You can hear the Cadets sing it on YouTube:

It's fun.

This is an old, old thread, but the lyrics seem to me pretty clearly inspired by the "toast" about "Shine and the titanic."

SO the short answer is no, it's the same song, and who knows why the date said 1989... OK, thanks!

I believe The New York Dolls did this song as well.

Fred Paris, the lead singer of the Five Satins lives right around here. I know this is thread creep, but hey, Mrzzy has had his question answered.. anytime anyone wants to talk rhythm and blues, drop me a note..

I didn't see it on street corners, but in my college dorm there were some fellows that sang some of the doo-wop songs in four-part harmony. Sounded good.

I understand that "Searchin'" was the model for the song "Elvira," by the Oak Ridge Boys. "Searchin'" is a fine song indeed, and the flip side of the 45, "Young Blood," is one of the sexiest of the 50's rock songs.

Gary T: My Man! How about Alley-oop?

"It wasn't all that long ago,
When we listened to the radio
We all knew the songs by heart
And everybody sang their part
And every corner had a group
We sang Searchin' and Alley-oop
Now when you walk down town at night
Underneath the street lamp lights
Any kids you're like to see
They won't be working on their harmony
Oh, no,
They'll all be listening to a ten pound radio
And even though they know the song
They never even sing along

From Ten Pound Radio

I still love singing Searchin' and Stranded in the Jungle is still best by the Cadets.

Jerry

The version GUEST posted above is the first one I found, and it indicated the Nylons did it. I looked further because I remembered the Cadets' original did not have the cascade of responses, shown above in parentheses, to "'Cause I love you" at the end.

Found online with GOOGLE

Stranded In The Jungle

I crashed in the jungle while trying to keep a date
With my little girl who was back in the States
I was stranded in the jungle, afraid, alone
Trying to figure a way to get a message back home
But how was I to know that the wreckage of my plane
Had been picked up and spotted and my girl in Lover's Lane

Meanwhile, back in the States

Baby, baby, let's make romance
You know your old-time lover hasn't got a chance
He's stranded in the jungle, sad as he can be
So come on pretty baby, just you and me

Meanwhile, back in the jungle

The boys in the jungle had me on the run
When something heavy hit me like an atomic bomb
When I woke up and my head started to clear
I had a strange feeling I was cooking gear
I smelled something cooking and I looked to see
That's when I found out they was cookin' me
Ooga booga, lemme outta here!

Meanwhile, back in the States

Baby, baby, let's make romance
You know your old-time lover hasn't got a chance
He's stranded in the jungle sad as he can be
So come on pretty baby just you and me

Meanwhile, back in the jungle

I jumped out of the pot, I finally got away
I was frantic, worried about what my baby would say
So I jumped in the ocean and started to swim
My chance of surviving was gettin' slim
So I thumbed down a whale that was headed my way
And I reached the States in about half a day
When I got to Lover's Lane I was almost dead
Heard him talkin' to my baby, and this is what he said

Baby, baby, the man's no good
Baby, baby, should have understood
You can trust me just as long as you please
So come back pretty baby where you used to be
Cause I love you (I love you, I love you, you're fine baby)
Cause I love you (So damn fine)
Cause I love you (I got a job; I have money too)
Cause I love you (Did I show you my vehicle)
Cause I love you (I'll take you for a ride)
Cause I love you

Yes, it was the Cadets.

I crashed in the jungle while trying to keep a date,
With my little girl who was back in the States.
I was stranded in the jungle, afraid, alone,
Trying to figure a way to get a message back home.
But how was I to know that the wreckage of my plane
Had been picked up and spotted, and my girl in Lover's Lane?

And meanwhile, back in the States...

Baby, baby, let's make romance.
You know, your old-time lover hasn't got a chance.
He's stranded in the jungle, glad as he can be.
So come on, pretty baby, just you and me.

Meanwhile, back in the jungle...

The boys in the jungle had me on the run,
When something heavy hit me, like an atomic bomb.
When I woke up, and my head started to clear,
I had a strange feeling I was with cooking gear.
I smelled something cooking, and I looked to see.
That's when I found out they was cooking me.

And meanwhile, back in the States...

Baby, baby, let's make romance.
You know, your old-time lover hasn't got a chance.
He's stranded in the jungle, glad as he can be.
So come on, pretty baby, just you and me.

Meanwhile, back in the jungle...

I jumped out the pot, and I finally got away,
Frantic and worried about what my baby would say.
So I jumped in the ocean and started to swim,
But my chance of survival was getting mighty slim.
So, I thumbed down a whale who was in my way,
And I reached the States in about a half a day,
And when I got to Lover's Lane, I was almost dead,
But my soul was gone, and here's what I said:

Baby, baby, the man is no good.
Oh baby, baby, you should have understood.
You can trust me as long as you please,
So, come back pretty baby where you used to be.
'Cause I love you,
'Cause I love you [repeat and fade]

Apparently some upstart whippersnappers named the Nylons also recorded it, which may be the 70's(?) version you were thinking of.

I just remembered--I'm pretty sure the title is "Stranded in the Jungle." And I see I forgot the line breaks above.

Baby, baby, let's make romance
Your old-time lover, doesn't stand a chance
He's stranded in the jungle as he can be
So come on pretty baby -????- me

Oh yeah. It was a late 50's (or maybe very early 60's) chart hit for...the Cadets? I have it on an oldies LP at home.

The "back in the states" part goes something like this:

Baby, baby, let's make romance
Your old-time lover, doesn't stand a chance
He's stuck in the jungle as he can be
So come on pretty baby -????- me

All I really remember is that it's one of those songs that's really 2 songs, with different styles etc. I remember it from the 70s, I thought, but all I can find is something from 1989 that alternates Meanwhile, back in the Jungle with Meanwhile, back in the States. I don't remember the Back in the States part, and none of the lyrics look at all familiar, so I'm wondering if there were an earlier version I'm not finding?
