Subject: U.K advert question
From: Morticia

Has anyone else seen the advertisement for smoke alarms in the U.K which has "Down to the River to Pray" as it's backing track? Who does that lovely voice singing it belong to?

I, of course, haven't seen it but I am going to guess Alison Krause..............

There was a thread asking the same question about Aug/Sep/Oct last year, but I can't find it, and I can't remember if anyone came up with the answer. Sorry.

There was that one too - different advert - but this one was about Down to the River to Pray, and included (amongst others) the suggestion that it might be the Johnson Girls.

Thi s is Alison Krauss and you can hear it in the sound track CD to the film "Oh brother, where art thou?". This is a great CD (cheap at HMV in the UK at the moment) and the film is pretty good too.

Sounds a bit like Emmylou Harris to me, besides she was on the 'Comin Down from the Mountain' film and soundtrack and as that's the current 'big thing' it could it.

I don't think it sounds like Alison Krauss, might be Emmylou, however the words of the song on the advert run, "down in the valley" not River as in o brother. Nice version tho'

Morticia,

It is alison Krauss and it is from Oh Brother Where Art Thou? and it is 'Down in the River to Pray'.

How can I be so sure? I emailed the senior PR manager at the company responsible for the advert.

BTW I think it's a great version of the song and that everyone should have a smoke alarm

Brian

that's interesting because I e-mailed Carlton TV and they said.....and I quote "It's by Mollie and Tim O'Brien from TAKE ME BACK. On Suger Hill (Proper) label Ref: SHCD 3766"......mmm, even more puzzled now.

The Alison Krauss result is also given at Song Of The Salesman - Music in advertising site, although with the mysterious quote: 'Song on Ad is Down to the Valley, but essentially' and nothing more.

Guess I'm going to have to hear the AK version and decide for myself.....but I didn't think it sounded like her either.

Isn't a different rendering on the CD and the film?

Just heard it and it is Alison Kraus with lots of reverb and a change of lyric ( i.e. valley rather than river). Thanks everyone.
