New series started in the UK last night. Guess it has been out in the 'States for a while. Anyhow, with all the recent controversy about Harry Potter etc. I was wondering what the reaction to Ms. Gellers ressurection by means of witchcraft and subsequent escape from live burial was?

I must admit I was a bit concerned myself about the very casual approach to such a potentialy controversial topic. I guess it just me getting old but there seemed to be something weird about the portayal of a teenage witch killing an animal (implied) to bring back her friend from the dead! I would have expected it at the cinema or in a late night horror - but mainstream TV? And without any discussion of the ethical implications???

Still enjoyed it though. Wonder if Giles will go back to advertising coffee now he has returned to England. Not that I watch it mind you... With teeneagers in the house what else could I do... I was forced!!! Honest!

Just to show this ain't too serious i was told a tale by a cricketing friend of mine last year. He reckoned he went to a match where a member of the opposite team took a spray can and graffitied the officials white coat with bright red paint. "Don't worry", said the opposing captian. "That's just one of our local characters, John Duff. We call him Duffy the umpire sprayer..."

Ahhh, a subject close to my heart - Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the only reason to watch TV. Keep an eye out for the musical episode in this series.
Yeah, I'd be curious about the reaction to resurrection. Can't see a problem with it myself, but it's bound to mean the end of the world and the decline of civilisation for Daily Mail readers. As far as I know Buffy on terrestrial TV is censored for the 6.45pm time slot, but an uncut version goes out on Friday nights.
(My addiction to Buffy has nothing to do with the fact that Spike is the sexiest undead bloke on earth, MmmmRRRrrrrrr, phoar, etc... oh no, that's just pure coincidence...going to take a cold shower now...)

That's an interesting question, Dave. I live in the US, and I usually keep at least one ear tuned in to the TV news (including entertainment news), and I can tell you that I have not heard about one peep of protest from fundamentalist-Christian groups or anyone else concerning Buffy's resurrection, nor any cries from animal-rights groups concerning the implied animal sacrifice. It seems that the fundies, at least, are too busy protesting the Harry Potter movie and burning Rowling's books to have noticed ol' Buff.

Actually, the TV show has been on the air for a number of years now (I'm not sure how many; I'd have to ask my niece, the Buffy fan), and the resurrection plotline is only a recent development. Also, the whole series began as an ongoing TV version of the previously released movie "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (with a different actress playing the lead). There's also a spin-off TV series, "Angel" (the name of one of the major characters).

Anthony Head who plays "Giles" is taking part in another "Buffy" spinoff. Called "Ripper" and also by Joss Whedon, I understand it is at present being shot and may air this year. The original movie was utter trash and I felt sorry for the likes of Rutger Hauer and Donald Sutherland. All the more credit to Sarah Michelle Geller and her fellow thespians for making the series the fantastic one it is. Credit also to Joss. Last night's new series opener was one of the best things I have ever watched on TV.

A few pagans stateside were up in arms about the deer sacrifice. I had thought it was pretty clear from the episode that Willow understood the serious nature of what she was doing and the gravity and suddenness of that scene underscored the sometimes brutal narure of true magic; it ain't all crystals and spinning roses in the air.

It IS interesting to place this event in context with what Willow's character goes through later in the season however...and that's all I'll say.

This show just gets better and better. I never thought I'd even watch it..now I am hooked.

Trash telly fix! Spike the unbeatable! I'm torn 'cos Buffy's not even dead on my non-cable TV yet. Still got thru a box of tissues at Mom tho'. Aaah, Spike! How did that two-fingered salute make it through the credits? "Bloody colonials!"

This week's Buffy (in LA): Buffy is invisible and she and Spike are having sex when Zander walks in but he can't see Buffy because she's invisible. It was hysterically funny and I laughed for 20 minutes or so. I'm giggling as I think about it.

I've been a Buffy fan from the first episode, and thought I was the only one who fancies Spike!! He is one hell of a character, and his throwaway lines are hysterical.

I LOVE SPIKE TOO!!! At last, I said it. I thought Angel was better looking when he was vamped out.... not a lot needed to make that brow menacing.....

All I can say is, I'm bummed that I missed both runs of the first (work and a better offer) so Grrr, argh!

I thought Joss Whedon was "forever Knight"...... never really got hooked by Buffy.... but I did like Forever Knight (even though Nick does look a bit like an older Dougie Houser!!!

Actually, there's been a lot of stuff in the background of Buffy that I thought would have offended certain people a lot more than the Slayer coming back. Attitudes to the church, when it appears, and certain decorations when Buffy goes into a demon dimension were rather thought provoking. Harry Potter exists in a world with no apparent trace of Christianity apart from Christmas. (no social workers, either) Buffy doesn't.

Maybe they don't watch it? Or they don't notice?

Maybe they won't get so much publicity if they complain about Buffy? Or am I just an old cynic, fed up with single issue politics, and the selfishness that they portray. Guess it must be Sunday afternoon, nothing else to do.

I think Diane Burke/Gallagher is the author of Buffy paperback tie-ins to the series rather than the series proper......

Just seen the episode 'The Body'...very impressive writing and acting!
