From: Bugsy

THE FISHFINGER SONG
(Miles Wootton)

Come all ye jolly sail-i-ers, who sail across the sea;
And listen to this story I'm about to tell to thee.
Concerning them bold Fish-iar lads who sail the seas so wet;
A-hunting for fish fingers, with a harpoon and a net.

'Twas in the year of '64, or was it '63?
We set sail from Basingstoke, bound for Amer-i-key.
The storms they was a-ra-ji-ing, and the waves a dreadful sight;
It took us forty days, me boys, to reach the Isle of Wight.

Our Captain's name was Gladys. He wore a dress of red;
Which might have been the reason he was not marr-i-ed.
He was a gay old sea-bitch and it was his fav-our-ite joy,
To take a turn around the deck with the handsome cabin boy.

And then off Iceland's icy shores, a mighty shoal we spied;
Of Froz-i-en Fish Fin-gi-ers, a-waiting to be fried.
With our harpoons at the ready my boys, upon that shoal we burst;
A-las, we was too late me lads, the Japanese had got there first.

Them Nippon lads came at we, they was a terrible crew;
A-brandishing tran-sis-ti-ers, and a-giving it the old Kung-Fu.
We sang them a sea shan-ti-ee, but they did not want to know;
And they slashed away our mizzen mast with one karate blow.

We got back to old Eng-gi-land in a twelve month and a day;
It would have been much quicker, but we went the pretty way.
Take warning all ye sail-i-or lads what sails the sea in ships
Don't ever go fish fing-i-ering, just stick to cod and chips

Cheers

That is more difficult
I have just been thro this with joe Offer and another tune and it was so big it crashed my email system and after that the performance to get back up and running was pain
On the basis that its easier to send you a copy by snail mail. How on this system do I find where to send it?

Subject: Lyr Add: THE VILLAGE PRODUCTION OF HAMLET
From: GUEST,Fhe Fantum
Date: 29 May 03 - 07:56 AM

This version was taken from a Fred Wedlock recording and is directly out of my head. So mistakes are all mine and I claim them.

Title THE VILLAGE PRODUCTION OF HAMLET
Author Miles Wootton?

The village hall is packed tonight. The lights are turned down low.
Behold the local thespians put on their greatest show;
But in the green room panic reigns, suspense that's hard to bear.
The bell has rung, the shows begun, and Hamlet is not there,
In the village production of Hamlet.

In the fast lane of the bypass on a push bike without lights,
Hamlet's pedalling madly and it’s ruining his tights.
He fancies young Ophelia and he wonders whether he
Might score at last tonight. Is it to be or not to be
In the village production of Hamlet?

The curtain jerks apart to start the story.
It’s bitter cold. the cast are sick at heart.
The ghost appears all horrible and hoary.
It’s the village squire. he really looks the part,
But to calm his nerves the squire’s been on the gin all afternoon,
And now he’s feeling stage struck and he'd like to have a croon,
So he comes in with a chorus of a song from Brigadoon,
In the village production of Hamlet.

Ophelia's offended and distracted.
She thinks that Hamlet doesn't care at all.
It’s the first time in her life she's ever acted.
She's very nearly climbing up the wall.
She thinks he'll never make it when through the door he trips.
The audience collapses when at last they get to grips
As he staggers on in doublet, hose, codpiece and cycle clips
In the village production of Hamlet.

The interval has come around and Hamlet's full of hope,
Heads for Ophelia's dressing room to have a crafty grope.
He throws away his cycle clips as through the door he bursts,
But all that solid womanhood Laertes made it first,
In the village production of Hamlet.

Hamlet staggers from the room, his visage pale and wan.
His heart is full of vengeance but the show must still go on.
He struts and frets his little hour across the tragic stage
Whilst Laertes and Ophelia are otherwise engaged
In the village production of Hamlet.

The final act is played out at the double.
The action gets completely out of hand.
Hamlet clobbers Laertes with a shovel
In a scene the Bard of Avon never planned.
Hamlet’s plastic helmet has sustained a nasty dent.
He leaps upon Laertes with murderous intent,
But Laertes puts the boot in and his rapier gets bent
In the village production of Hamlet.

The prompter’s setting fire to his copy.
He's shouting “all for one and one for all.”
Hamlet's grappling with the village bobby.
It’s rapier versus truncheon in the stalls.
Ophelia's had hysterics and lies screaming on the ground.
The producer’s in the car park letting Hamlet's tyres down,
And a Monty Python Talent Scout is racing for the phone
In the village production of Hamlet.

End

It’s got some high notes in and I struggle to get there and for that reason I don't use all that often what is a well crafted song. I will have to go back to it and try either improving my technique or cheating by modifying the tune. Good luck with it and may it give you as much pleasure as it’s given me.

The Fantum

have started some preliminary enquiry about getting TGFFD and another of Miles onto a CD (he also has stacks and stacks of unreleased songs) .. will chase this up .. truthfully it would be be much desirable and convenient if he can get the vinyl material transferred to CD .. easier for posting and playing!!

Will speak to his "Agent" infrequent Mudcattter "Chouxfleur" .. who has the equipment (allegedly :) !

Or not.

A moment's belated research reveals that:
(a) They're both in the DT
(b) The one I thought was called 'Inn Camra' is actually called 'Public Bar' (as, strangely enough, is mentioned above). Still, I think Inn Camra is a better title!
(c) Whoever posted 'The Great Fish Finger Disaster' can't spell Miles's surname - admittedly a little tricky!
and (d) I ought to do some research before I dash off a post.

Ho Hum.

I will post them as soon as I can recheck the words
I can do them out of my head but the Folk Process will have been at work and there are almost certainly slight variations to the original.

My only comment on the song is it has a high note in it and I find it dificult to sing.

They were a dreadful crew
A brandishing transistors

We sang to them a shanty
And that really made them slow
Then their skipper felled our mizzem mast

i know its not pc- perhaps thats why that verse isn't included.

The best thing for you to do re The Village Production of Hamlet is to give Miles a ring. He is so modest that he probably wont have a copy himself, but may know of someone local who does n we can rip off a tape for you.

Had a small snifter with his Woottonship last night, delivered the LP packaging kindly supplied/loaned by Hille (d'ya want them back????). He says the price is £10 inc post n packing. £8 for the albums and £2 P&P tho he doesnt actually know how much that will cost.

I think it may be a bit more for Jon Bartlett in Canada. Let us know if you want one and we'll have to check with the Post Office on cost.

Just spoke to Miles on the 'phone. He sounds in good spirits, and has agreed to sell me a couple of albums (one for me, one for John Breeze) for GBP8.00 each. I am despatching my daughter, who is working in Brighton at the moment, to collect them.

He reckons that, after his fairly long retirement, it would take him a few months to rehearse his act, but did not rule out the prospect of doing a few selected gigs.

Can't wait !!

Hi y'all

A point of interest for any one in UK who wants to post 12" albums anywhere is to get the proper envelope/packaging. These can be obtained from: Covers 33 PO Box 59 Halifax West Yorkshire HX1 1JR

Costs are 25 = £10, 50 = £18

A friend who is a record dealer uses these to post World-wide and has never had a problem.

I shall pass on the few I have to John/Miles so that they can post out to the folks who have requested 'TGFFD'

Cheers, Hille
