Subject: Oor Hamlet (or The Mason's Apron)
From: GUEST,Dustin Laurence
Date: 07 Jan 02 - 02:42 PM

I am interested in learning Adam McNaughtan's _Oor Hamlet_, but the only available recording I am aware of is on Martin Carthy's _Carthy Chronicles_, which is a 4-CD boxed set. As fine a singer as Carthy no doubt is, I don't want to buy a boxed set for one song. Does anyone know of a single album which is in print and has this song?

Failing that, the lyrics aren't hard to find, so a recording of _The Mason's Apron_ would do to learn the melody. Most of the recordings of this song that I've seen seem to be medleys (probably instrumental?). Does anyone know of a recording of this song (I presume it has words) which is available and would be suitable for learning the tune?

Thanks, Dustin

So don't buy it for ONE song -- buy it for 4 CDs full of brilliant singing, absolutely stunning guitar work. fantastic songs with amazing arrangements by a Who's Who of England's finest folk and folk rock artists. Seriously - it sounds as if you never actually heard Martin Carthy -- get a single CD of his and you may just find yourself running to get the boxed set.

PS: Sorry -- I don't have the words to 'Hamlet' written down. Great song though.

Oor Hamlet
(aka The Three-Minute Hamlet)

Words by : Adam McNaughtan
Tune of : The Mason's Apron

There was a king nodding in his garden all alone,
When his brother in his ear poured a little bit of henbane,
Stole his brother's crown and his money and his widow,
But the dead king walked and got his son and said, "Now listen kiddo,
I've been killed and it's your duty to take revenge on Claudius,
Kill him quick and clean and tell the nation what a fraud he is."
The kid says, "Right I'll do it, but I'll have to play it crafty,
So that no will suspect me I'll kid on that I'm a dafty."

So for all except Horatio, and he counts him as a friend,
Hamlet, that's the kid, he kids on he's 'round the bend,
And because he's not yet willing for obligatory killing,
He tries to make his uncle think he's tuppence off a shilling.
Takes a rise out of Polonius, treats poor Ophelia vile,
Tells Rosencrantz and Guildenstern that Denmark's blooded bile,
Then a troupe of traveling actors local seven eighty four,
Arrive to do a special one-night gig in Elsinore.

Hamlet, Hamlet, acting balmy,
Hamlet, Hamlet, loves his mommy,
Hamlet, Hamlet, hesitating,
He wonders if the ghost's a fake,
And that is why he's waiting.

So Hamlet wrote a scene for the players to enact,
So Horatio and he could see if Claudius cracked,
The play was called "The Mousetrap" (not the one that's running now),
And sure enough the king walked out before the scene was through.
So Hamlet's got the proof his uncle gave his dad the dose,
The only problem being now that Claudius knows he knows,
So while Hamlet tells his mother her new husband's not a fit man,
Uncle Claude takes out a contract with the English king as hit man.

Then when Hamlet killed Polonius, and the corpus was delecti,
Was the king's excuse to send him for an English hempen necktie,
With Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to make quite sure he got there,
But Hamlet jumped the boat and put the finger straight on that pair.
When Laertes heard his dad's killed in the bedroom in the arras,
He came running back to Elsinore tout-suite hot-foot from Paris.
When Ophelia heard her dad's killed by the man she was to marry,
After saying it with flowers, she committed hari-kari.

Hamlet, Hamlet, no messin'
Hamlet, Hamlet, learned his lesson
Hamlet, Hamlet, Yorick's crust
Convinced him all men good or bad,
At last must come to dust.

Then Laertes lost his cool and was demanding retribution,
The king said keep your head and I'll supply you a solution.
So the king arranged a sword-fight for the interested parties,
With a blunted sword for Hamlet and a sharp sword for Laertes.
And to make double sure (the old belt-and-braces line),
He fixed up a poisoned sword-tip and a poisoned cup of wine.
The poisoned sword got Hamlet, but Laertes went and fluffed it,
Because he stabbed himself and he confessed before he snuffed it.

Then Hamlet's mommy drank the wine and as her face turned blue,
Hamlet said, "I think this king's a baddie through and through."
"Incestuous, murderous, damned Dane," he said, to be precise,
Then made up for hesitating once, by killing Claudius twice.
He stabbed him with his knife and forced the wine between his lips
He said, "The rest is silence," and he cashed in all his chips.
They fired a volley over him that shook the topmost rafter,
And Fortinbras, knee deep in Danes, lived happily ever after.

Hamlet, Hamlet, end of story
Hamlet, Hamlet, very gory
Hamlet, Hamlet, I'm on my way
And if you think that was confusing,
You should read the bloody play.

It's also been recorded by Iain MacKintosh and Brian McNeill for their joint live album 'Live and Kicking', available direct from Brian (brianus at earthlink.net) and another worthwhile buy, not least for Brian's mad descent into The Mason's Apron, rock 'n' roll, Edvard Grieg and J. S. Bach afterwards! Some years earlier, Iain recorded it solo for 'Standing Room Only' (1986).

So sorry I've never heard of Martin Carthy--the fact is, I'm something of an intruder. I'm really a sailor who likes to sing Sea Shanties, not a real folk person at all.

Thanks particularly for the album pointers--I thought McNaughtan's recording was out of print. I shall look for the one you mentioned.

In Morpheus, at the moment, there are ten different MP3 versions of Hamlet from three minute, to one for a sloothful vassel, and another by Andy Grifith, ranging from 3 minutes to 5 minutes, a CBS special aoubt "Hamlet was Good Boy" and of course the play clocking in at 57 minutes, and the Tchaikovsky overture.

The comedy one by Seamus Kennedy might fill your needs and keep your pocketbook filled as well...not to mention... you can have it in five minutes. A short wait indeed!

Believe it or not, Kitty, I heard it performed at the crew party/shanty sing which is held every year on the Pilgrim of Dana Point (i.e. a boat). So I kinda associate it with shanty singing, and anyway it went over well (as it probably does everywhere it is sung). Anything sufficiently funny can be sung at a shanty session, as far as I can tell.

I imagine A shellback chorus would be a bunch of old sailors backing up the shantyman--but I have no idea what THE Shellback Chorus is. :-)

Should you find yourself this side of the pond, the Shellback Chorus is an assortment of singers including several 'Catters who can be found singing shanties and other maritime songs at a variety of festivals. The website is still under construction, but http://members.tripod.co.uk/shellbackchorus/index.html gives information about their festival appearances in 2002.

I gave it my husband for his birthday, and although we already have almost all of his records, there are a number of tracks on the collection that haven't been released previously. The Watersons' live rendition of "The Prickle Holly Bush" circa 1987 is untouchable!

Both CD's are currently available at major retailers @ CAMSCO See Dick's Post Below is a review of the CD

"ADAM McNAUGHTAN - "Last Stand at Mount Florida" - Greentrax CDTRAX120 Writing and delivering humorous songs involves particular skills and Adam McNaughtan's reputation as one of Scotland's most gifted comic writers and singers can only be enhanced with the release of his third album. The title "Last Stand at Mount Florida" is a play on words. The cover photograph shows a bulky, 56-year-old, Queens Park-supporting ex-English teacher (his words) posed in front of a Hampden Park backdrop while the last track on the album "The Twin-Towered Stand" is a history in song of the glory days of football. But Last Stand had other connotations for Custer and there are more than enough examples on this album to show that Mr McNaughtan has gone his own way, making the decisions (he is also producer) and choosing the songs he likes to sing. Obliging as ever, he provides sleeve notes for non-Glaswegians and refutes suggestions of parochialism by pointing out that several of the songs come from the East and North of Glasgow. So to the songs themselves. The comic ones are masterpieces. The long awaited sequel to "Oor Hamlet" appears as "The Scottish Song" (with Lady Macbeth airing the king-size quilt) and healthy eaters everywhere will identify with "Erchie Cathcairt" and "Cholesterol", which carries the shortest sleeve note of them all: "Glasgow is recognised as the heart disease capital of the universe. Glasgow doesnae care". Other topics touched upon lightly include the City of Culture debate; Standard Grade English exam folios; plans to develop Glasgow Green, and a character assassination of Noah which reveals his love of the bottle. Noah's links with Glasgow remain unclear but Bud Neill might have provided a clue such as "Ararat. Aranither rat." There's a pawky version of music-hall comic Wullie Lindsay's "The Shy Lover", complete with patter, while "Thomas Muir of Huntershill" and "The Weaver's Lament" show his more serious side. The backings by fellow-Stramashers Finlay Allison, Bob Blair and John Eaglesham never dominate and the man himself is in excellent voice throughout. Thoroughly recommended. Hey, gargoyle, thanks for mentioning my recording of it. I was much too modest to mention it myself (Inobu is so much better at that kind of thing *BG). It's on my Bar Rooms and Ballads CD. I also have another Adam McNaughtan song -The Scottish Song- which is Macbeth sung to the tune of the Soldier's Joy, on my newest CD A Smile And A Tear. Both are available from Camsco or cdbaby.com. Camsco purchases benefit the Mudcat, of course! And Adam McNaughtan is a genius!

All the best.

Seamus

Jeri,

Wow, you guys spend a lot of time at the keyboard.

Thanks, I can slowly puzzle through sheet music or have my wife play it, so that helps a lot.

Dustin

Wow. I asked for an album that had Oor Hamlet, or The Masons Apron. Well, thanks to you all, I have: a long list of recordings, a newly-installed Morpheus (and I'd kicked the habit after Napster went belly up, too), downloaded a copy of Seamus Kennedy's version, another version or two of the words, and sheet music for the melody. And all posted faster than I could read it, too. Thanks to all very much.

Dustin, amazed

If you'd been in the Mudcat Snug Tavern room on PalTalk last night you'd have heard two slightly different versions of Oor Hamlet sung; one by myself and one by Jacko@nz. You'd have heard a lot of other fine songs as well!

Scott

To make this thread more interesting Scottish pipers play a tune called The Devil among the Tailors that is very close to The Mason's Apron.

The Devil Among the Tailors is known as the Devil's Dream to old-timey musicians.
