Áine, you may not read this until your back is a little better and you can stand sitting at your computer again, but along with the other Challenger!s and other Mudcatters, I miss your B.L.O.B.s and bon mots and wish you a speedy recovery.
Now, you stop abusing yourself in the name of landscaping, ya hear?

Sweet Aine's lost her baby fat
And broke her buns in pursuit if that!
And now she lies, laid low by pain
While baby fat creeps back again!

But one stout friend won't be put off!
A proper hedonistic toff,
He'll have her heal her which and what,
Or else he'll come and spank her butt!

Fly west, across two major nations,
To offer this administration!
When Micca flies from Albion's land
Upon her butt to place his hand,

And there in Texas comes to be --
That's one event I'd pay to see!!
But male or no, I won't be modest --
My nickel's on the Gaelic Goddess!!

To the tune of "John Henry" – A get well song for Áine

Áine, she's a tearing up her garden
She's a-diggin' and a-haulin' day and night
Till one of her neighbours sneaked a look across the fence
And wondered "Why ha'n't I heard the bangs of dynamite? Lord, lord
Why ha'n't I heard the bangs of dynamite?"

Cos Áine was fairly shifting earth boys
She dug about a continent or two
I shouted to her neighbour "Better get you out the way
Else she might just end up digging you, Lord, lord
Else might just end up digging you"

The Texan human excavator
She's digging like a JCB
Someone better chuck a spanner in her works
Else she'll dig from sea to shining sea Lord, lord
Else she'll dig from sea to shining sea

And then there comes the sound of rupture
It's noisy as a thunderclap
And Áine's on the ground, and she's rolling all around
Saying "Fellas help me … I think something's snapped Lord, lord
Fellas help me … I think something's snapped"

The moral of this story
The moral of this tune
Is – sod off, there isn't any moral
Áine, chara, get well soon Lord lord
Áine, chara, get well soon

Sorry made a complete ricket of the above, it should read

Now our Aines the queen of the limerick
Tho disabled by vertebral trim rick
The cure for her moan,
The philosophers stone?
And a swig from the wizards alembic?

But to Aine we should not be meaner
But help her get well and be keener
And a ticket should proffer
To visit Joe Offer
And be cured by the hands of Christina

Get well soon Oh Celtic Goddess!!!

Poor dear. I have been there too. The physio route helped me. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. If you can get to the puter, here's something to occupy your mind for a minute... just got it...

I wouldn't recommend trying to lick your elbow or you'll put the neck out as well.

I'm sure if a pig lay down and rolled over on its side it could see the sky, if it really wanted to. Someone said that even when you are lying in the gutter you can see the stars.

The worst time I ever put my back out it wasn't strenuous work. I just bent down to stroke a cat, and I was transfixed rigid. The rest of the week I was flat on my back, with that horrible feeling that maybe it would stay that way.

Well, it won't - but when you're back on your feet, Áine, go easy on the things like stroking cats as well as the digging. Easy does it.

Well, Aine, if all this elbow-licking and arse-spanking hasn't done the trick yet, acupuncture might help. And ice packs on the nerve that's firing its insistent little ol' pain messages to your brain.

Having endured a couple of nasty back problems that just seemed to land on me from out of the blue, I know how frustrating this can be. HowEVer, backs do heal if you be nice to them -- just takes a lot of love and consideration for your own body. (BTW -- maybe next year Gargoyle will show us HIS admirable abdominal six-pack in the Mudcat calendar ... )

Take care and come back soon -- ww

The Gal With The Verse Expertise
(Sonja W. Oates)

Our Áine was buildin' a birdbath one day
So folks could see tits out her window at play,
But the ground was so hard it'd make Satan pray
And it tore up her back like her jeans.

She was pushin' those rocks up the hillside,
One-hundred pound boulders and all.
Ol' Sysiphus didn't have nothin' on her
Till she hit the proverbial wall.

Chorus
Now she lies in a chair with the greatest ill-ease--
Our darling young goddess who tilled on her knees.
Her comments so tasteful all Challenger!s pleased;
Now our Cow Chips are all stored away.

Chorus (reprise)
Yes, she lies in her bed with the greatest ill-ease,
While the boys at the Mudcat cafe try to tease,
And her in-box fills up till she cries "Geez, Louise!
I'll be back when I'm ready.  Okay?"*
--------
*Actually, Áine didn't say that.  She's too nice.  But she may have thought it, understandably.

BTW, I didn't 'finish' this parody.  If anyone wants to add to it, feel free.

Get well, oh Gaelic Goddess!

Sonja

Pray Deda, restore respiration,
And so cure your sad desperation!
Our Muse and song-Mother
Is bound to recover
From the pain of excessive gyration!!

And though it was gardening, we're told,
Her hubby is gentle, but bold
And the questioning's led
To which garden bed
And whose blooms by whom were controlled?

Love,

I made her promise to call a massage therapist in the morning and/or her doc for some chemical therapy. Of course she is loath to do the latter, so let's hope she tries the former!

Ah, that woman! She is in a lot of PAIN...enough to give up and make an appt with the doc, for Monday!

She asked me to let you all know that the Vicodan is on the way. Now, it has codeine in it and she gets a whammy of a twisted "second sight" when on this stuff. She gets chased by giant Lollipop People and all kinds of snakes (too many viewings of Indiana Jones?) Anyway, I told her the Mudcat Team would join forces and lick the Lollipop People to death OR take them down to a river, throw them in and watch them dissolve. As for the snakes...anyone here got the Pied Piper'ts tune handy?

Seriously, I am glad she is getting the pain killer, even if it does make her see things and VERY glad she is going to see the doc. I am off to post a new song challenge in a few moments.

Thanks ya'll,

kat

She was in a heap of trouble (pain/immobility/end of her rope with it) earlier this evening, until Dear Hubby got home with the prescription. I know she would welcome and appreciate all good thoughts, prayers, songs, candles lit, whathaveyou to help her through this.

I have been reading your messages to her and the song challenge responses, but it hurt her so much to laugh I felt like a sadist! More of an update tomorrow. Thanks ya'll....

Aine, so sorry to hear your back problem's not as mild or short-lived as I had thought at first. I've been looking for appropriate songs that we could all sing for you, but I haven't found the right one yet. Until I can find or write something more poetic, I'll just say I share the affection that folks around here hold for you and I am visualizing you soaking in a wonderful, healing hot tub with mellow Irish ballads playing in the background and the Leonid meteor shower overhead for you to watch while you recover.

Well, phoaks, I am sorry to say things have not improved much and I've come to ask you to double your efforts to help our Gaelic Goddess. I have never heard her like this and I've never known of someone to be in such prolonged and intense pain, and I used to work in hospital!

Bottom line is, she is unable to move much at all, not even able to be on the phone, really...the doc saw nothing on the xrays, will not give her muscle relaxants and the pain killers he is giving her are not doing anything. There is another appt. this coming Tuesday. Also, a change in insurance near the first, I think, so that may open up some other avenues.

In the meantime, please send her all of the good thoughts, prayers, songs, etc. as you are able....this one is on our shoulders...I don't think she's up to doing much of any of it on her own..too exhausted and depressed.

Thank you, very much,

luvyakat

So very sorry to hear this news, Kat. I will, of course, continue to 'send' her good thoughts and keep her in my prayers.
What do you think about email and PMs? Is her husband reading these to her?
I'd like to send my wishes (and songs for her?) directly, but it she's not up to being at the computer, these may just pile up.
Advice?

Honestly, I don't know, Genie. He's got his hands full with work and the kids, as well as Aine. I know he has a terrible commute each day, so I don't know how much time he has for checking such thngs. when she was able to be on the phone, I was reading her a quick rundown.

For now, I'd say probably email is more likely to get to her via Dear Hubby, as she still cannot sit at the computer. As she is able to get on the phone, if anyone wants to put more messages here or wants to PM them to me, I will read them to her or send them all in one batch by email. Best I can think to do for now. Thanks a bunch,

Oh, dear!! Time for a new Doctor, perhaps? Why will he (I assume it's a he) not prescribe muscle relaxants, or up her pain killers?

Is he insisting it is all in her head, or some such complete [explitive deleted]like that? (Which is why I assumed it's a 'he' we're working with here, I suppose, old boys club/school and all that)

If he does insist it is in her head, I suggest a head transplant: Let him go live in her head, for a while, and she can live in his! :-P!!

I'm betting that it is not a "medical" problem that normal allotropic appraoches could identify, but a chiropractic problem. Painkillers will dampen the pain but they woun't stop the pain siggnals not the pinches that are causing them. IMHO.

Personally darli', I think you need some serious drugs! I mean like a trip to the hospital where they can knock you flat on your ass with some serioud painkillers while administering some muscle relaxants and give the whole thing a chance to take effect. While I'm bossily giving advice here, I understand your x-rays aren't showing much, but I'd look on to a specialist, an orthopede who might run a few more detailed "look-sees." A CAT or an MRI might show up a problem not seen before.

Whatever, it sounds as if you might be approaching or are at the point where it doesn't matter anymore how much you hate Docs or hospitals or your worries on the home front and NEED to get this diagnosed hopefully fixed....or at least have a plan in that direction. I love ya' dear and you need to get something going or I'll have to come down there and drag your ass off somewhere myself! Now I know you can be mean as snake when needed (mix the Irish with the Texas and.......) but I think Hubby and I can handle you and if not, I'll bring a shovel to lay you out with a good whack or maybe two.

You have my best thoughts ...... But if all that ain't workin', I can smack you with that shovel!!

Sorry to hear that you're having back trouble.

Here's a few rules that the doc migh have forgotten to mention.

1. If you are taking pain killers then you shouldn't be up and about. I had one daft quack, gave me pain killers and sent me back to work.
2. Carry a small cushion with you and put it in the small of your back when sitting. Especially in the car.
3. Never bend over and try to touch your toes. That's never ever again.
4. Lay off of the coffee. The last thing you need is something that wakes up those nerves.

Get well soon, luvya.

Bert.

Sinsull, that sounds like a good idea. Maybe Kat or Amos will encapsulate the relevant info on Moon On the Hill, Áine's recent landscaping endeavors, and her struggle to get back to her normal Goddess form. Then, with Áine's sanction, of course, we could make it a Song Challenge!

Okay.....I talked to her the other night and she is describing all the symptons of a ruptured disc, probably at L-4/L-5. Discs do not slip, that's a misnomer. What happens is that the compression of the vertebra force out the cushioning material of the disc, This can be caused by conditions from old injuries to new ones as well as a form of arthritis known as "Degenerative Disc Disease."

A disc is really a cushion that separates each vertebra from the next and allows us to bend and all that sort of thing. The nerves run off of the spinal cord through a half moon opening on both the right and left side of individual vertebra, and with the adjoining one, you have a circular hole for the nerve called (as I recall) a foramen(?). Whatever you call it, it's a hole for the nerve to go through.

When a disc ruptures, either the disc material or the vertebra themselves put pressure on that nerve. Aine is describing a pain that is reasonably common as far as placement goes, that being the lower back, which takes a lot of abuse, and the area (L-4/5) where the sciatic nerve exits. The pain is INTENSE and I mean INTENSE. This isn't like a backache at all in the classic sense. There is a burning sensation at various spots along the leg (generally only one leg, though there is often pain in the other but not as severe) and the mass center of pain seems to be in the hip. The nerve is being irritated and inflamed by the pressure applied since the disc has ruptured. The pain is INTENSE!!!!!!!

The muscles, triggered by the nerves, become very tense and often spasm badly and your upper body will be out of line with your lower in a twisted fashion. Standing is almost impossible and there is NO position to alleviate the pain. Worth noting here is that a severe muscular spasm can in fact cause the nerve to be "pinched" by the vertebra, but in almost all cases, it is the nerve that is irritated causing the problem.

I talked to her a few hours ago too. Aine went back to the doctor today and he feels this may be the case and she is going in for an MRI tonight. An MRI is a wonderful piece of technology that takes pictures through a magnetic field induced around the body and a computer translates this into actual pictures that are very detailed, the image usually being from the top down through the body, so everything is very visible. You slide back and forth through a large tube, quite similar to a CAT scan, on a table that is accurate in placement to something less than 1 mm!!! There is no pain involved.......except in cases like Aine's. The testing requires that you lie very still and in her condition that is almost impossible. They generally don't like to do it, but drugs can be given to aid them in getting the test completed, but Aine is going to have a rough time just doing her part in this. If you have never had this type of back pain, there is no describing what she is going through and the Techs generally aren't as sympathetic as you'd like. Let's hope she gets some good ones tonight.

A Path will read the MRI and get back to her doctor and then a course of treatment can be decided. Surgery is pretty much a last resort as they will probably try Cortizone and some newer drugs to relieve the inflammation of the nerve and allow the muscles to relax. There are several pharmaceutical options possible and combined with a back exercise regimen and good sense when doing things, many people never have any surgery at all, a lifestyle adjustment and good meds will do.

If the disc is ruptured in such a way that surgery is warranted, there are also options available. The classic operation is called a laminectomy and the back is cut open in the appropriate area and the surgeon cuts away the "offending tissue" ....These have been done for years and are generally safe although any operation around the spinal cord, such as this one, is a major surgery. You are hospitalized about 4 days or so. Another option is the newer type of "scope surgery" which is less invasive and often used in cases where the amount of material to be removed is not as great. A small hole accomodates a large bore needle like affair with suction and a "saw" type gizmo and the surgeon removes the material through the tube. These are done in most cases as outpatient surgeries and only rarely does the patient remain overnight.

Forget what you heard for years about the horror tales of back surgery. Like other things, the advancements have minimized both the pain and the risk factors involved. You reach a point if your condition is severe enough that you really don't care anymore what they do, just get rid of the pain!!!

Aine can use all of your thoughts and prayers tonight to try to ease her pain to get her through the MRI. Laying on that table at all is probably beyond her at this point and lying still almost an impossibility so let's all keep some good vibes going for her for the next few hours and see if they can get a look to find the problem and get our Gaelic Goddess back on the road!!!

Oooh, ouch! My mother had a ruptured disk in her back many, many years ago (like about 20 or so), and she had to go in for surgery to get the problem fixed.

I remember the pain she was in, and I was wondering if Áine has the same problem. The good news is that after surgery, my mother made a full recovery. Her back was never as strong as it was before the surgery, but she still did everything she had done before... her favorite activities were swimming and chopping wood.

And surgical techniques are more sophiticated today than they were then... So, Áine, if the [other] "S" word comes up, try to see it as a light at the end of the tunnel, and not a catatrophy...

I just talked with Aine. She and Dear Hubby are looking for a new doctor. She said she is in "maintain" mode, for now, but that there was no reason on earth for them to have put her through what they did last night. She said she's had four children and never known pain as last night's. Her analogy was it felt like having her leg amputated with no anasthesia.

I am going offline, offphone, and off-email for a 3 day health sabbatical, so maybe Amos or Catspaw can post an update, if they hear of anything new between now and Sunday, when I will be back. I urge her to see if she could get into a new doc by Friday so she wouldn't have to go through another weekend.

Please keep sending her your support and love. She is in great need of it, and thanks.

I talked with aine just a few minutes ago and she is inPAIN!!! As I said above, there is no way to describe sciatic nerve pain unless you've been there and even then, words aren't adequate to really convey it.

Last night was completely hideous for her, kinda' like starring in your own horror film. The doctor did not do anything to assure that they could perform the MRI with as little discomfort as possible and the techs were "less than sympathetic." I've often thought that some of the people involved in medicine should have to undergo what they do. I don't know how you could induce enough pain to show someone how almost impossible it is to lay on a narrow table when every position is painful and especially trying to lay flat and straight. I suppose what's worse is that many of the techs (not all) act as though you're making a big deal over nothing. Much to her credit and her will, Aine got through this thing and they say they got good pix. As she said, it's almost worth doing anything to keep from repeating that nightmare.

They will be looking for another doc. It would have been the thing for a doctor to do, to get involved and be sure his patient can get through a test without having to undergo the experience that Aine did. I'm going to give "Dear Hubby" a call later this evening and see where things are going. I'm certainly no doctor, but I can recognize the pain she's describing and something beyond yard work is causing it. Something is applying pressure to the sciatic nerve because that is precisely the pain she describes.

Keep your best thought prayers headed down Texas way.

I talked with "Dear Hubby" this evening and they are looking for an orthopedist. The results of the MRI came back and Aine does indeed have ruptured (also called herniated) disc. He has some leads on good orthopedes and hopefully, before the weekend, they will be able to make an appointment and start discussion on treatment, probably surgery.

Again, as I said above, there are surgical options and they will find out what is the best route to take, No matter how scary surgery may sound, the pain Aine is in is simply not to be believed and I figure she has reached the point I mentioned where it really doesn't matter what they do, just get rid of the pain!!!

Send your best and hold some good thoughts for both of them. Being the spouse in these situations is pretty damn tough too as many of you know. You want to do something and there is just about nothing you can do. My best and Karen's too goes to both of them.

In the middle of the MRI, lying on a foam pad she had already shredded with her nails from pain and surrounded by an awful humming noise she could not stand, the Goddess reached out and instead of passing out, she envisioned a stadium full of loyal Mudcatters chanting "WAY TO GO, GAELIC GODDESS" in a rhythm that exactly matched the hum.

It got her through. They had given her a stress-squeeze ball to grip while she was in this tunnel, and she was squeezing it so hard the nurse had to unclaw her fingers from it one by one.

She is in good fighting spirits; they return to the medics Monday morning, and, I have assured her, the spirit of the 'Cat will be backing her all the way, chanting "WAY TO GO, GAELIC GODDESS!!".

She misses her Song Challengers sompn orful.

She can still laugh, though. Ask her some time about the Gaelic Goddess Patented Over-Shoulder Wedgie Remover we invented. :>)

Regards,

A.

And Gargoyle sets a record for moving from the sublime to the ridiculous in less than three minutes! A new record in bizarro land...
Gargoyle's message was a personal attack and I received a complaint about it, so it went to deleteland.

Garg, before you launch your voodoo stuff remember the Rules of magic, " what you send will return to you 3 fold" So I look forward to your appeal for healing and the storm of apathy it will raise. I publish this purely as a an advice, to anyone dabbling, or threatening to dabble, in things that they do not understand. This applies wqually to wishing evil or pain on someone as to actually trying by any magical means to bring it about.
To Aine, all the very best of wishes for a speedy recovery,I am thinking of you
Maybe you should call your garden the " Rocks of Bawn"?

My curse is on you, Gargie
May your knotted testes fall
For ye laid me up in bandages
With yer feckin' Voodoo doll
I'm lying here in bandages
From the cold daylight til dawn
And I hope you spend your next five years
Under' the Rocks o' Bawn
