I looked in the forum search, didn't see a matching thread, but I have this sneaking suspicion I asked this before..... But since I can't find it.....

Has anyone bought a certain type of Disc cleaner? The one I am looking for takes the disc, and apparently 'shaves off' a thin layer of the CD, cleaning scratches and whatever else...

Most of my CD's have travelled through North Atlantic winter storms and the occasional hurricane, from my time in the Canadian Navy.
But i am looking for an option other than completely repurchasing half my inventory.

I am looking for someone who has or has used this product, nothing more.

Thanks in advance for your help.

steve

I don't know about the product you mentioned but the are others that will do a professional job of taking the scratches out, which is all you really need, I suspect. Any good jewelry supply store or general plastic supply store should have buffing compounds specifically formulated to remove scratches from plastic. The two I've seen myself were made by reputable, established companies and, so, should be satisfactory.

The the UK we use ' Brasso ' - which is actually a metal cleaner aka fine buffing compound in a solvent. That works a treat but can be smelly! Always polish from the center to the edge.

Apropos of bad CD's - if you are having trouble playing them you may have 'CD rot' - hold the CD's up with a strong light behing them (like a desk lamp) and look for holes. Some older CD's self-destruct, especially when subjected to hostile conditions - I have lost dozens like that. Nothing you can do about it . It's due to impurities in the aluminium or silver layer apparently.

You've already had the suggestion of one metal cleaner BRASSO, I suggest another, over here in the UK it's called SOLVO AUTOSIL. It's a chrome/aluminium polish which I use for getting scratches out of perspex.

Have you tried copying your CDs on a PC with a CD writer? You could always edit individual tracks as WAV files if you needed to. At least you could make yourself working copies so that you could 'rest' the originals and it might be a good idea to make copies before you try and clean any rare CDs.

Scratches on a CD are more likely to affect the tracking than the reproduction especially if they occur in the TOC (Table of Contents).
