Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: Ella who is Sooze Date: 11 Jan 02 - 04:41 AM Oh bugger! I keep forgetting about this one. I'd love to go. But getting any time off work around this time of the year, means you have to either sell you soul, beg, bribe, or promise the world to get even one day off. And seeing as I've done all that for a super dooper holi hol later on in Feb... I couldn't go through it all again. BUGGER! someone remind me sooner for next years! bother bother bother...... |
Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 11 Jan 02 - 04:51 AM Sorry, Ella. Thought we talked about Celtic Connections just before Christmas. How early would you like a reminder sent? |
Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: Ella who is Sooze Date: 11 Jan 02 - 05:55 AM early! just the gentle cattle prod throughout the year! :) I usually (though can get away with severe grovelling) have to give around 2 months leave notice... (arghhh I know!) |
Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: GUEST,DaisyA Date: 11 Jan 02 - 01:34 PM I'm going to Kate Rusby, and La Bottine Souriante (who are dead good for anyone who has never heard of them)... Why does it cost so much even for poor students like myself????? Grrr. Daisy |
Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: 8_Pints Date: 11 Jan 02 - 01:41 PM Noreen, Thanks for the correction! Are you interested in going? Bob & Sue vG |
Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: Big Tim Date: 12 Jan 02 - 12:13 PM It's Shane MacGowan for me, yet again, if he turns up. A mere Eight Pints, what a wimp! |

Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: Big Tim Date: 13 Jan 02 - 05:20 AM 8 Pints: glad you started this thread, it's good to have a real Scottish one for a change. Is Bobby Eaglesham playing this year? If so don't miss him, he's great. Have seen him there for the last two years, once at the Piping Centre (very intimate) and last year at the RCH supporting Mary Coughlan (I went to see Bobby). Have moved out of Glasgow now so not taking in this year's Festival but enjoy yourselves all you folk who are.

Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: Big Tim Date: 13 Jan 02 - 05:21 AM Except for Shane: you have to take every chance to see this guy while he's still with us. |
Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: janey Date: 13 Jan 02 - 09:10 AM My sister now lives in Glasgow (off Saltmarket, nice and central). We went up for Hogmanay and are considering a trip up during January. Is Celtic Connections mainly concert based or will there be more sessions than usual in the pubs? If so, where? We would appreciate any pointers. Cheers! |
Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: O'Trasno Date: 13 Jan 02 - 11:32 AM Janey, The festival doesn't really make much impact on the pub session scene, but all the artists stay in the central hotel, and there is a club stage in there with performances till the wee small hours, and more informal sessions than you can shake a fiddle-bow at! Be warned-the club gets VERY busy at w/ends...so get a ticket and go early...(during the week it's quieter and free to get in.)....i think that having a concert ticket for that day entitles you to get into the club the same night. The club kicks off about 11pm...and continues till breakfast! |
Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: Scabby Douglas Date: 14 Jan 02 - 08:51 AM Janey.. If your sister lives off Saltmarket, whenever you're visiting, drop in on a Wednesday evening to St Andrews in the Square, also just off Saltmarket. regular singing session there. SAINTS is also hosting a couple of ceilidhs this year for Celtic connections. Cheers Steven |
Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: janey Date: 14 Jan 02 - 01:37 PM We can actually see St Andrews from Sally's flat so next time we are up we might pay it a visit. What is the Tolbooth like on a Thursday? |
Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: Scabby Douglas Date: 15 Jan 02 - 07:32 AM The tollbooth can be a little ermm... vigorous... any evening. The Scotia, and the Victoria have more on in the way of sessions - that's along in Stockwell Street and the Briggait. (about 250 yds away). Also the Start folk club is in Clyde street (just a little further away) every Thursdau evening. Cheers Steven |
Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: Scabby Douglas Date: 15 Jan 02 - 07:34 AM That would be Star Club - not Start Club |
Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 19 Jan 02 - 05:28 AM You will find some on-line interviews and articles relating to Celtic Connections performers (Gillian Frame, Mackenzie sisters, Dubliners, Karan Casey, etc) at the Glasgow Sunday Herald review including an interesting article about classical-type composition by people such as Brian MacNeil who largely play tradional music. |
Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: swirlygirl Date: 19 Jan 02 - 09:42 AM Oh I wish I could go!!! Damn me for moving to Liverpool from dear old glesga toun!! If you want to go the festival club you normally have to buy a ticket but it's only about £3-5 depending on what day of the week it is... Vicky bar at Briggait session on a Friday is very good (my fav pub!!) Say hello from me (Gwen) if you go! Wish I could go next weekend for Eliza Carthy and her mum and dad but it's not to be... Will try next year! Have fun.. :) xxx |
Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: Susanne (skw) Date: 19 Jan 02 - 05:13 PM Too early in the year for me, unfortunately, but I'll be in Scotland in late April, so thanks for the pointer to the St Andrews session. All my friends are Scotia regulars but I'll try to make it on a Wednesday and hope to meet some Mudcatters there. Enjoy the Celtic Connections! |
Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 20 Jan 02 - 04:13 AM the clicky I gave brings you to the latest edition of the Sunday Herald, and the articles in question were in LAST week's review section, so you may have to search the archives. |
Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: Tattie Bogle Date: 20 Jan 02 - 06:41 PM I'm going to Leo McCann on Tuesday. Festival Club is £2.50 on weekdays, £5 at weekends - NOT included in the evening concert ticket price. I agree, they never get the programme out early enough, nor do they send enough to Edinburgh. They dropped me off the mailing list although I bought tickets last year. This year I picked up programmes while in Glasgow, drove home 50 miles, only to discover that the workshop programme was in a separate leaflet. They ignored my email request to post me one. BUT - the music's great! Tattie B |
Subject: RE: Help: Celtic Connections, Glasgow, UK From: Scabby Douglas Date: 21 Jan 02 - 04:16 AM The publicity this year has been just terrible... The programme didn't emerge till very late, and even in the programme there are lots of mistakes and lots of information is missing. However, as you say, Tattie b..the music's pretty good. Cheers Steven |
