Subject: Talitha Mackenzie-Scotland?
From: Charley Noble
Date: 19 Jan 02 - 11:08 AM

As a member of the sea music group Roll & Go I need to contact Talitha Mackenzie in Scotland, formerly Talitha Nelson-Claypool that according to an old Mudcat thread Barry Finn and John Nolan knew in Boston back in the early 1980s. Talitha is composer of that fine sea song "Dramamine" which we have recently recorded and we wish to provide her appropriate credit, and royalties if so desired. Any clue with regard to e-mail address, mailing address, telephone, additional name change would be most appreciated.

Well, right now, she and the rest of her family group, MacKenzies, are at the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow.

I have their CD - Camhanach in my hand, and you can contact her through Arthur Cormack's record company - Macmeanmna, on the Isle of Skye. His e-mail is acormack@dircon.co.uk

????

According to the booklet, they say,

More information on MacKenzie is available from Ken Barker, c/o Mackenzie
44 Gress,
Isle of Lewis
HS2 0NB

Maybe you can go that route as well.

I believe to the tune of Whip Jamboree. Hi John, seeing by the timming of your response you must still be scanning these page often. Nothing more to say of Talitha, eh? Sorry we haven't been in touch lately. Barry

Well, I'll report back soon. Thanks for the leads.

Oh, and here's how (copy and repaste in Word in Times font) we sing the song:

DRAMAMINE
(Words by Talitha Claypoole-Nelson (now Talitha Mackenzie of Scotland) © 1985 As sung by Roll & Go Tune: Whup, Jamboree Key: Em)

Em-------------------------D
Now some don't eat a thing all day,
------Em—D------Em-----------D
Some pack a bag and snack along the way;
Em---------------------------------D
Don't matter much, you can do it either way –
-------------Em---D---------Em---D------Em
You're gonna up and chuck your roast beef sand-wich!

Chorus:

Em------------------------D
Dram-a-mine! , Hup, Dram-a-mine!
Em-----D----Em-------------D
Just one pill be-fore the even-ing sail;
Em-----------D----Em----D
Dram-a-mine! Hup, Dram-a-mine!
---------Em----D---------Em--D------Em
Or you'll up and chuck your roast beef sand-wich!

Now here you see our fearless crew,
There's Brett and Nor and Eli too!
We's all standing by just to clean up after you
When you up and chuck your roast beef sandwich!(CHO)

Now our green bucket's seen its day,
Tossed its share of spunk away;
When you see it coming best look the other way
Or you'll up and chuck your roast beef sandwich!(CHO)

Now if you've got some food to stow,
Just ask our mate, he'll tell you where to go;
Use the lee rail, please, don't spew it down below
When you up and chuck your roast beef sandwich!(CHO)

Isn't Talitha originally from the US, and NOT one of the Mackenzie sisters (Eilidh, Fiona, Gillian) of the isle of Lewis?

She's from the US & she's married to a Mackenzie. Hi Philippa, nice to see you, when you coming back over? Take good care, Barry

no travel plans at present Barry. I left regards to you at the Boston sessions thread which I refreshed a couple of days ago when I saw an article on Karan Casey in the review section of last week's Glasgow Sunday Herald (on line). There was also an article about Mackenzie, the sisters who are not Talitha. Because of the Celtic Connections concerts.

Success! Here is Talitha's response to my inquiry:

Yes, I am the composer of "Dramamine" (or one of the composers--the tune is traditional, based on "Whup Jamboree", and I had some help on the chorus from the bosun, Dave Bell). I've registered the song with BMI (© Talitha Music Publishing, 1980), so all standard royalty rates apply.

Where did you learn the song and what words do you have for it? Glad to hear that you enjoy it. Please give my warm regards to John & Barry when you next see them, and say "Thank you" from me for putting you in contact.

All the best,
Talitha (Claypoole) MacKenzie

Chalk up another successful mission for Mudcat!

One final footnote, the name of the tall ship Talitha was working on at the time was the Young America. And at the end of the song, it is appropriate for a member of the chorus to shout "Vast heavin'!"
