I feel sorry for the poor kid; he's 17, it's not such an unusual occurrence, you know?! Today's climate of hypocritical political correctness really annoys me; obviously we'd rather our kids not smoke pot, but it hardly calls for the boy to do time in rehab! I recall when Clinton was running for prez, and there was all that to-do about whether he'd smoked pot while at college in the 60s---who'd trust anyone who DIDN'T?!

I DON'T feel sorry for him at all. He has an extremely privileged lifestyle and there is no excuse for his (reported) behaviour. The papers printed interviews yesterday with people who had met him in Rock last summer, some of whom described him as the "most obnoxious person" they had ever met. Going by the attitudes and arrogance of most ex-Etonians I met at University (haven't met any since...hmmm) I'm not surprised; these people live in a different world. Also, am I the only person who finds it strange that we have only just heard about all this business; how come we never read about it before? How come the Palace are only now (6 months later) muttering about sacking Bodyguards etc?

"no excuse for his (reported) behavior" - in the reports I read, there was no behavior worth reporting, let alone excusing! So he drank and smoked pot in his teens... that doesn't need excusing at all. Let alone reporting. Now if he's a jackass, that's a separate thing. And again, he's a teenage boy, the question can't even be asked yet, really!

There are some O.K. kids at Eton ,they put money in my case when i used to busk in Windsor, then we'ld have a chat, no not that wead but then they are all kids to me but commodities to their parents who dont want them around so they ship them off somewhere thus abdicating their responsibilities.I've only got three kids running around the house at the moment but I wouldn't dream of sending them away.

What's the big deal. His famous (I'm not sure how many times to add Great to Grandmother) predecessor Empress Victoria is documented as having smoked cannabis. Her son Edward VII regularly did more than just get drunk. He seems to be simply keping up some old family traditions!

Whatever; as far as his experimenting a bit w/substances, that should be a matter between him & his family, just as it would be for any of us & our kids. I agree that he's had an extremely privileged upbringing & lifestyle, and the flipside of that situation is life in a goldfish bowl. I know exactly nothing about the boy's personality, and if he's a little jerk, then he's a little jerk, so be it; but it's an entirely separate issue. I guess I'd say his worst "offence" was in not having the wit to be more discreet!

Yeah, alright, so everybody does it, and I'm certainly not criticising the poor lad - I'm sure he needs time to kick back and relax - but on the other hand, it has to be responded to like this. The media, the govt, the palace - all have to at least appear to take it seriously, because whether right or wrong, what he did was against the law. That's the deal, whether you're royal or not. When I choose to break the law, then I choose also to take the potential consequences. Imagine if he'd been given 'special treatment'; imagine the outcry then.... flora xxx

Under our current constitution Prince Harry the Dullard could become the Governor General of Australia. What on earth have we done to deserve this. You yanks are smitten by the royal family - why don't you take him?

Just curious, but I was under the impression that the attitude towards pot/hash in the UK was very tolerant. People have told me you could practically roll a joint in public with impunity and that marijuana was very widespread and that for possession of small amounts you'd probably get nothing but a warning. What's the scoop?

Actually, Jane, I can confirm that the Queen does indeed go to the toilet. In the 60's I was part of a team doing restoration work in Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, and part of this work involved repairs in the Royal bedchamber.

The Queen and Duke had separate sleeping quarters as I recollect, and I distinctly remember the ensuite toilet arrangements in Her Majesty's room. All the ceramics were white, (no pink or avocado), and the flush in the WC was operated by a foot control, which was pretty avant garde for the sixties. I was rather surprised to note that there was no bidet, however ....

You would not believe just how conservative, and reluctant to change, that Australians are. We went metric in the late 60's early 70's and 90% of the population still don't know their height in centimetres or their weight in kilograms.

The royals pay a high price for living in a fishbowl? I don't *think* so--they are in the top 1% of richest people in the world. I'd say it is their British subjects who pay the price for their miserable, blood-sucking existence! I've no sympathy for any of them.

My teenager doesn't do drugs, and has had to survive much worse straights than those bastards have. The fact that they are supposed to be so "well bred" speaks volumes--well bred for sloth and indolence?

Perhaps we should invite the prince to Stony Stratford - I'm sure that anything he's done up to now would seem trivial alongside that. Perhaps we could get him into Folk Music, after all the English Folk Song and Dance Society might need a new Royal Patron soon if his aunt pegs out.

kendall, I doubt that very much, especially considering the likes of us! And experimenting with any limits is VERY normal teenage behavior. What I heard on NPR is that the STAFF smelled the smoke and told Papa, since he was smoking in the privacy of his own (father's) home, with some invited friends. Again - where's the beef?

There are lots of evil influences that can be visited on growing kids, many if not most of which come from parental example.

I'm delighted to say that my two (21 and 19) don't smoke or take drugs and claim to have never tried, despite the availability, as they are both extremely social animals. They drink socially, don't do religion and will not smack their children if/when they have some. I'm so proud.

Cheers, Terry

p.s. on-topic, well done Charles, for a bit of constructive parenting. And those who have posted saying that drug-taking is "normal" must live in a very narrow little world.

I was a teenager in the 80s and most people I knew had at least tried something illegal once. Trying it doesn't necessarily mean taking it up, though - personally, I don't care for the weed. It stinks and makes my contacts stick to my eyeballs. Yech. I never tried anything harder than that, though.

Terry K, a good start would be to broaden your own narrow perspective and realise that alcohol is a drug and one that is generally reckoned to be far more dangerous than cannabis.

Prince Henry has been drinking every since King Henry IV, Part I:

Scene II London. The palace

KING HENRY IV (Prince Henry;s Dad)::

I know not whether God will have it so,
For some displeasing service I have done,
That, in his secret doom, out of my blood
He'll breed revengement and a scourge for me;
But thou dost in thy passages of life
Make me believe that thou art only mark'd
For the hot vengeance and the rod of heaven
To punish my mistreadings. Tell me else,
Could such inordinate and low desires,
Such poor, such bare, such lewd, such mean attempts,
Such barren pleasures, rude society,
As thou art match'd withal and grafted to,
Accompany the greatness of thy blood
And hold their level with thy princely heart?

PRINCE HENRY :

So please your majesty, I would I could
Quit all offences with as clear excuse
As well as I am doubtless I can purge
Myself of many I am charged withal:
Yet such extenuation let me beg,
As, in reproof of many tales devised,
which oft the ear of greatness needs must hear,
By smiling pick-thanks and base news-mongers,
I may, for some things true, wherein my youth
Hath faulty wander'd and irregular,
Find pardon on my true submission.

--W. Shakespeare

It would be interesting to compare how many car accidents, etc., alcohol has been found a contributing factor in vs. marijuana. Not that it's a great idea to go driving around in EITHER case, but I've always found it peculiar that pot is so much more demonised than booze, when from my own personal observations, people have a MUCH greater likelihood of acting like assholes (maudlin, belligerent, obnoxious, aggressive, nauseous, etc.)when drunk than when stoned...pot-smokers are only a danger to whatever's in the pantry!

Of course, many teenagers experiment with drink and drugs. I wonder how many have the luxury of a "well-stocked" bar in their home "den" and after time at local pubs. Certainly, the majority of pubs I know wouldn't tolerate a bunch of abusive, drug taking underage drinkers for aftertime alchohol; you'd be more likely to find them drinking White Lightning outside Raja Brothers (corner store). Plus, I would never have dreamed of using cannabis in my parents' house (even when I was sixteen). Harry's lack of respect seems either naive or arrogant. Let's wait and see.

Early in this thread, someone said Harry had to "do time" in rehab. What I'd heard on the news was that Prince Charles took Harry to the rehab center to have recovering addicts talk with him, not to admit him. Is this so?

I feel for Harry, and Wills too, only because their mother died horribly and they've had to endure years of worldwide publicity of that traffic accident, as well as having to grow up without a mother while their father dallied with Camilla.

I'm with Sharon. Whether all teenagers do drugs/booze isn't the point, this is a particularly rich and isolated kid whose very loving mother died violently and very suddenly. I can see where that might leave him very mad at life, the universe and everything, and I can see where being wildly rich and pissed off at everything might make him an annoying little prig. Let's hope he gets over it.
