Subject: Lyr Add: MARCHING SONG (Holt/Segall)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 18 Nov 13 - 10:11 AM

My transcription from the recording at YouTube:

MARCHING SONG
Words by Will Holt, music by Bernardo Segall
Played by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Bernardo Segall
From the soundtrack of the film "Custer of the West" (1967)

What does the weary private do
When the war is done, when the war is through?
What does the weary private do
    So early in the morning?
He walks just like he's walking now
When the war is done, when the war is through,
And now he walks behind the plow
    So early in the morning.

What does the loud-mouth sergeant do
When the war is done, when the war is through?
What does the loud-mouth sergeant do
    So early in the morning?
He swears and shouts till his face is blue
When the war is done, when the war is through,
But mules won't move like privates do
    So early in the morning.

And what does the valiant captain do
When the war is done, when the war is through?
What does the valiant captain do
    So early in the morning?
He sleeps and snores like he used to do
When the war is done, when the war is through,
When he slept the bloody battle through
    So early in the morning.

And what does the mighty gen'ral do
When the war is done, when the war is through?
What does the mighty gen'ral do
    So early in the morning?
He's got no job to go back to
When the war is done, when the war is through.
There's just one thing that he can do
    So early in the morning.

He can't plant corn and he can't grow wheat
When the war is done, when the war is through.
He can't teach hogs to quick retreat
    So early in the morning.
So what in the hell does a gen'ral do
When the war is done, when the war is through?
He waits for a war to get into
    So early in the morning.

Cumberland Gap

"Me and my wife and my wife's pap.
We all live down in the Cumberland Gap.

cho:      Cumberland Gap, Cumberland Gap.
We all live in the Cumberland Gap.

Cumberland Gap is a noted place
Three kinds of water to wash your face.

The first white man in the Cumberland Gap
Was doctor Walker, an English Chap.

Daniel Boone on Pinnacle Rock,
Killed many Injuns with his old flintlock.

Cumberland Gap is a noted place,
Three kinds of water to wash your face.

Daniel Boone on Pinnacle Rock,
He killed Injuns with 'his old flintlock.

Lay down, boys, and take a little nap.
Fo'teen miles to the Cumberland Gap

This is one of those songs that has many variations. One
variation was sung with North and one by the South in the
Civil War. Here is one I have heard with only 5 verses.
You can probably make up an equal number and be a safe
ground in the folk tradition.HX

The Old Soldier

THERE WAS AN OLD SOLDIER

OH, I had a little duck and he had a web foot,
And he built his nest in a mulberry bush,
And he ruffled up his feathers to keep himself warm,
Another little song wouldn't do us any harm.

O, there was an old soldier and he had a wooden leg,
He had no tobacco, but tobacco he could beg;
Another old soldier as sly as a fox,
He always had tobacco in his old tobacco box.

Said the one old soldier, won't you give me a chew?
Said the other old soldier, I'll be danged if I do;
Just save up your pennies and throw away your rocks,
And you'll always have tobacco in your old tobacco box.

Wel the old old soldier was a feelin' very bad,
He says, I'll get even, I will, egad;
Then he goes to a corner, takes a rifle from his peg,
and stabs the other soldier with a splinter from his leg.

O there was an old hen and she had a wooden foot,
and she made her nest by a sycamore root,
and she laid mere eggs than any hen on the farm,
Another wooden foot wouldn't do her any harm.

Well, of all the darn songs I ever heard made
The one I'm a singin' puts them all in the shade;
If you don't like it you can run along hum'
'cause I'm singin' this song for myself, by gum!
