Does anyone from Australia know of these two booksellers?

I'm contemplating buying these two Gaelic Song books.

1. [10] The Gaelic Songster. An T-Oranaiche: No Co-Thional Taghte do Orain Ur Ahus Shean, a Chuid Mhor Dhiubh Nach Robh Riamh Roimhe Ann An Clo Le Gilleasburg Mac-Na-Ceardadh.
Glasgow, Archibald Sinclair, 1879. Half-bound leather. All edges gilt. Gilt to raised bands on spine. Marbled endpapers. Cloth on boards worn, some rubbing to hinges and edges, o/wise contents good. A stoutly bound copy. Scarce. 527pp. Bookseller Inventory # 56940
Price: A$ 200.00 (approx. US$ 103.87)

1. MACKENZIE, John [10] SAR-OBAIR NAM BARD GAELACH: or, The Beauties of Gaelic Poetry, and Lives of the Highland Bards:
MacLachlan & Stewart, Edinburgh 1872. lxvi, 408pp incl. index. Name on f.f.e. and newspaper cuttings attached to endpapers. Some staining and discolouration to endpapers otherwise good. Has been rebound in half-leather with small amount of wear to cnrs. . The poems are in Scottish Gaelic and do not have translations. The notes are all inEnglish. Bookseller Inventory # 28007
Price: A$ 285.00 (approx. US$ 148.02)

Presented by Grub Street Bookshop, Melbourne, VIC, Australia

In particular the second. If you know of the booksellers, I'd like to know if they are reputable, usually they are. Also, can they be negotiated downwards? The prices are reasonable, I'd say, but if I can get it lower I'd like to.

I just lost 40 years of book collected because of a fire at my storage facility with no insurance. So, if someone knows of either company, please let me know.

Hi George

I found a link to the second shop:

http://members.austarmetro.com.au/~grubst/index.html

Seems ok, but as I live in Sydney I haven't come across it.

I couldn't work out the other bookshop - I think you left it out of your e-mail. If it's in Sydney I'm happy to go and have a look at it for you and see what shape it's in. I'm no good at haggling however!

regards Callie

I did. Thanks Callie. It should have had this line between the two listings:

Presented by The Book Firm, Glebe, NSW, Australia

So, it looks like it's a fair piece from you. Sorry to hear the small amount of rain hasn't succeeded in stopping your bushfires. Good luck with those.

G'day George,

That's a rather odd bit of address ... I thought it might have been an alternative name for the old-established Cornstalk Bookshop, in Glebe Pt Rd, Glebe (since "Cornstalk" ... old local term for a native-born new South Welshman ... doesn't mean much to anybody who isn't). Jowvere, despite the Glebe PO address, The Book Firm seem to have their physical presence in Doncaster Ave, Kensington - about 6 kilometres south east. Maybe they have an office ... or a home ... in Glebe.

Anyway, I will walk past Cornstalk (with whom I have dealt a number of times) on the way home in 4 hours ... but not The Book Firm, so it's back to someone who may have dealt with them. (They are in the telephone directory, so they aren't exactly a "hole in the wall" ... maybe.)

Regards,

Bob Bolton

Hi George

There's a mobile number for "The Book Firm" in my local directory, and the suburb listed is actually MY suburb!

If they have a physical presence in Doncaster Ave, that's actually on MY way to work (and only several blocks from my house). It's not a very booky area (although as it's right next to the racecourse, there are plenty of bookMAKERS), and Ican't imagine they have much passing trade!

Either way, if you'd like me to check out the book for you, I'm happy to do so.

Callie

Thanks Callie, I've just had a note last night from someone else who is interested in Gaelic texts. He says he's trying to get that reprinted here in Nova Scotia, in an edition which included with the original text, local songs of the same time the book came out. I think that one I will wait for.

The An t-Oranaiche, I have a photocopied version, but might have picked up this one, if it could be ascertained the reputation of the bookseller and quality of the book.
