Subject: RE: BS: Your favorite contemporary folk artists From: GUEST,ChrisC Date: 19 Jan 02 - 10:45 PM Hi all, This is my first post here; I just couldn't resist commenting on this: I'm really surprised there wasn't more mention of Gillian Welch. I don't mean to slight any of the other artists mentioned here, many of whom I deeply respect. But to my ear, Miss Welch is a cut above, as both a singer and songwriter. I think she has internalized the key elements of traditional folk music, yet put her own contemporary mark on it. Her influences are clearly audible, yet she has found her own way. Her voice and intonation perfectly fit the styles she sings, and her guitar & banjo work (along with that of her accompaniest David Rawlings) are also of note. I believe her music will be looked back on as some of the best from this era. |

Subject: RE: BS: Your favorite contemporary folk artists From: Bobert Date: 19 Jan 02 - 07:57 PM Thanks, Amergin. Her name has been brought up by others in the thread so you're not the only smitten one. I'll find out about this gal, fir sure... From reading all these posts there seems to be a lot of Steve Earle fans in Catsburg. I saw him about 6 years ago when he was still doing "whatever" he was doing. Then I read somewhere that he quit doing "whatever", gained 50 pounds and has been trying to get back into the music scene. I'm not that familiar with his recent stuff so if there's anyone out there that is more up to date on the guy, I'd be curious to hear what's up with him. |
Subject: RE: BS: Your favorite contemporary folk artists From: Amergin Date: 19 Jan 02 - 01:27 PM there is some one else out there...some one to keep an eye on...Her name is Kate MacLeod...she is from the Salt Lake area, I believe...I saw her a few months ago in Tri-Cities, Washington....and was instantly smitten....get a chance look her up... |
Subject: RE: BS: Your favorite contemporary folk artists From: GUEST,alinact Date: 19 Jan 02 - 12:46 PM just to throw in a couple of aussies - Paul Kelly and Kasey Chambers. Wolfgang: Will add Brian McNeal to my watch out for list. GUEST, Ina: We are all ready listening to the same US artists, fir sure. Don Meixner: Bill Staines is a name I'm not familiar with but I'm going to get that changed... Amd yeak, screw Kid Rock.. Townes Van Zandt, yeah, Nanci Griffin, Yaeh. With your tastes try Patti Griffith... Anerigins: Kate Rusby is another of those folks whose name just keep getting thrown into the mix. I'll gett an eye out on her. Thanks. Liza Minelli: Sorry, wish my mon sounded like Lucindra Williams. Life is tought everywhere. Dale: I love Gillian Welsh. Period. Slicker Bill: You and I been listening to and playing, if you are a player, the same stuff. Niel Young, Ani and Steve Earle. Oh, you bad, bad Bill... THANK EVERYONE FOR THEIR INPUT. tHIS IS GOOD DTUFF!!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Your favorite contemporary folk artists From: GUEST,Annie Date: 18 Jan 02 - 09:19 PM Kate Rusby is the best of the younger British crop - I think she'll be around for a while. |
Subject: RE: BS: Your favorite contemporary folk artists From: GUEST,Ina Date: 18 Jan 02 - 06:54 PM Hi Margo (in case you're still around) Nice to hear from you! Of course I know you're from Canada - I'm sorry - my mistake ;-)...anyway, I love your music and I agree with what ClintonHammond said about "The Trinity Sessions"! And about Kate Rusby not being a contemporary artist - depends on how you define "contemporary" - an artist doing his/her own (self-penned non-traditional) material, an artist only interpreting contemporary songs, an artist still living.... Cheers |
Subject: RE: BS: Your favorite contemporary folk artists From: GUEST,SlickerBill Date: 18 Jan 02 - 05:58 PM What? Canucks on the Cat and noone mentions Bruce Cockburn? What is up? Massive body of work. brilliant songs. Someone I've really been enjoying is Katherine Wheatley from Ontario. She's an incredible songwriter. What about Ani difranco? Does Neil Young make this list? i gotta say, "O Lonesome me" feels just timeless. Stephen Fearing , especially his last, live album "So Many Miles". Amazing guitarist to boot. Steve Earle. I just discovered this guy recently. I mean, I was familiar with CHR, which is a great tune, but I picked up a cheap CHR cassete for the car ride home one night, and the songs on that album just knocked me out. It's great when you "discover" someone who's been around forever. You've got all those old albums to check out. SB |

Subject: RE: BS: Your favorite contemporary folk artists From: Clinton Hammond Date: 18 Jan 02 - 03:10 PM And seeing Margo here has slapped me in the face with another obvious error in my list.... Tamarack! In any and all of its forms... Talk about a body of work eh!! LOL!!! Oh and Margo... just in case that is really you... The Trinity Sessions... quite possibly the single best second (they say the 2nd is harder than the 1st eh?) album ever in any and all genres of music... If I had a dime for every time I had to buy that CD again, because I'd loaned it to someone and then NEVER saw it again, I'd be able to afford to have a box of them laying around here somwhere! Certainmly there are a lot more women I could name. I'm also sure that people will be remembered for their body of work that I have mentioned only a specific song for. I don't know what every one has written. But I think its unrealistic and maybe unfair to say that no one will be remembered and their songs won't be sung. I doubt that Michael Jackson songs or Kid Rock tunes will be sung around the same camp fires as Bill Staines or Kate Wolf. Don Stan Rogers- On his Body of work Gordon Bok- On the Body of work Eric Bogle- Waltzing Matilda Dave Mallet- Garden Song, |Ballad of St Anne's Reel Kate Wolf- Give Yourself to Love Bill Staines- Body of work Si Kahn- Aragon Mill Bob Franke- Thanksgiving Eve Nanci Griffith- Its a hard Life Townes Van Zandt- Body of work

Subject: RE: BS: Your favorite contemporary folk artists From: Tattie Bogle Date: 17 Jan 02 - 08:27 PM One other vote for the Bogle clan (Bogles of the world unite!) Eric Bogle (no relation) is still coming up with "Well I heard about so-and-so, and I just wrote this wee song about it". Several of his songs, though, are better known than the man himself: he tells a great story against himself of how "No Man's Land" (aka "The Green Fields of France") was reported in one of our classier newspapers as having been written by a soldier who died in the First World War! Subject: RE: BS: Your favorite contemporary folk artists From: Bobert Date: 17 Jan 02 - 07:34 PM Jim Kruase & Murray McLeod: Thanks for the Bill Staines recommendation. I haven't heard of him but will make it a point to try to dnf some of his stuff. Clinton: I agree with you about Steve Earle's Copperhead Road CD being a little weak but "Guitar Town" and "Exit 0" were both excellent early Earle. "Devil's Right Hand" is as fine a song that's ever been written. I read where Emmy Lou Harris said it was the best song ever written, but I don't know if I'd gone that far. Is anyone listening to Robin Fulks? |
Subject: RE: BS: Your favorite contemporary folk artists From: Stewie Date: 17 Jan 02 - 07:33 PM Bobert, I have some Sonny Landreth, but don't know Drodge or Mullins - I will check them out. Germino is one of my favourites too; he deserves to be better known. It took me years to track down a copy of 'London Moon and Barnyard Remedies'. Has he done anything since 'Rank and File'? Others that enjoy very much include Dave Mallett, Tom Pacheco, Norman Blake, Bob Neuwirth, David Olney, Hugh Moffatt, Ian Tyson and Kevin Welch. --Stewie. |

Subject: RE: BS: Your favorite contemporary folk artists From: Susanne (skw) Date: 17 Jan 02 - 07:24 PM Brian McNeill. If in doubt, just check out the epic songs on his CD 'The Back o' the North Wind'! |
Subject: RE: BS: Your favorite contemporary folk artists From: John Hardly Date: 17 Jan 02 - 07:12 PM On what I think will be the enduring strength of songs like "Summer Of My Dreams" and the "Garden Song" I think Dave Mallett rates a mention. Maybe he doesn't spring to mind here 'cause his renown is from others doing his songs. Murray, I too love Jack Williams. I'm a latecomer to this amazing musician -- only found out about him a few years ago because he shares a label with Small Potatos. I can't think of a man whose music moves me any more than Chris Smither -- the multiple mention here is well deserved. |
Subject: RE: BS: Your favorite contemporary folk artists From: catspaw49 Date: 17 Jan 02 - 06:37 PM Interesting in the context of contemporary.....On that basis....I'd say we'll hear more soon from Sara Guthrie....probably has the best potential out of the Seeger/Guthrie clan....neat kid, good stuff. Others, I would think Garnet Rogers, Chris Smither, Kate Rusby, Robin and Linda Williams (though they have been around awhile too), John McCutcheon too I'd think and hopefully Si Kahn. Karen loves Shawn Mullins so I'll go with her on him. Jay Ungar ought to fit in here somewhere too. I agree on the Prine/Paxton stuff...they're still contemporary I'd say. Most others mentioned here have potential too.....Hey, it's folk-"Time Will Tell" Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Your favorite contemporary folk artists From: Clinton Hammond Date: 17 Jan 02 - 03:26 PM derrymacash what common ground is that then? Ferron?? coolness! Bobert I have to admit, I'm much more of a post CHR Steve Earle fan... once he broke the recording contract shackles and started doing the stuff HE wanted to do, he REALLY started to shine... Granted CHR IS a hell of a fun song to sing! LOL!!! I'm currently working on his song, "The Galway Girl"... cool piece of song! .-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Your favorite contemporary folk artists From: Murray MacLeod Date: 17 Jan 02 - 03:18 PM I quite agree Jim, but I would have thought that Bill Staines belongs with the greats like Prine and Paxton rather than to the modern "contemporary" school of writers. I notice that faswilli2 mentioned Tom Prasada-Rao above in the same breath as Tom Paxton. Having sat through a Prasada-Rao concert, all I can say is "words fail me" . Murray

Subject: RE: BS: Your favorite contemporary folk artists From: Jim Krause Date: 17 Jan 02 - 02:55 PM Murray McLeod, I'm not so certain about that. Bill Staines I think will certainly qualify as one whose music may outlive him. He has had several um--hits such as

Subject: RE: BS: Your favorite contemporary folk artists From: Bobert Date: 17 Jan 02 - 01:10 PM Stewie: Seems we are listening to some of the same folks. Chris Smither, Robin and lInda Willaims and one of my favirites in Mark Germano. Are you familiar with Sonny Landrith and Pete Drodge? Based on your post, if you aren't listening to them I think you will enjoy them. Also Shawn Mullins kindof falls in that group. JohnL: Having gotten into playing acoustic blues over the last couple of years, I have been real impressed with Eric Bibb, Alvin Youngblood Hart and especially Corey Harris. I say Corey three years ago at Wolftrap Farms in Virginia and he did an amazing acoustic set which lasted well over an hour. Then I went to see the guy again and he brought his band and the music suffered. Do you know if he's still playing with the band? |

It's interesting to see what I guess are postings from the US (I'm in the UK) as there are many names I have never heard of although I follow music press etc in the UK. |
