some to stick in my head, but mostly, I just sequence tunes based on how they sound. I'll also change stuff I've created - it may sound "right" one day, and the next, I want it to sound different. This is one of the main joys of music, in my opinion. People can change and adapt it to whatever suits them at a particular moment. Joe, I just tried it and it worked fine. The only thing you have to do is back up just enough to get into the directory the web page is in. In the case of this page and this midi, all you do is replace "dance.htm" with "dance.mid" and hit "go." |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 11 Jan 02 - 08:37 AM A trick I use for getting embedded files... Go to the web page in question (so the file is one of the last ones in your temp folder). Then Start/Programs/Windows Explorer/Windows/Temporary Internet The file should be one of the last ones on the list. Amergin, I'll look for that tune. I like "Give Me Your Hand" which isn't in the DT. PS I sent the midi to Joe, but it's changing as Jeri teaches me more theory! |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Amergin Date: 11 Jan 02 - 06:27 AM Circle of Hearts
(tune the shearing's nae for you)
Will you take your hand in mine, my bonnie lassie-o?
May I look into your eyes, my bonnie lassie-o?
May I kiss upon your lips, my bonnie lassie-o?
Will you have this dance with me, my bonnie lassie-o? nt |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Jan 02 - 10:45 PM Did you try it, Jeri? I think that's exactly what I did, and I got a "forbidden" notice from ivillage. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Jeri Date: 10 Jan 02 - 10:04 PM Complicated, but, you can "view source" to get the name of the embedded MIDI. Type the MIDI name onto the address already in the window. (Because the files are normally in the same directory.) Hit "Go," then "Save as." |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Jan 02 - 09:55 PM Those darn free Webpage providers are getting sneaky. I tried to download Mary's MIDI, and couldn't figure out how to do it. I asked Mary to e-mail it to me, but does anybody know how I can do it? -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Jeri Date: 10 Jan 02 - 09:43 PM Oops, Joe...I think I know what I did. Sorry, and thanks. |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 10 Jan 02 - 09:32 PM Hey Jeri, I'm back home now, but have to leave again. Thanks for the kind words. The link is here. Congratulations Joe and Christina. |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: CapriUni Date: 10 Jan 02 - 09:24 PM Jeri & Mary -- I tried to access the site via the link Jeri provided above, but all I got was the message: "You are not authorized to enter this site". Any clues as to what's up? |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Jeri Date: 10 Jan 02 - 08:53 PM I'm very honored. Mary in Kentucky has arranged a MIDI of the song I wrote, and created a lovely web page here (click). Thanks, Mary.Z Link fixed. It's beautiful, Mary. Gets me all misty. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: CapriUni Date: 09 Jan 02 - 05:21 PM I hope Joe does decide to post the melody for that song, Louie Roy -- it's beautiful, and I'd love to hear it. Meanwhile, I have some ideas for a song (borrowed from Sorcha's thought that it should have something to do with threads, considering how Joe spends so much of his free time ;-) -- hope she doesn't mind). But I'm not having much luck putting the ideas into words that fit a melody... But I'm working on it! |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Louie Roy Date: 08 Jan 02 - 11:28 PM Sorcha,I don't have the smarts to put this on this thread so others might hear it,but I put it on a tape and will mail it to Joe And Christina in the morning 1/9/02.Before I did this I email Joe and asked him if they wanted the song on tape with me singing it and since this is one of the songs that I've made I guess at the present time I'm the only one that knows the tune.Maybe Joe will share it with the rest of the mudcatters. He has my permission.Another song that I made up and posted on Mudcat December 5 01 is (Walk On By And Never Nod Your Head)Check it out it is a beautiful tune and has some excellent words. I also sent this to Joe.Louie Roy |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Sorcha Date: 08 Jan 02 - 08:10 PM Louie Roy, that is lovely! I really do think Joe and Christina need a CD of these songs. Would that be a do-able thing? Most of us can't get to the wedding, but what a gift that would be! Jeri, I am pretty sure SingOut would print it, so yes, you had better get permission from Joe and Christina. |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: 53 Date: 08 Jan 02 - 02:28 PM congrats jeri, on your friend and loyal guitar, hope you enjoy it. BOB |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: wysiwyg Date: 08 Jan 02 - 12:47 PM Oh definitely, Spaw. Just think you have a couple of days to dream up a thread title to beat all thread titles. And because it's not IRL, but online, it can go on long after the nuptials. Just think. Joe could have a permanent virtual stag party going on in his name, for years and years. Wicked, eh? Unless we do it at the Annexe and Jon locks the thread when the ink has dried on the cert... ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: catspaw49 Date: 08 Jan 02 - 12:00 PM Just send me the Guild Jeri...I like Guilds. Say, I got a thought!! How about we throw Joe an on-line stag party? I see his best man who is his sister (geeziz but you're weird Offer) will be at his 3D stag party on Friday, but what about the rest of us? I ain't been to a Stag Party in decades......I may have forgotten a few things....hmm.......anyway, let's throw the lad a bash on THURSDAY night....How about it? Spaw |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Jeri Date: 08 Jan 02 - 11:17 AM A Martin, Bob. Kat, I could send it to SingOut!, but my notes would include the reason FOR the song. At the risk they might actually print it, how much do we want to embarrass Joe and Christina? |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: 53 Date: 08 Jan 02 - 11:04 AM JERI, WHAT KIND OF GUITAR ARE YOU GETTING? bob |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: CapriUni Date: 08 Jan 02 - 09:45 AM Joe -- All this love an attention may embarrass you, but at least this is a music thread, and no two posts are the same. This is fun! Let's make this a Mudcat tradition: let's see if we can make every "announcement" thread (birthday, wedding, new house, heck, even obits) into a song challenge (so I think big -- sue me!) Isn't that what this music is all about, anyway: sharing the big moments of our lives through song? Meanwhile, I'm still working on mine... it's coming, it's coming!! |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Joe Offer Date: 08 Jan 02 - 03:21 AM I've been reading these to Christina over the phone, but it's been tough. I get all misty-eyed and choked up. These songs are just beautiful. I sang Jeri's song to Christina, and you wouldn't believe how much she loved it. Thank you all very much. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: katlaughing Date: 08 Jan 02 - 01:19 AM Jeri, beautiful tune - you ought to get that one in Sing Out, too! Mathew, wonderful, wonderful. You, too, Louie, though I think you ought to sing that one to your own Fran, too! *smile* |

Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Jeri Date: 07 Jan 02 - 11:03 PM And if Bob bought me a Taylor, I'd be all set. (Hey, it's easier to shop for one, and Joe doesn't play guitar, does he?) (Just kidding...I'm getting a better guitar than a Taylor in a couple of days...hehehe.) Thanks for the nice words. I think we're embarrassing Joe, but he and Christina deserve all of these handmade gifts they're getting. How many couples have songs written for them as wedding presents? |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: catspaw49 Date: 07 Jan 02 - 10:50 PM Some great stuff here gang. Jeri, that is simply spectacular on all counts! Again, I feel justified in having you as "The Most Musically Promising 'Catter with Dragonfly Tickled Hooters." Spaw |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Louie Roy Date: 07 Jan 02 - 10:49 PM A Beautiful Wedding
Take my hand, take my hand, slip the ring on my finger
As you walked down the aisle your face it was radiant
As I stood at the alter and you floated toward me
Then I took your hand, slipped the ring on your finger
And I felt so honored that at last you were mine
I've taken your hand slipped the ring on your finger
Yes I've waited a lifetime for this magic moment

Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Jeri Date: 07 Jan 02 - 09:55 PM Here's a midi of the tune to the lyrics I posted above. |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: CapriUni Date: 07 Jan 02 - 08:28 PM here's a better illustration of how to tie two 'threads' together And I'm sure Spaw can come up with some :::ahem::: 'appropriate' inuendo regarding note: "the knots are tied such they lie snugly against each other when the standing ends are pulled." |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: CapriUni Date: 07 Jan 02 - 08:12 PM Well, I just tried the blickie above, and it led to the general home page (no matter how I surf through the site, the adress doesn't seem to change. Any idea how to deal with this?) To see the animation on how to tie a fisherman's knot, scroll down the frame menu on the left, and click on Fifty Knots. When that comes up in the main window, scroll down to #20. In the meantime, I'll try and find an illustration that is easier to get to... (Hey, I like websurfing!) |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: CapriUni Date: 07 Jan 02 - 08:00 PM I believe you, Sharon. Maybe some lyrics could include a bit about a "True Love's Knot" ... There a video of how to tie one, though it's called a Fisherman's Knot here Two half-hitches going in opposite directions... when pulled together, in the final step, they cannot be pulled apart again. It's a good way to make two pieces of rope that are two short to do anything with downright usuable. It's for these reasons it got to be a symbol for marriage... |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: SharonA Date: 07 Jan 02 - 06:57 PM I'm thinking that there's a song in the responsibilities Joe has at Mudcat – – – something nice, along the lines of "Two Threads Combined", perhaps. I'm serious! Sharon |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Matthew Edwards Date: 07 Jan 02 - 05:49 PM This is a serious Challenge, and I'd love to be able to come up with something truly original just to thank Joe for being such a wonderful, sane, and steadying influence here on Mudcat. I seem to recall that Joe enjoys Irish melodies, and in that case there is probably no better recourse than to summon up the style of Thomas Moore as best I can, and "offer" this.
O Blest be the Hour
To the air of "Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms"
And now is the moment for which I have longed, |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Hollowfox Date: 07 Jan 02 - 04:06 PM WYSIWYG, I wouldn't do that. Think what that stuff will do to your hands. |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Sorcha Date: 07 Jan 02 - 03:52 PM Oh my.........goosebumps, Jeri and Mario. Positively splendid! Perhaps Jeri can fly to Cally, and sing it at the wedding...........wouldn't that be wonderful?? (I know, I know) |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: MMario Date: 07 Jan 02 - 03:39 PM no real idea for a tune. I 'hear' a tune as I read it - but it hasn't managed to make it out vocally yet. so anyone feel free... thanks Jeri - now I have a songworm in my head... |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Jeri Date: 07 Jan 02 - 03:19 PM MMario, it's beyond brilliant! Got a tune?
I'm working on the tune to mine. Problem is, I keep hearing Waltzing With Bears in my head, and |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: katlaughing Date: 07 Jan 02 - 03:12 PM Jaysus! MMario and Jeri! That's it, you've both just....well, golly...absolutely beautiful, both of them...I wouldn't know which one to choose were I them, I'd have to use both! WOW! |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: MMario Date: 07 Jan 02 - 02:34 PM He was a lighthouse keeper On a dark and rocky shore He tended to the beacon As so many have before. And when his life was over, He only asked one thing "Please keep the beacon burning 'Til my ship is safely in" I'm not a man to promise That which I cannot do. So my vow unto the keeper Was heartfelt and was true I would keep the lamps a-burning Send the beams out o'er the sea And if his ship to harbour came Safe docked would vessel be. He was a lighthouse keeper On a dark and rocky shore He tended to the beacon As so many have before. And when his life was over, He only asked one thing "Please keep the beacon burning 'Til my ship is safely in" Many times I stood beside him In days now gone and past As his eyes searched the horizon For sight of sail or mast Still he kept the lamplight burning and the light house beacon turning 'Til through the waters wildly churning Came his ship safe home at last He was a lighthouse keeper On a dark and rocky shore He tended to the beacon As so many have before. And when his life was over, He only asked one thing "Please keep the beacon burning 'Til my ship is safely in" The Christina was a vessel Shipshape, well-trim'd and neat For years she'd sailed the ocean Before the trade wind's sweep And ever, as each sail was through The keeper's beacon, shining bright Would mark the bearing in the night To guide the good Christina He was a lighthouse keeper On a dark and rocky shore He tended to the beacon As so many have before. And when his life was over, He only asked one thing "Please keep the beacon burning 'Til my ship is safely in" 'Tis now my tower that bravely sends Across the tempest and the winds To guide the vessel safely in The beacon through the dark And in my harbour now she'll sail At voyage end, unless I fail To keep the keepers beacon 'Til the ship is safely in |

Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: CapriUni Date: 07 Jan 02 - 12:35 PM Beautiful, Jeri! Here I was trying to think of how write a song about how their love is like a song or a dance... You nailed it! Is there a melody to go with this? |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Jeri Date: 07 Jan 02 - 12:31 PM Will You Dance With Me For years they had known each other as friend Not thinking of future romance But one day their eyes met and true love began And now they both join in the glorious dance Will you dance with me, will you take my hand And be steady when our steps fall on rockier land Will you guide my way when I cannot see Will you take my hand and dance with me Whatever life brings you, trial and joy Hear the music in each other's heart Your partner will be there, just hold out your hand And remember the dance as it was at the start Will you dance with me, will you take my hand And be steady when our steps fall on rockier land Will you guide my way when I cannot see Will you take my hand and dance with me |

Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: CapriUni Date: 07 Jan 02 - 10:30 AM I don't know about that 'Spaw... I heard somewhere (may have been on a PBS documentary years ago) that the higher levels of testosterone a man has, the more he goes bald (on top -- his beard, however, gets bushier)... so maybe Christina likes his head, just the way it is. After all, she is marrying him... |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: catspaw49 Date: 07 Jan 02 - 05:46 AM I suggest a membership in the "Hair Club for Men" or possibly a 5 year supply of Rogaine. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Jan 02 - 04:37 AM Genie, Dan Milner (Liam's Brother) paid far too much attention when he did a concert in my home, and he posted all sorts of dirty details in his verse in this thread. He also did quite a number on Martin Ryan. I wonder if he's after Naemanson now... That Milner am a sneaky devil.... -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Genie Date: 07 Jan 02 - 04:11 AM Joe, I'd love to take a stab at writing a song for you and your love, but, as a relative newcomer to Mudcat, I don't know much about your fiancee. Can you, or other Mudcatters, tell me a few key things about her -- and you, for that matter -- to help tailor-make the song for the two of you. When I write wedding songs for other couples (mostly family members), I ask one or both of them to tell me a few key points or ideas they would like the song to reflect. Then I work them into the song. If I can get a few points like that, I'll gladly write a song for you. You've been such a neat person to "know" through Mudcat that I'd love to do it. Genie |

Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: CapriUni Date: 07 Jan 02 - 01:16 AM Not real bad, Sorcha... Though I will say, when I first read through the lyrics, I thought the line was: "If you got bad luck, she'll keep it in line" ... Which must mean that my brain has gone dreaming without me again, and has started playing games with words. Time for me to go to bed! But not before I say "thank you" for getting this thread rolling! |
Subject: RE: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: Sorcha Date: 07 Jan 02 - 01:09 AM OK, since I said I can't write songs, I'll do this..... I wanna tell you all a story 'bout a man named Joe, He fixes alll our troubles, and he seldom says Woe, He's found a lady, she seems mighty fine, If you got a bad back she'll keep it in line..... Real bad, I know...... |
Subject: Challenge! Gift for JoeOffer and bride From: CapriUni Date: 07 Jan 02 - 12:49 AM As was announced here, our own JoeOffer is getting married! There's not much time to buy a wedding gift, so I propose we put our heads and hearts together, and give the blissful couple something that isn't on their gift registry: Let's write a song for them! Or (what the heck!) lots of songs for them!
