Now I know what you do for a living Liz I'm definetley not going! I've seen enough "tax people" just lately.I thought traffic wardens were bad, but at least they only take 20 pound at a time!
On second thoughts Liz, if I buy you a pint could you rduce my tax bill?

I'm not too happy about all these taxation remarks.... I'm one of the poor sods who has to sort your bloody forms out and I can tell you that 3 out of 10 are incorrect or incomplete (usually the accountant's fault), 3 out of 10 are late and of the other 4, 1 will be under investigation and not have a file handy.

And you wouldn't credit how many tax people are folkies or bikers!!

Giok asked: Nobody has mentioned the raffle for a bit?
Please don't mention this to the wife, if she thought I was going to get a bit, she'd want some, too.
And as for the subject of decimalisation, I have been trying for years to have the clock decimalised. Ten hours in a day, ten minutes to the hour, etc.
This would of course make the new Hour = approx two and a half old hours,
allowing for inflation, that is.
This would do away with the confusion arising when one party is using the 24hr clock, and the other A.M. & P.M.
I,m sure Mr Blair would see that we got a fair exchange rate when crossing date lines.

Nobody has mentioned the raffle for a bit, I assume it's still on? I was wondering if perhaps people would prefer the proceeds of the raffle to go towards the cost of the weekend instead. Either way you've all got time to think on that idea, but whatever, can soemebody bring a book or two of raffle tickets?

£15 covers the hire of York House and the liability insurance. The culinary delight (hehehe) on Friday, I'll sort out since this suddenly seems to have become a problem. Beer, you pays for. With money.

Mudguard, We've been converting to metric as long as I can remember. Kids are taught metric measures and have been for at least a generation. It'll take along time, after all we didn't complete our conversion to decimal currency until 1971 and that started with the issue of the florin (or 10p piece) in the early years of Queen Victoria's (Lawd bless 'er) reign.

Interesting thought, accepting Euros! It would save me a walk to the bank to get these non-Euros usually used in Britain...

9 miles by 12 miles - a really big room... Or is Britain really starting to convert to metric?

Two weeks to go...

Thanks Dave, that would be helpful - as although York House has a substantial amount of PA equipment, bits of it are often out on loan.

As stated in an earlier thread, the big room is about 9m by 12m.

Even more important - does the £15 include any BEER ?

I will have a small PA, with 3 mics/stands, but if I bring an extra mixer (8 channels) there should be plenty of room for more mics or DIs (1/4 inch jacks). I don't know how big the hall is, but probably a caller's mic is the main priority.

Do we need amps for ceiliedh? Who else is in the band? Where is it going to be held? Is there a cessation of singing parties for the ceiliedh time, so folks can listen and dance if they want to?

So may questions!

Cheers

Yes, the charge for anyone staying anywhere within the bounds of york house will be the same, whatever it is. Also, everybody will be asked to contribute, if you're staying in a B&B less, obviously, and if you're popping in just for the day then I guess it's voluntary.

There seems to be some concern here, not unreasonably, about costs. Well, we can assume that it will be in the region of £15 to camp indoors at York House; will there be any hands-in-pockets business for those of us who want simply to--how do you Americans put it?--hang out there?

Steve (I never know what's going on anyway)

Hi gang!! Yes I'm afraid I'm still coming, all the way from what is at present a v. dull v. wet, and v. windy Scottish Highlands. The only change is that I've decided to caravan instead of B&B, about the same price as I'm renting a caravan, but leaves me more flexible in the matter of drinking, or getting up in the night to pee, etc. Hope there will be room for another van. BTW no reply from Brid Widder on the offer of a lift, this offer is universal. I shall be coming down the A1 for as much of the way as is practical, and then cutting across to SS. Have a fairly roomy vehicle, i.e. 4 seats + plenty space.
Save the last dance for me....Giok

If indoor camping is going to cost £15 then we are going to have to think VERY seriously about coming. I thought a figure of £4 had been mentioned in previous threads plus money for the meal on Friday.

I think I've got it more or less clear now - there have been a lot of threads about this, and a lot of variegated posts.

It all starts Friday February 8th, and lasts till Sunday 10th. From noon York House, a former boarding school, is ours. And here is a map of where it is in the township of Stony Stratford in the Lost Kingdom of Milton Keynes.

Indoor or outdoor camping is available. About £15 per person will cover the cost. (And there are also B&B possibiities detailed somewhere in one of the threads.)

Friday pm. Meet & greet with some nosh available. Friday evening, Local folk club with Ms Bill Jones, admission £4. Or beer and frivolity in York House.

On Saturday morning, a businesslike meeting convened by Gareth for an hour or so.

Saturday lunch, at Fox & Hounds. After lunch, a trip to The Crown with for a session.

Saturday evening, impromptu ceili and jollity at York House.

Sunday lunchtime , an excursion to The Vaults for a long-standing open session. This goes on till 3pm, after which we should wind down and depart. No indoor or outdoor camping on Sunday night, so stay sober if you are driving.

I hope that's right. If I haven't someone correct any errors, omissions and misunderstandings.

Still not sure if I'll be able to make it. But it sounds pretty good.

Actually, it doesn't, really...

There WILL BE A CHARGE for the hire of the hall. I don't know how much it will be yet as the authorities wish to put together a special deal... I am chasing this issue as I appreciate it's of importance. Because of the size of the building and the facilities on offer, expect it to be on the order of £15 per person. This is a guess.

Indoor camping will be at york house. If you have a tent, caravan or camper you can pitch or park on the paddock to the rear of the building.

I will be there from around noon, Friday 8th Feb. This is the time I've arranged the booking from.

McGrath - I think the correct term (instead of "informed of") should be "warned of" or possibly "threatened with". Seriously though, aren't you taking your van - Linda and I are planning to bring our caravan. Otherwise do you need a lift from Harlow - I'll be driving M11-M25-M1 and a diversion via the Harlow roundabout isn't far out of my way (I don't know if my full Harlow visa is still valid though) - anyway mail me if you do. Thanks Dai, but I'm still a bit at sea. (I get confused crossing the Herts Essex border in either direction - anywhere outside the Harlow Republic.)

Clearly York House is significant, but I'm still not clear about its role.

I mean, is it a private dwelling, a community centre, a pub where people are singing, a place where there are floors to lie on, or a meeting point where arrivals will be redirected to somewhere else?

And is there anyone who need to be informed of impending arrival? Any money to change hands? Any time before which not to arrive or after which not to arrive.

No doubt all this is in some previous post that I've been unable to find, or scattered around in a selection of posts. But I don't think I'm the only person who would appreciate a summary.

As a quick reminder, Saturday will be Fox & Hounds and The Crown, and Sunday will be The Vaults which is part of the Bull Hotel.

I don't know if anyone else would be planning on doing what I was thinking of doing - just making a flying visit and going straight to one of the pubs for one of the sessions and not looking in at York House at all but the addresses of the pubs may be useful just in case.

Looks like matters have been settled for me anyway - brother gets married that weekend - I have to be in Tranmere...

York House is located on London Road, Stony Stratford. A picture is worth a thousand words, so here is a location map with York House circled.

I intend to be there from noon-ish. The building is set back from the road (parking at front), but has a large sign indicating its presence, a worthwhile innovation I feel.

Useful landmark is the Peugeot dealership next door. York House is a large (3-story) neo-graeco building.

Indoor camping will involve camping indoors. This is cleared. What did you want to know? A room has been set aside for the purpose, but apart from that you're on your own... There is adequate room for spillover people and the fastidious, so I see no problem in that regard.

Scanning the thread, I have managed to identify when it's happening, and some of the planned bits. But, other than the fact that the locality is Stony Stratford (andhere is a map of that), and that this is in Harlow's rather hypertrophied offspring Milton Keynes, there's not been much information about where to meet up, and indoor camping arrangements and so forth. At least I haven't been able to find it.

Some kind person spell it all out in a post, please.

Changing the subject, Liz, Sidmouth used to have "Marine Morris" - why not have an underwater Kazzoo playing contest. If we're not having the inflatable moat after all, then it's not that far to the Grand Union Canal. I can't remember any British Waterways regulations against the idea, but all powered kazzoos must have valid Safety Certificates.

"Bottling" is the term used for collecting money from a crowd. You can collect passively i.e. just have a stationary hat, guitar case etc. and when you're on you own that's usually all you can do. If there are several of you alternating "spots" or a group of morris dancers, it is more usual for an unoccupied person to carry the hat round. It can be done completely passively, but I prefer to do it in a good-natured but more aggressive manner. Many years ago at a Bracknell Folk Festival, I watched a Rapper Sword Team dancing superbly in the town centre. The person bottling was obviously anxious to get back to dancing and I had to chase after him to put my contribution in the hat. When I commented on his lack of zeal he said "Well you do better". Although I wasn't in kit, I took the hat and went round with odd quips like "Didn't they make a good job off sewing his head back after last week's accident" - I ended up with at least 4 times the money the previous bottler had taken (and a couple of pints from the dancers). Bottling can be fun - good bottler can entertain an audience as much as the performers - and is often quite instrumental in retaining the audience. An old friend of mine (who taught me a lot about the art) was once bottling for a morris day of dance in a busy High Street. He walked down the street, boarded an approaching, traffic-locked, double-decker bus and kept the passengers in stitches with his remarks. By the time he got off the bus, past the dancers, he had collected money from all the passengers, the driver, conductor, and even an inspector who happened to be on board at the time. I don't think they made him buy a ticket either !

At the risk of veering 'off topic' (..and ranting!) I must admit I dislike hearing music being amplified unless it's strictly necessary. Especially in a public place where I haven't asked for it, I find it really intrusive.

I know the trend is nowadays for people to inflict their music, good or bad, on people in as wide a radius as possible (e.g. drivers driving about with car windows open, even on a freezing day, to give the whole town the benefit of the thumping bass from their sub-woofers!) but for me, one prime attraction of folk clubs is that I hear people perform without amplification. No matter how good the sound equipment, you'll always lose something on the way. I know that in large venues, you have to amplify, but (and maybe I have super-sensitive ears) I find that when music is amplified, 90 percent of the time it's way, way too loud for comfort, and I just don't want to listen, no matter how good the performer. If they can't respect my eardrums, why should I respect their music?!

Julie

Dave, I don't care what you do, I'm not responsible for what you want to do and will not seek to stop you. I intend to have no involvement at all in anything other than the smooth running of the gathering.

What you choose to do with your weekend off is up to you, I'm just giving you the benefit of my knowledge of the town, its character, and the likely reaction of locals, as I live here. Suit yourself.

If I'm singing out of doors I prefer to use some PA - it's too easy to thrash your voice al fresco. Indoors it's the opposite - I don't use the sound system in many folk clubs which have one. The PA that I'm talking about is much more reinforcement than amplification. I use two Yamaha speakers smaller than most people have in their cars, and at the level I tend to use, it is almost transparent. To busk successfully you need to be heard for a reasonable radius. There's also the problem of balance, I've got plenty of vocal power but there is a limit to how far a guitar will carry and Linda's voice is not quite as powerful as mine. We used a PA at Walton FF last year (The High Street there is narrow) and had no problems with "Pissing anyone off". If people don't like the music, singing more quietly won't make any difference, it'll merely make the whole exercise a waste of time. Looking and sounding slightly more professional will at least convince the passers-by that you're not just trying to sell copies of "The Big Issue". Anyway, let's discuss it at SS - when I'be had a chance to look at the venue.

I think you'd be better served by doing it acoustically. You will attract less attention and are therefore less likely to end up in the cells. Also, you will piss fewer people off in the very narrow high street.

Well I'll have a small (30w + 30w) P.A. with at least 3 mics and D.I. with a car battery and inverter to power it. It should be more than adequate for Stony Stratford. If anyone's interested, let's try and see if we can raise some cash. Shopping centres on Saturday mornings are usually quite profitable venues. Obviously Linda and I will be willing to sing, but I also want to be able to bottle the crowd - I reckon that good bottling is at least as important as good performing on these ocasions. Any volunteers ? - see you on Friday night.

Gareth has brought matters such as this up for discussion on the Saturday Morning.

MKC issue buskers' licenses, and take a dim view of unlicensed performances in the City centre. I've never see anybody have a problem with busking in Stony, it's a very musical place and street performers are usually to be seen. So, I'd say do it, the worst that could happen is that you'd get asked to stop.

On a more serious note. Will any of the pubs at Stony let us put a collection round for the Mudcat Fund ? If not could we busk (in Bletchley or Central MK). I will have a small PA + battery and inverter available. If I'm not singing I'm perfectly prepared to do the "bottling" - I once collected over £500 at a Folk-day afternoon, 20 years ago - what's that with inflation ?

Why are folkies (excepting Morris Dancers) always so adverse to raising money by the one thing that they enjoy doing ?

As I often shout when bottling - "The best things in life are free, but we're not conceited".

Sunday Lunchtime, an excursion to The Vaults for the long-standing open session, bring yer kazoo and kilt. This goes on 'til 3pm, and after that I expect to wind down...
