I'm going. Last I heard there was still room. It is about $75 for a weekend of do it yourself music. No special teachers or anything. Cabins in the woods Northeast of Seattle. Public transportation from airport or train or bus station would get you to Carnation I think..and I imagine rides could be provided from a meeting point, although that would have to be arranged. I do encourage people who want to meet others and have a weekend of music to come, assuming there is still room. mg

Well, I am. It'll be my first Rainy Camp, and I'm working the tuition off by sweeping floors, etc. (So I expect you others to entertain us clean-up folks while we scrub and sweep on Sunday afternoon.)
Jean just emailed the list of workshops, and I'm looking forward to them a lot!

BTW, if anyone needs a ride or wants to carpool from Portland to Carnation, please let me know. I have a Corolla sedan, so I could take 1 to 3 people, depending on number and size of instruments (harmonica and pan pipe players welcome!), etc.

I am willing to ride with someone else and chip in on expenses, too. Either way, I need to stay to clean up on Sunday (about 5 PM, I guess).

I spoke with Jean this evening--sounds like Sept. 11 has impacted registration here like it has in so many ways. There is room, and she's hoping a few more folks will implusively decide to attend. Easy for folks in the Seattle area--though I will tell you that it's fairly easy if you're not nearby. I almost flew to Seattle last week to attend my cousin's funeral on Friday. I had a medical appointment I had to keep and couldn't reschedule at the last minute, so didn't go, but three days before I would have left I found a flight from DFW to SeaTac for $352. It boggles the mind!

Act implusively, plan to go and have a great time. I wish I could go, but I'm getting ready to close on a house (got to pack a heckuva lot of stuff starting in February).

check out the SW airlines fares..got some good ones these days. This is a whole lot cheaper than some of the other camps..people come all the way from California to attend....I do think that it would be a good idea to have day passes for one day attendance. I know it screws up the meal count, so I would just say bring your own food. I know several people who would come for one day and pay a percentage fee and bring their own food. I think it would boost attendance and allow some stellar people to attend in the time they have available. mg

I've just visited the Seattle Folklore Society site and the Rainy Camp pages. Nice to see photos of the place, and it looks like my Dad kind of hunched over on the bleachers in the top photo. I recognize the family knobby knees. ;-) I also recognize several very talented folks in the crowd (I'm sure they're all talented, I just don't know all of them!).

I am so glad Ms. Rain will come to Rainycamp. What a great voice...hope Mudjack makes it too...Sad news for attendees..I probably can't bring my accordian due to transportation realities. Although if I'm lucky maybe I could borrow one. Actually I could bring my fiddle. No bow though. I should see if anyone has a spare old one.

And yes, that does appear to be John Dwyer in the 1992 photo, though I'm not sure what he's looking for...and I also see Dick Holdstock and Janet Stecher (is that David Ingerson next to Janet, looking for whatever John dropped?) and Tim Hall and Meryle Korn and Steve Levy and Eric D'Asaro, and I'd probably recognize more if I'd been there (or had a bigger monitor...)

No problem, though it was unusual to have to scroll to the right to read it! (And as I said, it was a way to refresh the thread, hoping to lure a few more folks to Rainy Camp). My Dad talked about it a lot, and I know put a lot of work into it during his lifetime. So I enjoy seeing people enticed by the discussion of the quality of the camp and the large variety of activities.

I haven't used that html tag. But it sounds useful.

Maggie, putting a note in the Help forum (click on "Help" at the top of the page) will get noticed faster, though with Joe Original still possibly on his honeymoon the clones are probably busier and it might not be fixed quickly.

I did bring Shayna to Singtime Frolics in February 2000, and that was wonderful. She's turning into quite a musician! I'll keep Rainycamp in mind for next year.

As I've said before, I'll be happy to host a Mudcat gathering in Hawaii any time someone wants to come. I don't have my huge house any more, but do have an extra bedroom. The beach park that's about 50 yards from my place would be great for a song circle, as would the large waiting room that's shared by the other three docs in my office building--after hours, of course! (My waiting room is separate from theirs, because mine tends to be full of babies and toddlers.) Just let me know when you're all coming!

how does tomorrow sound? It is so cold and rainy and sleety here now...the coldest I have seen it..today was a holiday so I thought I would go to Seaside and Cannon Beach..Wouldn't get off the bus in Cannon Beach the hail was coming down so hard..didn't clear up either..just kept right on.....

Actually, I am thinking of calling a camp here at the ocean sometime in summer or fall. I always wanted an October camp, called Sunnycamp. We do have a great hall that would be perfect, except in October when it is heavily used in the cranberry harvest activities....so maybe summer. Would anyone come to Long Beach, Washington? Logisitcs are not easy, but it is about a 2 hour drive from Portland.

Big Island, Genie, Hilo (rainy) side. If enough people are really serious about this, let me know and I'll see what I can work out. Here's the monthly temperatures and precipitation for Hilo. The climate on the Kona side (about a 2 hour drive from my place; it's where most of the big resorts are and where they hold the Ironman) is almost always sunny and warm, closer to what you'd find in Waikiki on Oahu. Of course, this side of the island has Kilauea volcano.

Well, Mark,
I, for one, am serious. I've got a lot of frequent flyer miles and I don't want to waste 'em on a PDX to San Diego flight.

Personally, as a melanoma survivor, I'd preferthe rainy season. At least the rain there is warmer than in Portland and Seattle!
Any ideas on how to make this thing happen?

Well, if any of you folks still want to go, it looks like there will be a vacancy at this late date, and one for a tuition-free clean-up crew member.

I'm gonna have to bail out because I've been fighting a bug all week and ended up with a stiff neck, to boot. Unless I decide to drive up on Saturday (probably about 5 hours?), I don't see how I can go.
Wish it weren't so far from Portland, but maybe there's someone closer to Seattle who'd still like to go.

Anyway, rain, snow, or shine, I'm sure you folks will have a great time!

Genie....last August there was the first (hopefully) annual NW Mudcat Gathering hosted over at Mousethief's place in Sumner, WA....The occasion was brought about by Mrrzy and the Wild Bunch coming over from back east....me and the Wild Bunch were a few hours late and missed most of it....as we were gallivanting all over Portland....but what we did get to see was pretty fun...JenEllen, Chanteymatt, Benjamin, Stuart, Thomas The Rhymer, and a few others were there....
