Subject: Suggest a song samples
From: GUEST,bova_98@yahoo.com

Hi! I am Russian amateur poet. I am currently working on a project to translate to Russian samples of various kinds of English poetry.

Can you suggest me 2-3 folk-stile songs that have most powerful lyric? I would like to choose 1-2 samples of each: romantic song, heroic song, song about nature beauty.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Eugene

Wild Mountain Thyme is really beautiful.

I also really like When You and I Were Young Maggie.

Both of them are listed in the DigiTrad, up at the top of the Forum page. If you have any trouble finding them, just let us know.

If you are interested in some of the history behind the songs, along with some explanations of meanings, too, you might be interested in this thread: Song Origins.

Welcome to the Mudcat Cafe!

All the best,

kat

For a romantic song you might try I ONCE LOVED A LAD.

I believe there is some Scottish dialect in there. Braid is Broad, I sell my love should be I saw my love, For corrach, I came up with steep, precipitous. Ther may be a couple of garbled words.

Thank you all very much.

"Wild Mountain Thyme" I will definetly attempt. "Bows of London" I did not find. Other songs I will have in mind.

Any more suggestions? Any particular sailor or battle song should I try?

Thanks again, Eugene.

"Grey Funnel Line" for a good sailor song. "Scots What Hae Wi' Wallace Bled" is a good battle song but "The Minstrel Boy" would probably be easier.

Battle songs - my vote would go to "the agincourt carol", but the english is very archaic. On the other hand, "General Wolfe" is about a very heroic man, and I think is a lovely lyric...
