I'm starting to expand my repertoire of Welsh traditional songs, working up a list to do some harmonies with a tenor. I already have a number of them down, and right now am working on memorizing 'David of the White Rock' and 'The Bards's Lament' (air, Phrydian's Lament), and 'The Monk's March'. I'm not really asking for sources on the web (already have alot of those), and have a few songbooks, but I would like to know what all of you would choose as your favorite traditional Welsh songs. What Welsh songs do you like to listen to and sing? Thanks.

I like Sospan Vach, sounds great when belted out by a male voice choir, or by spectators at a rugby match.

Well, I just talked to my classical guitar accompanist, and he is requesting more recordings of Welsh songs that he can listen to. I don't really have any recordings... my sources are songbooks and midi files. So, I'm adding to my request any of your favorite Welsh traditional recordings, especially if they are of men a women's voices together. Seems like there is alot out there for large male choruses, but I'd appreciate any feedback on this that you have. Thanks. alice in montana

A beautiful album is Traditional Songs of Wales (Caneuon Traddodiadol Cymru) by Siwsann George on Saydisc. I can't remember if there are any mens voices.. Enjoy

Hi!

Maybe I'm not quite with you, but you can find couple or more Welsh songs on Frank "the keeper" http://ingeb.org site. He's got there about 4000 folk songs (some of 'em with short music samples). Try it, and you'll like it...:-) I bet I saw at least two Welsh songs there (kinda welsh ?lulliby? and the other one which looks like hymn).

I found a site which sells Welsh music books, recordings etc. There were only a few recordings listed, but probably worth checking out. The site address I have pasted here is specific to a book of Welsh folk songs:

Thanks, Helen, that first address you gave is one that I didn't have, and I thought I had found ALL of them on the web. their tiny lime-green italic type on a black background is pretty hard on the old eyes, though. Thanks again. Anyone else have more favorite songs from Wales? alice

In my surfing around on those Welsh sites, clicking on midi files just to hear what the tunes sound like I have found that I really like 2 tunes now. The first is called The Maid from the Parish of Penderyn, which someone mentioned a short while back on another Mudcat thread, and I had never heard of it before. The other is called Morfa Rhuddlan or The Red Marsh.

I saw someone mention "David of the White Rodk - daffyd y carrig wen" and the bards lament ( I'm not familiar with the last one..." My brother sings with the Washington (DC) Men's Camerata, and they used to do a Welsh concert every year (poor buggers, anglish speakers, had no clue to Cymraeg pronunciation....but I digress. I'm a bard...and I need to find the lyrics to Daffyd y carrig wen....help?

There is a place in the Universe where poets meet - Wales :) The language is poetry - sooo songs are a kidna of variation on normal speech in Welsh Wales where the folk speak Cwmraeg. That does not mean that folk dont sing, the opposite is the case. In a bar (pub) especially at the weekend you'll hear speontaneous 4 part harmonies that make one wonder what the professional music world is trying to do to your ears :) Definite ear candy and in Welsh. A treat reserved heretofore for very special people. BTW Where is Llanfair when we need her???????????????????????????????????

I find this all very interesting, Can anyone sugguest a CD of welsh songs.??? My Mother was Irish My Father, Welsh....All I can remember is Irish songs except for "The Ash Grove" I have heard many insturmentals from the old country but do not know the names..Winters Wages (Lloyd Jones)

Hi, I'm here, Brian's right, harmony in pubs is a rarity. Here in Llanfair Caereinion, Powys, there is a male voice choir, but they are not allowed to sing in pubs because all their song arrangements are copywrited. I've been running a folk/blues evening once a month for 18 months now, and it's only the "incomers" who take part, though I'm told that the locals like to listen. If anyone needs welsh language recordings, I can get some in Welshpool. Woolworth's sell them!! Hwyl, Bron.

Is there a more beautiful song than "Ar hyd y nos"? Also love "take me home", "hiraeth", "cwm rhondda", "tydi a roddaist", "hwiangerdd mair", "aberystwyth", "ti a dy ddoniau" just to name a few. Surely no Welsh night is complete without "men of harlech" and "mae hen wald fy nhadau". I would also include the great pub and rugby standard "Hymns and arias".

Sorry Sue, I don't kow of any sites..

Someone mentioned "Aberystwyth'... wonderful hymn tune... the hymn being "Jesu lover of my soul". When I used to get let lose on the church organ (really old one with full set of pipes) this is one of the tunes I'd open all the stops and belt out.... it's hard to beat a minor Welsh hymn tune....... pity we never had a good enough male section in the choir to do it justice....

I lived for awhile in Ewenny just outside of Brigend Glamorganshire {1971} and I remember three guys doing a vetion of "The Seven Joys Of Mary" that I will have with me to the grave. That was spontainius three part harmony but saddly it was 28 years ago . Brian is that Italian Ice Crean maker still making that incredable creamy stuff I had in Cardigan all thoughs yeras ago. I used to work in Haverfordwest an drive my Boniville Tryumph up just for his Ice Cream! Dont get me wrong the beer was great to but I have an American sweetooth..AH barly wine and white pudding {A few hours appart ofcource!} all the best to you all....

Realy I meant Barley wine and BLACK Pudding {at diferent times of the day} I was amazed anyone invented such a drink { as Monty Python used to say "Good for hand to hand conbat}and I was eating Black pudding a year before anyone told me what it was>>><<<< Good though!
