Subject: Tommy Emmanuel, guitar player
From: Herga Kitty

On Tuesday, I came home to find that my friend Des Behan (currently residing in Mont Clair NJ) had sent me a CD recorded by Tommy Emmanuel. On Wednesday I logged on to the Sidmouth International Festival website and found that Tommy Emmanuel is booked as a guest. Any more info?

His fingerpicking is out of this world. Sidmouth is in for a treat.

Not to knock all the English guitarists, but they have never seen anybody like this. Next year they should maintain the standard by booking Doyle Dykes.

He was a sleeper at the Winfield, KS, festival (this is the one Sorcha referred to) in '00--hardly anyone had heard of him. Before his first set was half done the seating area was packed, and people were standing three deep in the areas to the side. He is amazing.

He was scheduled to appear again in Winfield last fall, but was unable to fly into the country in mid-September. He is scheduled to appear this year. I figure it's worth attending no matter which side of the Atlantic ones lives on.

Tommy Emmanuel is doing a concert at Windsor(Berks)Arts Centre on 30 March. He did a concert there a few weeks back and he is frighteningly virtuosic,- but you do have to like guitar playing! A whole evening can do your brain in.

Yes, he was amazing at Winfield in 'oo, and probably the most incredible this geezer guitar palyer & teacher has ever seen. He defies classification, and is not limited to any music genre. He plays everything, and plays everything on guitar in a way I have never seen anyone do it before. He is now on tour across the USA, and if you have the chance to see him, go!! He is an absolute wild man on the guitar during live performances, and the CD's are quite demure in comparison. I will be there at Winfield come fall, Lord willin' and the Walnut Valley River don't rise! try: www.tommyemmanuel.com

Thanks all of you for your messages. Mudcat really is amazing - on Tuesday morning I'd never heard of Tommy, and now I've got all these chances to see him!

Lionel - I think the CD was really meant for Mick, but we're not currently in contact, though I know how he can be contacted. If you can, please let him know about the 30 March gig at WAC, because it sounds as though this is someone he really ought to see. (PM me if you need any more info.)

He has been a guest on the local Public Radio (WCVE) Station here, and I enjoyed his music very much. And, listening to the his interview, he sounds like a truly nice fellow, as well. Sure, I'd go see him live. Sharon

Forgive me for not making a swag of blickies, but here is a list of previous threads which mentioned Tommy Emmanuel.

Tommy Emmanuel 1

Tommy Emmanuel 2

Tommy Emmanuel 3

Tommy Emmanuel 4

Tommy Emmanuel 5

If you saw the Sydney Olympics opening (I think it was the opening) ceremony then you have seen TE perform. Brilliant.

Another quality export product from the land of Oz, and mighty proud of him, we are, too.

Tommy Emmanuel comes to a wee village called Kirkmichael every year for their Guitar festival, Kirkmichael is in Ayrshire Scotland.

I've seen him in Australia, and I thought he was great

I've just been listening to a couple of clips of Tommy Emmanuel just to see what everyone's raving about. He's a very accomplished technical guitar player, but the music sounds like something you'd hear in a supermarket or a waiting room - its a soul free zone IMHO.

But what do I know, I'm an old time banjo player.

Cheers
Ray

Banjo Ray, as Kaleea mentioned above, his recordings don't really reflect his capabilities. Watching him live, with just his guitar (and a built-in pickup) sounding like he's playing three different instruments simultaneously, I was agape. There's a lot in his concerts that studio recordings don't show.

More info please ...did Pat Kirtley open for him and where in Bardstown did he play?

Here's a link to an archived concert he played in Lexington KY for the Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour, for those who would like to see and hear him...if you've got broadband you'll be able to watch the video - if you've got dial-up, you can still hear him, at least. It's show #349.

He was on the cruise I was on cruise I go on (Cayamo) in 2019, and played with Molly Tuttle. The two of them together was mind-blowing. (Google it, if you wish to.)
