It all starts Friday February 8th, and lasts till Sunday 10th. From noon York House, a former boarding school, is ours. And here is a map of where it is in the township of Stony Stratford in the Lost Kingdom of Milton Keynes.
Indoor or outdoor camping is available. About £15 per person will cover the cost. (And there are also B&B possibiities detailed somewhere in one of the threads.)
Friday pm. Meet & greet with some nosh available. Friday evening, Local folk club with Ms Bill Jones, admission £4. Or beer and frivolity in York House.
On Saturday morning, a businesslike meeting convened by Gareth for an hour or so.
Saturday lunch, at Fox & Hounds. After lunch, a trip to The Crown with for a session.
Saturday evening, impromptu ceili and jollity at York House.
Sunday lunchtime , an excursion to The Vaults for a long-standing open session. This goes on till 3pm, after which we should wind down and depart. No indoor or outdoor camping on Sunday night, so stay sober if you are driving.
I hope that's right. If I haven't someone correct any errors, omissions and misunderstandings.
Still not sure if I'll be able to make it. But it sounds pretty good. |

I don't know how much it will be yet as the authorities wish to put together a special deal... I am chasing this issue as I appreciate it's of importance. Because of the size of the building and the facilities on offer, expect it to be on the order of £15 per person. This is a guess. Indoor camping will be at york house. If you have a tent, caravan or camper you can pitch or park on the paddock to the rear of the building. I will be there from around noon, Friday 8th Feb. Clearly York House is significant, but I'm still not clear about its role.
I mean, is it a private dwelling, a community centre, a pub where people are singing, a place where there are floors to lie on, or a meeting point where arrivals will be redirected to somewhere else?
And is there anyone who need to be informed of impending arrival? Any money to change hands? Any time before which not to arrive or after which not to arrive.
No doubt all this is in some previous post that I've been unable to find, or scattered around in a selection of posts. But I don't think I'm the only person who would appreciate a summary. |

A picture is worth a thousand words, so here is a location map with York House circled. I intend to be there from noon-ish. The building is set back from the road (parking at front), but has a large sign indicating its presence, a worthwhile innovation I feel. Useful landmark is the Peugeot dealership next door. York House is a large (3-story) neo-graeco building. Indoor camping will involve camping indoors. This is cleared. What did you want to know? A room has been set aside for the purpose, but apart from that you're on your own... There is adequate room for spillover people and the fastidious, so I see no problem in that regard. |

At least I haven't been able to find it.

You can collect passively i.e. just have a stationary hat, guitar case etc. and when you're on you own that's usually all you can do. If there are several of you alternating "spots" or a group of morris dancers, it is more usual for an unoccupied person to carry the hat round. It can be done completely passively, but I prefer to do it in a good-natured but more aggressive manner. Many years ago at a Bracknell Folk Festival, I watched a Rapper Sword Team dancing superbly in the town centre. The person bottling was obviously anxious to get back to dancing and I had to chase after him to put my contribution in the hat. When I commented on his lack of zeal he said "Well you do better". Although I wasn't in kit, I took the hat and went round with odd quips like "Didn't they make a good job off sewing his head back after last week's accident" - I ended up with at least 4 times the money the previous bottler had taken (and a couple of pints from the dancers). Bottling can be fun - good bottler can entertain an audience as much as the performers - and is often quite instrumental in retaining the audience. An old friend of mine (who taught me a lot about the art) was once bottling for a morris day of dance in a busy High Street. He walked down the street, boarded an approaching, traffic-locked, double-decker bus and kept the passengers in stitches with his remarks. By the time he got off the bus, past the dancers, he had collected money from all the passengers, the driver, conductor, and even an inspector who happened to be on board at the time. I don't think they made him buy a ticket either ! |

I must admit I dislike hearing music being amplified unless it's strictly necessary. Especially in a public place where I haven't asked for it, I find it really intrusive. I know the trend is nowadays for people to inflict their music, good or bad, on people in as wide a radius as possible (e.g. drivers driving about with car windows open, even on a freezing day, to give the whole town the benefit of the thumping bass from their sub-woofers!) but for me, one prime attraction of folk clubs is that I hear people perform without amplification. No matter how good the sound equipment, you'll always lose something on the way. I know that in large venues, you have to amplify, but (and maybe I have super-sensitive ears) I find that when music is amplified, 90 percent of the time it's way, way too loud for comfort, and I just don't want to listen, no matter how good the performer. If they can't respect my eardrums, why should I respect their music?! Julie |

Indoors it's the opposite - I don't use the sound system in many folk clubs which have one. The PA that I'm talking about is much more reinforcement than amplification. I use two Yamaha speakers smaller than most people have in their cars, and at the level I tend to use, it is almost transparent. To busk successfully you need to be heard for a reasonable radius. There's also the problem of balance, I've got plenty of vocal power but there is a limit to how far a guitar will carry and Linda's voice is not quite as powerful as mine. We used a PA at Walton FF last year (The High Street there is narrow) and had no problems with "Pissing anyone off". If people don't like the music, singing more quietly won't make any difference, it'll merely make the whole exercise a waste of time. Looking and sounding slightly more professional will at least convince the passers-by that you're not just trying to sell copies of "The Big Issue". Anyway, let's discuss it at SS - when I'be had a chance to look at the venue. |

I've never see anybody have a problem with busking in Stony, it's a very musical place and street performers are usually to be seen. I'll procure some coffee, tea, milk, bread etc and people can sort themselves out in that regard. Eating houses from chippy to fine modern cuisine are available a-plenty in Stony, most pubs do food as well. Certain hostelries are forewarned to our presence and will welcome us with open arms. |
