Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Donegal Danny From: GUEST Date: 02 Aug 09 - 12:10 AM I don't know about : "Then the storm it broke and broke the boat With the rocks about ten miles from shore;" listened again and changed to and drove the boat To the rocks -Joe- I've got a printed set of lyrics on liner notes from Arranmore's "Island Home", a few differences. The above reads "Well the storm it broke and it drove our boat onto the rocks ten miles from shore". Also credits the song to S. McCarthy (Sean?). All the other songs on this liner seem carefully credited, so I don't think they pulled this out of the air. Their guy George Stevens learned it from Gerry Timlin who apparently came out of Northern Ireland. And the locales were a bit different, uses "St. James Point" instead of St. John's, and "I've fished at the Point and at Killybegs, from Bundoran to the isle of Arranmore". Also some slightly different phrasing, but I guess none of this is germane if you think it's still a Coulter/Martin production. |
Subject: DT Correction: Donegal Danny From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Aug 09 - 10:50 PM Well, maybe it's time to submit a corrected transcription to the Digital Tradition and include attribution for the song. I have the Dubliners recording of the song, and I've added the corrections I hear in italics. Any other corrections? -Joe- DONEGAL DANNY (Phil Coulter and Bill Martin) I remember the night that he came in From the wintery cold and damp, A giant of a man in an oilskin coat And a bundle that told he was a tramp. He stood at the bar and he called a pint, Then turned and gazed at the fire. On a night like this, to be safe and dry Is my one and only desire. CHORUS So here's to those that are dead and gone, The friends that I loved dear; And here's to you, then I'll bid you adieu Sayin' "Donegal Danny's been here, me boys, Donegal Danny's been here." Then in a voice that was hushed and low He said "Listen, I'll tell you a tale How a man of the sea became a man of the road And never more will set sail; I fished out of Howth and Killybegs, Ardglass and Baltimore; But the cruel sea has beaten me And I'll end my days on the shore." One fateful night in the wind and the rain, We set sail from Killybegs town; There were five of us from sweet Donegal, And one from County Down. We were fishermen who worked the sea, And never counted the cost; But I never thought 'ere that night was gone That my fine friends would all be lost. Then the storm it broke and drove the boat To the rocks about ten miles from shore; As we fought the tide, we hoped inside To see our homes once more. Then we struck a rock and holed the bow, And all of us knew that she'd go down. So we jumped right into the icy sea, And prayed to God we wouldn't drown. - - - But the ragin' sea was risin' still As we struck out for the land; And she fought with all her cruelty To claim that gallant band. By Saint John's point in the early dawn, I dragged myself on the shore; And I cursed the sea for what she'd done And vowed to sail her never more. Ever since that night, I've been on the road, Travelin' and trying to forget That awful night I lost all my friends, I see their faces yet; And often at night, when the sea is high, And the rain is tearing at my skin, I hear the cries of drowning men, Floating over on the wind. @Irish @sailor @wreck @death filename[ DONGALDN TK oct Any disagreements or other corrections? -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Donegal Danny From: GUEST,the twangman Date: 24 Feb 08 - 04:14 PM Donegal Danny first appeared on The Dubliners album Plain and Simple in 1973, which was produced by Phil Coulter. It is the same album on which "The Town I Loved So Well" first appeared. Phil Coulter and Bill Martin had a publishing partnership which led to each being co-credited for the others songs, even though they often wrote separately, a bit like lennon and mccartney i suppose. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Donegal Danny From: Celtaddict Date: 07 Apr 03 - 06:23 PM So, Dennis, did you also find "Nancy Spain" and "Streets of New York"? I have both if you are still looking for those. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Donegal Danny From: Noreen Date: 24 Sep 02 - 06:17 PM Not traditional, pretty recent composition credited to Phil Coulter / Bill Martin (though some places just give Coulter's name.) e.g. on The Best of the Dubliners, 1974 (probably produced by Phil Coulter, too). |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Donegal Danny From: Bob Bolton Date: 13 Jun 02 - 02:32 AM G'day again, Don Meixner: Thanks for the reply. The (probable) credits will help track it down ... but may not find published music. My friend is a classically trained violinist and so he wants traditional notation. The chords will be good if he switches to another of the instruments he plays less often ... tenor banjo or mandolin ... but not guitar. I have already given him the words from the DT ... but I will compare for any nice differences in your set! I don't know how well he remembers the tune, which was sung by a mutual friend ... who worked for a short time with blue asbestos in a British naval dockyard - before migrating to Australia ... and who died a year or two back from mesothelioma! Musicman: Thanks for your offer. A recording or (even better for extracting 'dots') a MIDI would be very handy. I would like to see the tune added to Alan (of Oz)'s Mudcat Music Page ... along with all the Australian song tunes I owe him! If I get something that suits, I will pass it on so that all 'Catters have access to it. If you have a reasonably compact digital file of the song, will PM an e-mail address suitable to receive it. Regards, Bob Bolton |

Subject: Donegal Danny From: Bob Bolton Date: 13 Jun 02 - 12:31 AM G'day all, A friend was after the words and tune to Donegal Danny - and I said I would check the DT for him. Well, there was a good set of words posted Oct '97 by TK (Terry K?) ... but no tune. I looked at Alan of Oz's tune site but to no avail. Could some keen 'Catter point me to a set of dots? ... Or a MIDI ... I'd even settle for translating an ABC! (My friend is decidedly even less 'computate' than me, so there is no point in steering him towards resource sites. Thanks in advance, Bob Bolton |

Subject: RE: Donegal Danny- chords From: Liam's Brother Date: 15 Mar 99 - 08:06 AM Hi Alison! Did a gig at a yacht club last Saturday and someone asked me to sing this one. I was amused because I'm leaving for Donegal next Sunday. How did he know that? My friend "Banjo" Burke, a great tenor who also plays the tenor banjo sings this one. I can almost hear him singing it... almost! If I knew the melody better, I'd give you the chords right now! It's in a straight major scale so 3 or 4 chords should be fine. All the best and good luck on Wednesday! |
